      Ooo! Mystery!!

      Rory

Rory laughed in a choked sort of  way. “Everything. I don’t have good memories, Leo.” He paused. “Well… I guess I wouldn’t want to forget the church… or you… or holding Quincy…” his voice trailed away. He lifted his shoulders several times. Images flickered through his mind. The child under the bed… tiny hands shielding large eyes… the agents storming in. Yelling, brutal blows for mistakes he’d made. Boys his same age forced to their knees. Gunshots. A shriek of a plane engine, the sickening feeling of falling, the screams of the other young soldiers trapped, begging him to save them. Rory shuddered. “I… there…” he sucked in a breath. “There was a crash,” he whispered hoarsely. He leaned against the wall, his eyes closed. “I was in flight school… I was supposed to be a pilot.” He shuddered and caught his breath.
the elevator came to a stop and Rory jerked upright, cold sweat streaking his back. He had to talk about it… but he didn’t want to remember.

Leo’s voice reached out, grounding Rory in the present. He followed the older boy out into the hall. His legs felt shaky, and he whipped his sweaty palms against his pants. He tried to shake away the memory but it still clung to him, moving the images in his mind with reality. Rory forced himself to focus. Leo was real, this hall was real, the pain in his leg was real, the sound of their steps was real. The reached the elevator and Rory stepped inside with Leo. He grabbed the bar as the machine jolted downward. For a moment he felt sick. An engine screeched in his mind as they fell. Rory stumbled slightly and steadied himself. He licked his dry lips uneasily and looked up at Leo. “We… we had technology that could change a person. Wipe their mind like… like deleting files.”  he hesitated and then looked down. When he spoke, his voice was soft. “Do you ever wish they would wipe your memory?”

          Leo is amazing.

Hey, Rory. It’s alright. You gave me a bit of a scare there. Thought you’d just got burned. But…”

This just feels so natural! I can literally hear his voice in my head!

          Rory

Rory could feel a tremor fighting to shake him, but he forced it to keep still. Leo’s calm voice reached out, pulling him back to the world he now knew. He looked up. “I’m sorry,” he repeated, this time apologizing for the flashbacks that kept throwing him into panic, dragging him into that old life. How was Leo putting up with it? “I… i won’t let it happen again,” he managed.

                NO!!!!

                Rory

When the fire flared and the torch began it’s whispering hiss, Rory felt himself jerk back. A scream echoed in his mind. They were spinning, falling, going down. He couldn’t get free. Do something! Don’t let us die! Please! The scream of his friend clawed through his mind.

The bar slipped from Rory’s hands and screeched against the wall as he stumbled back. All at once the world snapped back into focus, and Rory realized his mistake. Threads of his old life pulled at him and he cowered away. “I’m sorry,” he whispered. “Please… please don’t–” he choked on the last words and closed his eyes tightly, trying to force the sneering faces of cruel agents and officers from his mind. Make one wrong move, and you’re done for. Anything I don’t approve, and it’s over.

                  Rory

Rory nodded and picked up his pace a little. He forced his knee to bend as he walked, keeping himself steady though tears burned his eyes, causing them to blur. He took in a slow breath. He would be fine. He had hidden injuries before. He’d had to. When weapons broke…….

Rory shook the nightmarish thoughts away.

I loved Leo talking down to them too!

I reread the whole fight. It’s so funny. 😂

Rory walked slowly beside Leo. He was relieved that he was allowed to question, but he was also scared to do so. Things were so muddled. Rory wanted somewhere to go that made sense. That was safe.

He wanted to go back to the church.

For a moment he almost asked Leo, but he held back. Instead, he asked, “Where now?”

Ahhh!! Leo’s first encounter with Agents!!! 😝

                        Agents

Instead of being met by a wild rush, all the young Agent saw was a janitor. The fellow turned, and 225 saw that he could only be a year or two older then himself. The janitor looked surprised, but 225 was suspicious. Something wasn’t right.
The young Agent stepped into the closet, letting go of the knife as he did. His whole baring reeked of self confidence. Not only was the young man in front of him not a lowly soldier, this was an inferior. 225 smiled, but it was a smile that never reached his eyes. “I’m looking for someone, and I think you know something.”

when the janitor didn’t respond at once, 225 grabbed his shirt and shoved the young man against the wall. “I’m looking for a boy, and I need answers. Now.”

                        Leo

Leo didn’t like these kids. He stared back with bored annoyance, laying one gloved hand over the fist that gripped his shirt. His palm turned icy cold.

