Kate Flournoy replied to the topic Self-Doubt… in the forum General Writing Discussions 6 years, 9 months ago
@Dekreel basically what has already been said. I struggle with this too. Especially recently. I found an author whose skill in my chosen genre is so crazily far beyond my own I don’t dare dream I’ll ever reach it.
And much as I hate to admit this, that thought drives me absolutely bonkers.
It’s not that I’m jealous of him, just that I loathe…[Read more]

@daeus Ahhh, Oops, my bad X’D
Well, it’s still a good idea XD
@supermonkey42 I’m impressed by you going through all of the archives! Do you read every single post?

Hello! I’m back to this wonderful pointy topic!
I finally got swords in my novel! Well….they’re practice blunts, but I got to write the word “sword” so I’m pretty happy.
But I don’t know how to teach someone to use it. Has anyone ever written a scene where your MC is taught to use a sword? Because I am rather clueless.

@daeus this sounds fun! I would like to do this…but I’d probably just end up fainting and being incoherent about the awesomeness instead of actually analyzing. I do that sometimes. 😉

. . .Two years later. . .
This was a great idea! Whatever happened to it?
(Yes, I am systematically browsing every page of the 84 pages of KP forum topics. It’s kind of fun, actually.)

@Daeus Yay! *lemonade and cheesecake for all*
I definitely prefer “Awestruck to see that in dark the lights dance”.

@daeus First off, that poem is amazing. So very beautiful. 😀
Uhhh…. I think I’ll just leave my suggestions here. The bold text is what I would change. Continue at your own risk. 😛

@daeus Thankee. *bows* Well, I tried incorporating small ‘good’ things and it’s been a lot let dismal lately. I think I just let Ike gnaw on dismal’ness’ for too long. XD
@sarah-anson I really like the italicized bit you said there. *nods* I agree. Thanks!

‘Most comely he smiled’ is better
And little Teedletiden he fashioned for the trees
For all of these a city, Letharill, he made
Its glory was established that it should never fade[ I’m unsure about the meter in these last three lines, especially lines 1 and 3.]Maybe instead: ‘And little Teedletiden he fashioned for trees
For all t…[Read more]

@daeus Sorry I didn’t get back to you sooner. I am usually only around here in the morning and evening…so anyway…
This version is much smoother. In answer to your comments:
Stanza two; “Most comely he smiled” is better, because otherwise we try to drag “and” out into two beats. The reason for this is probably that almost all – if not al…[Read more]

Well done sir. The style and feel is very reminiscent of Tolkien (in a good way). #Silmarillion

introvert_girl replied to the topic Unlikable Protagonist? in the forum Characters 6 years, 9 months ago
@skredder That’s been one of my fears, that people wouldn’t stick around long enough to see her growth. But I’m glad to hear that seeing the character change helps to make them likable.
@sam-kowal That’s so interesting! I’ve heard about Likability, Proactivity and Competence before, but not Disability. I find that more compelling, actually. It…[Read more]

@daeus I hope you don’t mind. You didn’t tag me, nor did I ask first, but I love good meter in poetry so I messed around with your poem a bit. I put everything I changed in bold and bracketed the words I would remove. I didn’t get the meter perfect, as in there are somethings which were awkward but didn’t feel right changing as it could change…[Read more]

@Daeus Thanks.

Emma Flournoy replied to the topic Song for my book in the forum Poetry Critiques 6 years, 9 months ago
@Daeus Oh hey, could I have it in a doc too? I was going to do it without one, but that sounds a much more efficient option.
I don’t write poetry, but I certainly appreciate good poetry, especially with good cadence. That’s my favorite part.
I read through it, and it’s beautiful, and I do have some metrical suggestions.
Also, I feel compelled…[Read more]

@daeus I really like it! I’ve never written any poem nearly this long. 🙂 I’m putting it in a separate google document myself where I will comment on it, because when I opened yours I got mixed all up in Elizabeth’s comments so that it was hard to go over just for myself. 😀
Since it’s a really long poem it might take me a while to get t…[Read more]

Ben Powell replied to the topic Best Cover Designs in the forum General Writing Discussions 6 years, 9 months ago
@mnvalentine I really don’t like covers that have the main character on them, because they never look the way I imagine them to. 🙂 I prefer simplistic covers that hint at a part of the story.
In my opinion, that’s a great cover. Also, @daeus ‘s Golden Ziggurat is especially good.
Something like The Way of Kings (see @sam-kowal ‘s post) w…[Read more]

So I’m not looking for cover design tips, I’ve already read the whole internet on that topic 🙂 But I want to hear what covers you all think are well designed – fiction, nonfiction, I really don’t care, I just want to know what you think looks good!!
