I like this a lot! It has a very fairytale-ish feel (sorry for stealing your words, @ethryndal), which is what I’m sure you were going for. So nice job!
1. Try not to use parentheses as much as you do. Example:

I’m calling it quits, too, @ethryndal . I’m feeling satisfied too. I added four more stanzas to a half-finished poem that had six. It needs a lot more work, but it’s getting there … slowly …

I just submitted my story to the Home Life contest and am currently waiting for a reply from the Bunyan contest people due to *ahem* technical difficulties (i.e. I put my email address in wrong D: )
