Write about stuff you know stuff about. Don’t write about an idea that you have no idea about.

Don’t stress about an outline. However, it helps me if I basically know where the story’s going before I begin writing. 🙂

It’s not as scary as you think to let your story be edited and critiqued by others. It’s actually the one of the most beneficial things you can do for your book.

Don’t panic if your first draft is awful. That’s what editing is for.

Don’t wait for inspiration to hit you. Go find it, hit it in the head with a shovel, and drag it back and lock it up in your closet until it gives you the information you want.
In other words, figure it out through trial and error. You and your writing will be better for it.

@adry_grace Exactly! From the beginning till now, the kingdom of Pen suffers violence and the violent take it by force.

Eat yogurt covered grapes and ice cream while you write. Seriously it’s very inspiring. Unless you have allergies.

On a more serious note… Watching people is very helpful to writing. How do they really react in situations, hands motions, nervous habits etc.?

@rolena-hatfield, yes! Watching and listening to people is great for your writing…and not to mention fun. I’d love to just sit at a coffee shop for a couple hours and watch people coming in and out and listen to their conversations. 🙂

@gretald @rolena-hatfield YES. That, and trying to read people’s faces. I know, I’m so creepy… but I love trying to guess what people are thinking by studying their expressions.

Haha @kate-flournoy! No, you’re not creepy. Studying people is quite fascinating. 😛

As an artist and a writer I study people all the time, whenever I go to Disneyland and it’s a busy day I like to simply sit on a bench and people-watch. I need to bring my sketchbook more often though.

Theater kid. Currently depressed because I can't stop listening to sad musicals.

I was at Scooter’s on SUnday for a bible study and ended up doing this while I was waiting for people. It was a much shorter period of time of course, but still so much fun. I would love sometime to go early and just for the sake of people watching.

also @kate-flournoy i try to read people’s faces as well. I like to try and read body language in general. sometimes I’ll randomly choose a person in a crowd and try to figure out what they’re doing/feeling based on body language.
