@emily-d Basically, science fiction is what it says: fictionalized science. Sometimes you don’t have to read a lot of that genre to write that genre (although it is a good idea). So, why do you think that the character and relationship was good? I can’t see any arc really, for either of the characters. I can’t see them as great characters, really. And what was the theme?
