@emily-d You don’t have to read a mountain of books. The more you can read the better, but 5-10 could get you by. Reading sci-fi to learn about it is different than writing yourself into it. You’ll never know the full potentials of your genre or be able to avoid the way overused cliches unless you read the genre.

@Ethryndal child… seriously. Have some confidence in your own abilities. 😛 You explained that very well and I totally agree. Great points. I think you taught me something there. 😉 Or at least put something I’d only felt into words.

@graciegirl Yep. 🙂 Another thing that came to me is that I think the key event is his commitment to vengeance.

@Northerner @That_Writer_Girl_99 yes… I get excited and then it’s full speed ahead, which is rather inconsiderate of me. 😛 Glad it’s been useful though. 😉

@Daeus @That_Writer_Girl_99 yeah, the only reason I didn’t say Count of Monte Cristo is because I knew Daeus would. XD

Daeus replied to the topic Spring Writing/Reading Goals in the forum General Writing Discussions 9 years, 3 months ago
@that_writer_girl_99 I second A Tale of Two Cities and Les Mis. Also (more than any other classic ever) The Count of Monte Cristo. After that: Ben Hur, The Scarlet Letter, Crime and Punishment, The Ball and the Cross. (Let me know if you want more.)

@graciegirl lol! You probably picked one of the hardest books in the world to analyze for story structure. First of all, it doesn’t follow a standard arc, and second, there are so many major events it’s hard not to get confused as to which ones are the major ones.
It’s been a couple years since I’ve read this, so I can’t comment much, but I think…[Read more]

@That_Writer_Girl_99 aha, that dear old ugly monster of perfectionism. I’m still struggling with that too, but I am learning that it’s okay to fail. It’s when I let that failure keep me down and cloud my heart towards God that things become a problem.

@That_Writer_Girl_99 cheer up. Nothing is ever pointless. Our mistakes teach us by elimination. 😉 You know what doesn’t work now; that’s one more step towards what does.

@That_Writer_Girl_99 ah— the joys of introversion. 😛 I know what that’s like. Most of the time I prefer being by myself or with my family. Hanging out with friends (unless they’re kindred spirits) can be mentally exhausting.
