Your tag not working.
@ellette-giselle
I promise both of you that I do not agree with the “kids always know better” thing either. I have been annoyed a bit that my book is this way, with characters who either disagree with their parents (like Martha and Tyn), or are separated from their parents (like Alan and Oliver). One day, I’ll try…[Read more] -

I don’t think Min means you should actively hide your writing from your family, just that you can refrain from doing so if you feel like they would give superficial feedback. (Feedback that is preference-driven. For example, “I think the story should be funnier/have more fight scenes/have a dragon in it.”)
Everyone has…[Read more]

(I know all guys and girls were different, I was just kinda generalizing. Basically, I hear a lot of guff from my brothers and dad when there a girly-guy scenes in books and movies, and I didn’t want to commit the teenage-girl guy character crime. haha)
I get that. I actually don’t share my writing with my family, because I know i…[Read more]

The second to last thing you wrote, just one tiny thing, maybe not quite so much crying. When I’m sad, I just stare off into the distance. Other than that, he’s definitely masculine, especially in the parts preceding the roof parts.
And I was about to say, like a stereotypical guy trying to fix all the problems, “Why doesn’t he…[Read more]

@ellette-giselle well I enjoyed the boxcar series for a while when I was younger, I think the thing was that I never really took them as particularly realistic anyway lol
The original series was written at a time when the market wasn’t oversaturated with “kids always know better” content, so it wasn’t as bad then, but yeah I can see problems in…[Read more]

@linus-smallprint the chapter, what glitch?
@ellette-giselle yeah I get you on not liking the “Children disobey parents, keep secrets, do things the parents say no to, and in the end it all worked out because they were right and the parents were wrong, and there’s NO consequences for all of it” thing. Like, it’s not like parents aren’t wrong s…[Read more]

@ellette-giselle yeah it’s been a while since I watched the show, but I remember that scene/episode quite clearly. It was really well done.

@ellette-giselle ooh wow! Super sad, but still a great job showing the harsh reality of death in war, especially on the losing side.

Yes! And, (spoiler kinda) he’s unintentionally beginning to see himself as Ardenta’s savior which is why he feels like a failure. I don’t know if that was clear in the above.
Interesting. How easy it is to get caught up in pride.

This is a realistic reaction from Aaron. He sees himself as a failure and has suddenly had more responsibility shoved on to him than he thought he would get. He does not feel ready and hides, lest he bring down others with him. My character, Alan, will eventually go through something like this, asking the same question (“Why…[Read more]

wow! That was interesting!
The chapter, or the glitch?
In the beginning, God created Grammar and it was good.
Then there were grammar issues, and they was bad.
I’m trying (except when writing what Oliver Says). Although, since this is an earlier draft, I’m also focusing on other things, such as character…[Read more]

As a professional human male, I would be happy to offer some of my thoughts. What I think should be realized is that when it comes to gender, not every man is the same, and not every woman is the same. Men and women will have general differences, but a man can still be masculine while still showing off what might be considered…[Read more]

I agree with most of what @calyhuge has already said in regards to Aaron.
My main advise is to just follow his current character design and/or think about how dudes in your own life would approach the situation.
I feel like from my experience and what you’ve provided than if Aaron chooses to go down the greif hole might e…[Read more]

Ok I read the scene. And the first thing I think is “I’ve never been in a war – I can’t imagine what that’s like.”
I will tell you it feels like it’s a real guy, and it feels like real war, and I think what you had him do so far is what a guy would do. Now we come to what comes next, and to me, the first question is, How strong…[Read more]