“If you like this shirt, go buy yourself one, kid. What do you want me to do? Quote Pi to the 40th digit? Explain nuclear fusion? Or something you’d actually understand?” His other gloved hand found the Agent’s wrist with another icy grip. “Students aren’t allowed in here.”

                        The Agents

“How dare you speak to me in such a fashion. You have no idea of your place, boy. You will answer me at once or we will have to persuade you. Now, tell me what you know. You do know something, I can see it. I haven’t been trained in integration seven years for nothing. If you make me use force, I’ll  see to it that you never have the chance to tell a soul.”

Behind him, 229 switched open his knife.

225 narrowed his eyes to slits and smiled. “What’s it gonna be, boy?”

                        Leo

“Look kid, I don’t have time for this today. Go do your own homework.” As he spoke Leo lifted the Agent’s now nerveless hands from his shirt and wrenched his arms behind his back. Shocked and off balance, the kid went down with surprising ease. He stared uncomprehending as Leo stepped over him. The temporary paralysis wouldn’t last long.

Leo dodged a stab from the Agent’s knife and caught it in a gloved hand, twisting away to grab the nearest spray bottle.

Cleaning vinegar. Nice. A full spray caught the Agent square in the face.

The next few moments were a blur of flying fists and confusion. In the midst of creating the chaos, Leo managed to dive past the agent and snag the precious trash can on his way through the door.

“Rinse well in warm water!” He called behind him as the door slammed shut.

                          @koshka

Oh my word! I just realized that Leo and Rory started their relationship working on a team! (fixing lightbulbs) and now they’ve made full circle!

Their relationship could be a book!

                          This is awesome!

Aaaannnndddd Rory has come a long way. He did not trust Leo to begin with.

                          Rory

Leo looked at Rory a moment, and Rory fought the urge to run. Stay calm, you’ve been trained to kill your whole life, you can take him out if he does anything. Then, another part of Rory spoke, the part he had hidden in order to stay alive. But… I don’t want to hurt him.

Leo’s voice jerked Rory out of his thoughts. “Sure. Why don’t you come help me change a lightbulb? It’s in room 204K, just up the hall. It’s empty today.”

He pointed to the classroom door with 204K written in gold over the lintel.

                          Rory swallowed hard and nodded.

                          Rory: *contemplating death and destruction*

                          Leo: *caring but oblivious*

                          Leo

The kid seemed a little tense. Maybe he was just uncomfortable.

Which made sense if he was wanting to discuss whatever had put that look in his eyes.

Leo let the classroom door almost close behind him as he flicked on the light switch.

Five out of six florescent lights blinked on. The other didn’t even flicker. He set a chair under it and smiled at Rory.

                          “Mind holding this steady?”

I was skimming back through the RP and found one of Rory’s first encounters.

                            Made me laugh so hard.

                            Rory

Rory jumped and spun, aiming a blow at Hunter with his fist. He pulled up just in time and froze. “Hey Hunter.” He quickly opened his fist and made a waving motion with his hand. “Hi Hunter. Hello Hunter. Hey Hunter… Hi.” Rory shoved his hands in his pockets. He could feel his ears burning and he really, really wanted to hit something.

                            Or disappear.

*gasp* He did not! OH MY WORD! HE CALLED HIM LITTLE BROTHER!!!!!!! 😍😍🥹

                              *Calms down*

I literally gasped when I read that. 😂

                              Rory

Rory started and looked up at Leo, his mind racing. Little brother…. the first born were the elite, making the younger siblings inferiors. Being called little brother was the highest of insults. But… little brothers weren’t owned by the government in the same way older ones were. They were more like people. They had names and they had meaning. Not just tools in the hands of other men. Rory cast aside all societal norms and smiled. Little brother. The term had warmth to it. He liked it.

After a moment his thoughts replayed the question. “What’s on your mind?” Oh! Rory hesitated a second and glanced at the rail that ran around the elevator. His hand was gripping it until the knuckles were white. He didn’t like elevators.

They were too much like planes.

He looked back at Leo. “I… I’m not sure really. I’m still trying to figure it out, it’s just–” he broke off with a sigh and toed the ground with his boot. “I guess I’m confused, and it’s weird. I’ve never been allowed to be confused before. I just had to obey and not ask. Now… well… it almost feels like I’m allowed to be confused. Which is kind of nice actually.” He looked down and pushed harder against the ground, letting his boot squeak. “I… I’m sorry. I should just accept it, shouldn’t I?”
