@sleepwalkingmk My understanding is that English is more focused on grammar and syntax and some of the more technical aspects of the English language, whereas literature is more focused on reading the great books and discussing/analyzing them. There’s a fair bit of overlap, though, between the two majors, but that’s the directions they tend to…[Read more]

@sarah-h Good point. They do have rather high entrance requirements. That being said, I do know friends here who didn’t 100% make the entrance requirements but were still allowed in. Because it’s a small school, if you try hard enough to get in, you have a pretty good chance of making it in, even if you don’t necessarily meet all of them. So if…[Read more]

@dragon-snapper My recommendation would be to figure out what kind of majors you’re looking at and research what the best colleges are for that major. If part of your purpose of attending college is to help your creative writing, I would think through whether or not you want to go to a place with a strong literature program or a strong writing…[Read more]

@ingridrd Noooooo… :'( We will miss your presence. Hopefully you’ll be able to catch the replay!
@winter-rose If that happens, we will most certainly have no trouble coming up with story ideas for NaNoWriMo. 😉 Looking forward to having you there!

@sarah-h: I’ve been doing some site changes over the past couple weeks, but don’t think I did anything that would have impacted the emoji size. :/ They seem to be showing up normally for me as well. I second what @dragon-snapper said about this possibly being a zoom issue!

@ingridrd: Sweet! Hope you can make it!
@anne-swiftblade: We’ll miss having you there! As I said above, we should be able to make a recording of the session, so watch your email or this thread to learn more about how you can access that replay. 🙂

Awesomesauce. Looking forward to hopefully having both of you there!
@kate-flournoy @sarah-h @dragon-snapper @hope
We’re currently looking into different ways to record the session and share it with those of you who can’t come. Watch your emails and/or this thread for information on that once we figure it out!

I’ve added a feature to the sidebar that should be pretty close to, if not identical to, what we had before. 🙂 Thanks for your feedback!

@mark-kamibaya: Haven’t read McKee yet, but he’s rather high on my reading list. Hopefully I’ll be able to get to his book soon. Since I’m not as familiar with competing structures, because of how broad the three act structure is, my view tends to be that most stories work well with following that basic structure, albeit with certain tweaks…[Read more]

I’m only really familiar with the Three Act Structure and the Writer’s Journey. Haven’t even heard of the other ones. I prefer the Three Act Structure as it’s the most flexible and makes the most sense. I personally use K.M. Weiland’s variant of the Three Act Structure when writing. IMO, the Writer’s Journey template isn’t incredibly helpful and…[Read more]

Josiah DeGraaf replied to the topic Alternative Historical Fiction Book Premise in the forum Novel Idea Critiques 9 years, 6 months ago
@clairec: Tbh, that premise probably isn’t enticing enough to make me really want to read a story. I’m a bit confused about what the main plot is and how her service as a nurse connects to destroying the contents of a secret safe. Is this a spy thriller, action adventure, gritty war story, [insert-other-genres-here]? A good premise should be…[Read more]

Josiah DeGraaf replied to the topic Favorites? in the forum Book Discussions 9 years, 6 months ago
@kate-flournoy: Count of Monte Cristo is one of my two favorite books (right up there with Brothers Karamazov), so it would be hard to top it, but I do have high expectations for Les Mis, so we’ll have to see. 😉

Josiah DeGraaf replied to the topic Favorites? in the forum Book Discussions 9 years, 6 months ago
@kate-flournoy: Haven’t read Hunchback of Notre Dame yet, so I have no opinions to share. =P I actually haven’t really read any of Victor Hugo, just seen the movie for Les Mis… >.> I should probably work on changing that eventually!
