  • Thanks Hannah. I really appreciate it.

Gah! I really can tend to use suddenly too many times. Thanks for pointing that out. I’ll work on it. And yes, I can also tend to go off on profuse poetic imaginings and take up way too much space with ‘revolutionary’ realizations.

All around, thanks for the criticism. I’ll definitely take it all into…[Read more]

  • Wow Hannah Lowe! Long time no see! Great to see you on here again.
Did you finish ‘A Tale of Two Cities’ yet? Did you like it? If you haven’t finished, do you think you’re going to like it?

I… have not read the Redwall series. Who wrote it? What genre is it?

It’s really great to see you again. And no, I don’t think this topic fell into a…[Read more]

  • Okay Mark and anyone else out there who has an opinion. I got desperate enough. Don’t spare me. Here it is.
Quick explanatory note: the MC of this scene just trapped himself in a long hall by tying the doors shut, so the bad guys who are trying to catch him can’t come after him. He’s hoping there’s a back door. But the bad guys apparently have…[Read more]

  • They mentioned most of it already, but one thing I was confused about is the names— which names belong to which characters? Maybe you could help with this by taking one sentence to describe each character’s face, or some odd fact about them, or something that sets them apart in the reader’s mind and makes them peculiar to their name and…[Read more]

  • Not boring … no, its not that. Mainly I don’t have any idea what the story is about. It seems to take place in the future and is about some group of people that live together or something like that and have a ranking system of sorts based on their performance. Other than that I don’t understand it. You really need to slow down. You fly through…[Read more]

  • First of all, this reminds me a LOT of my first writings. You’ve got a great base layer sort of thing going here, but it’s sort of bare-bones. It needs some additions. One thing I’m noticing in your writing is a general avoidance of the word “said”. It took me forever to figure out that that word was not the mark of an uncreative writer. If you…[Read more]

  • Thanks for the pointers on pronunciation, Tatiana. I know what it’s like to have a name like that! I cannot tell you how many people mangle our last name— which in case you were wondering is pronounced ‘FLOR-noy’. The ‘Flour’ rhymes with ‘door’. 🙂

Yes, LoTR is full of fantastic characters. Ever single one is important. In my own opinion, I…[Read more]

  • Well good! And you’re welcome!

You should try fantasy, Daeus. Really.

  • Awesome! Totally going to use some of those. 🙂 Thanks, Kate!

Thanks. Your’e right that I probably won’t use many of these, but I’m sure I can use a few. They’re very unique so they’ll be great for spicing up my dispensable characters and helping them seem like more than dummies dropped into existence just to occupy space. And maybe some day I’ll write fantasy too, but not right now.

  • Male: Adaire: dweller by the oak tree.
    Adin: fiery one.
    Aftyn: meaning unknown.

  • That sounds good. Posting it here, I mean. Daeus, I and anyone else who’s looking could see it that way. 😉

  • Um… it’s not inconvenient, but maybe I should have mentioned… all the names are Germanic and Celtic and Anglo-Saxon names. I would be happy to send it to you if you want, but I didn’t think you used those kinds of names.
If you still want the list, I’ll weed out the names I know for a fact I’m using (dibs and prior claims and all that) and…[Read more]

  • @daniel-leinad-thompson (by the way, I have a hard time believing that is really your middle name 😛 ) I seem to remember you saying somewhere that you were working on a dystopian COMEDY. You remarked in the podcast today that dystopian fiction is usually pretty dark, so I was wondering. Was the idea for a dystopian COMEDY just a ‘because you…[Read more]

    • Yeah, that’s totes a thing. A lot of my project conceptualizations start with the phrase “it can’t be done”, oftentimes coming from my own mouth, before my overarching (and highly optimistic) ideology of NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE kicks in. This idea though, while it had traces of that, was more of a, “Hey, this hasn’t been done yet, let’s go for…[Read more]

      • Wow. That’s great. If anyone can take something totally depressing and make it comic, it will be you. 😛
What kind of comedy are you going for? Slapstick? Snarky, sarcastic humor? Irony? Or wit? The only kind of humor I seem to be able to handle well is a mix of the snarky, sarcastic humor and the wit. For some reason I just can’t do slapstick…[Read more]

        • My current style is very . . . British? It combines a very specific type of narrative tone with completely ridiculous things happening, but very specific character development that births the type of everyday comedy people have in conversations, which keeps the story grounded. At least, that’s what I think I’m doing. I’m no pro, I’m just kinda…[Read more]

          • Riiiiiiiight. Gotcha. >D Hey, I thought the punchline was ‘Get rid of cable’!

I think I know what you mean about a ‘British’ style. Did you mean the kind of dry, matter-of-fact style that takes everything in stride no matter how wacky it is?
And then of course the dialogue. I’ll have to say most of the humor I write is in the dialogue. All my…[Read more]

A name list? Hey, send me that, unless of course its too inconvenient. I’ve got a couple names I’m really pleased with, but when I get a sudden surge of minor characters in my story, I find it hard to think of names for them that really fit.

  • Oh yes. Me too. Outlining fries all my creative juices.

  • @Mark
Definitely see what you’re saying. Descriptions about that sort of stuff should probably get in there, just to get a clearer image of the time period (as I’m *cough* kind of imagining it).
    @Kate
I do think I’ll be keeping Quinn. He was Quinn or Quinlan for a long time when I was just coming up with the concept, so ditching it now would be…[Read more]

For Your Information: my brothers are as follows. William. (Scottish/Gaulish). Douglas. (Scottish). Morgan. (Welsh). Christopher. (Latin/Anglo-Saxon). But yeah, I do love names. • Yes! You guys have made the difference in my writing, taking it from something so-so to something I would proudly acknowledge to be my own. I’m the only writer in my family, and all you wonderful staff have been the encouragement and practical wisdom I lacked when it came to writing. Thank you all so much!

Hey Kate, ever thought about starting a consultancy to help people choose names for their kids. Over the internet of course. Very random, but you were just throwing out information about names like they were your brothers’s, so its not entirely off topic.
