Kate Flournoy started the topic Cliffhangers and Cliched Titles in the forum General Writing Discussions 10 years, 10 months ago
I thought I’d squeeze one last topic in before the NaNo hibernation kicks into gear.
Specifically, cliffhanger endings. For chapters and for books. What makes ’em good? What makes ’em bad? What are some of your favorites in literature or movies?
One that I found VERY well done was the ending of the second movie in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit…[Read more] -

I’ve never done it, but I might try next year. Let me know how it goes.
All I have to say is exercise. Stay active. It will help you concentrate.

Yes! I am. Word limits are the bane of my existence, but it’s good to practice squeezing as much meaning as you can into as few words as possible. It’ll improve us in the end.
At least, that’s a good thing to tell myself.

You got it. That works great.

Well, you know there are those things that will focus in on sounds even miles away so you can literally be sitting on your front porch and hear what your neighbor is saying even though you normally couldn’t hear him even if he was shouting. I imagine such people would use those even if they aren’t very futuristic.

First of all, walkie talkie watches are not that hi tech. The apple watch is basically that plus the iPhone. I would suggest hologram computers. Check out the topic “futuristic weapons” if you haven’t yet. Gecko gloves sound cool, but how would you keep them from falling off? I could see the boot things, but I think a metal detector looking thing…[Read more]

Hahahahahaha! That’s what you call short and sweet right there, Hope. Setting. Conflict. Climax. Resolution.
That’s your basic story.

Thanks @Daeus! Hm… I’m not sure what I could add to that line. Any suggestions?
Glad you like it, Hope! I see what you’re saying, definitely, but about the sword, ‘Sharpness’ was supposed to slant rhyme with ‘Darkness’. Any suggestions to get around this?

Yeah, that sounds much better. The only thing I can really pick at is the second to last line. It’s too short so it flies by you without taking its affect. All you really need is one more syllable.

@daniel-leinad-thompson-2-2-2 hey Daniel you said on the Very Sill—*choke* SERIOUS Writing show that if we had a poem we wanted read we could send it to you on any of the various contact… apparatuses, I think was the word? This is the only one available to me. I have a poem to submit. It’s a limerick. I wrote it a long time ago. Remember…[Read more]

Um… maybe some sort of infrared vision goggles? Something like the Navy Seals have (at least I think it’s the Navy Seals)— the goggles that detect body heat and send back images through walls based solely on the heat they’re picking up. That could be cool.

Thanks, @sarah-h! I’ll post the revised version and see if I got all the kinks out.
The Coming Dawn
Long we have stood
In the shadow and mist;
Deep is the darkness
Around us.
Black is the night,
And hard is the road,
And cruel are the foes
That surround us.
Hard is our fate,
And bitter our lot,
And cold is the night
And the darkness.

Yes! Me too! It’s almost become an unspoken contest to see who can read books like that the most dramatically. 😀
The only problem is, when everybody else starts laughing, you start laughing, and then you can’t keep reading! -

@rolena-hatfield— your first attempt sounds actually much better than mine. It actually sounds like it would work out— like it would actually hold someone’s interest fairly well. Good for you!
@wordfitlyspoken: a family of dandelions and wild daisies, huh? Sounds… um… creative! 😛

Daeus replied to the topic Sword fighting in the forum General Writing Discussions 10 years, 10 months ago
No, but I’m not very surprised about the similarities between dagger fighting and wrestling. Actually, many fighting forms have great similarities and all at least some. Boxing for instance actually developed from people trying to fence without swords when dueling was illegal. Of course pugilism has always been around, but I mean boxing as we know…[Read more]
