I think a good thing to use as a driving force for a messed up protagonist would be peer pressure. Yeah, okay— preach, Kate, but really. You guys think peer pressure only exists today? No— people were still people back then, you know. 😛
Imagine a count or countess succumbing to peer pressure— all their influence would be thrown into…[Read more]

Rameaux: “No Madame, I am afraid it is you who have stepped into the past, or have you come into the future? These men are no sorcerers, but men of great status who by wealth and wit and even occasionally wisdom maintain great authority in the affairs of what goes around them.” I should say the man who reigns at that house boasts some thirty to…[Read more]

Arianwen: *sets mouth grimly* “A sorcerer? I have heard of these men of power. They are wholly and utterly evil. I have no strength against them— they have long disappeared out of my land, and are now only an evil rumor of memory. Have we stepped into the past?”

Rameaux: “It is from my own country, or one near it. That is the house of an a – a lord as you might call it, though you seem to call us all lords so perhaps I have muddled the terminology somewhat. Suffice it to say that that is the house of a man of power.”

No, I realized I just actually answered my own question. I suppose that’s good, since it kept me from over complicating things.

Arianwen scrambles over edge of bank and comes to sudden halt, staring through the last remnants of the thorn thicket into a rocky valley sloping sharply down into the land at her feet. At the far end of the valley is a 1600’s mansion, fenced in with barbed wire and concrete. A road leads through the valley and to the house, then past the house…[Read more]

That’s a good theory. Quite sound, actually. Did you have any thoughts to elaborate on that, @Daeus?

(Well good! Quinn didn’t have to stay knocked out for too long, then. 😛 )
Arianwen stares at creeping mist, turning slowly white, then takes deep breath and cries “Come away, all of you! There is a path here— leading up from the swamp towards the summit of the mountain. Perhaps if we abandon the swamp we will also leave this… mist behind.”…[Read more]

Actually, I think that pretty much wraps up Walter, unless you really want to actually write that story.
I think we should switch gears and focus more on philosophy and less on examples. How about we focus on the use of bad heroes and messed up protagonists to make a point. What points are they especially good for making?
Related to that topic,…[Read more]

Hello friends,
In case you didn’t already know about this, I though I would put this up here for y’all to check out. It is a christian short story contest that looks pretty good. I’m pretty sure it is hosted by Patric Henry College. I’ll probably take a go at it.

Okay. Now when Walter carries out the raid on Alex’s family, let’s say he went there himself, though he didn’t do any of the work, and watched them burn the house and kill everyone in it. We can have him standing there watching, and hearing all the screams and shouts and cries for mercy, and maybe turning white and sick inside, but doing nothing…[Read more]

Arianwen: *sigh of relief* “Thank you, my lord.” *boat bumps against shore, Arianwen scrambles out and stumbles up the bank quickly, clutching thorny, clinging vines and keeping wary eyes out for any movement* “Where are we now, Quinn?”
*no answer*
*Arianwen twists to glance over shoulder at boat. Quinn is crumpled up in his seat, unmoving, and…[Read more] -

Rameaux: *Glad to have something to take his frustration out on grabs snake by tail and swings it violently against the side of the canoe smashing its head* “Well that’s some gratification. What I’d really like to do though is burry my knife in one of those hairy monsters. That makes two reasons to get to shore.”
