Hey guys! I’m bored with Andromeda right now (don’t freak out, I intend to come back to it later) so I’m just trying to get creative again…so I’m trying to plot a new novel.

Basically the subplot is a war, and I know nothing about politics or wars or stuff like that.

I want to make a war realistic and one that causes a legitimate threat to my characters and their livelihood. I’m trying to do research on why wars start irl and stuff like that.

My main idea is that I could have the main country be torn by civil war. One side hates the Queen (who’s become more of a dictator), and wants democracy, and the other side supports her and what she’s doing.

And then another country comes and tries to invade that country because they see the civil war as an opportunity to take over, since the country and it’s military is very divided.

Do you guys think this concept would work? Any tips for starting wars XDXD

@savannah_grace2009 all the wars my characters have been in have been started by someone else lol

but yeah, your idea sounds legit. Very legit. NGL if this happened in America right now, some country is likely gonna do something at least similar to what the third faction in your idea is doing.

Gerald handled that. You don’t question Gerald. (if you know you know)

The main thing I’d say is that wars usually don’t only start for one reason, and people also don’t join wars all for the same reason. Sorry, I know that’s probably not very helpful ? this isn’t a topic I’m very good on.

I like your idea and I hope plotting and stuff goes well! Good luck!

I think your idea works…it sounds like something that would happen, to me at least. I agree with Highscribe though.

but idk I’m a terrible person to ask—my siblings are always saying how crazy unrealistic my war plots are lolol ?

In my opinion, all wars are started by variations (or combinations of variations) of one thing.

                Pride

                Variations can be

                • Selfishness
                • Greed
                • Misunderstanding
                • Hatred
                • Jealousy

It’s always on one side, almost always on both sides.

Even when a “good” group attacks a “bad” group, they tend to do it because the bad group is “prideful” (In one of the variations at least) and has been “pushy” long enough.

Fear is also thrown into the scenario. (Though this may stem also from pride. ?‍♂️)

Sounds realistic to me! I just read the Wilderking trilogy which has a very similar plot that you might want to take ideas from and see how it’s executed. It’s a common plot though, I’m sure it (or some variation of it) is in many books, and it’s a great way to build tension.

So the idea you got is already pretty good! But if you need more inspo…

The War of 1812 was interesting, because the United States had just won her independence from Great Britain roughly 30 years ago, and then there they are fighting again. But France/Napoleon Bonaparte also played a role in this by pitting the two against each other so that he could take advantage of it. Basically the United States was caught in the middle of a conflict between France and Great Britain, but neither side acknowledged the US’s neutrality in the matter. Jefferson tried to adopt an act that would force them to recognize their neutrality and keep them out of it, but it kind of destroyed the American economy. Eventually, through Napoleon’s craftiness and the already present conflict, the situation grew worse leading to war between America and Great Britain. So disagreements between nations is for sure a huge factor in wars, especially when it comes to trade and stuff that directly affects the economy of a country.

And then of course there are revolutions and rebellions that kind of play out like a civil war in a nation. Like the French Revolution or the American War for Independence (the two of which are drastically different, but I won’t rant about that here XD). That’s a conflict in which the people would for sure be taking sides and having strong opinions.

If you choose a civil war, make sure to put lots of thought and planning into the different dynamics found within that war. And you can get ideas by studying other civil wars, especially in the US. Because it wasn’t over just one issue. Some people fought because they were loyal to their state, even though they maybe didn’t support slavery. Some fought because they were radical (or moderate) abolitionists. Others fought because they desired to keep the Union together, or wanted to start a separate country off of the states that had seceded. Ultimately Lincoln saw it as the South violating the contract of the Union, but the South saw it as a voluntary agreement that they could pull out of any time. But when you go down to the individual level, there are so many different opinions and reasons and viewpoints of the war.

And then of course you have wars like WWI and WWII (or the Russian invasion of Ukraine), started by power-hungry dictators or offended/threatened political leaders. Especially if there’s already a heated political climate, one misstep or purposeful move in the wrong direction can set a nation off and suddenly they’re declaring war.

Honestly though, i really like the idea you already have. It sounds realistic to me, I’d just warn you to make sure you study real and fictional wars to the get the dynamics right. Like, you don’t have to spend paragraphs describing the politics behind it all, but if you understand it and have a feel for what the political and economical climate would be during that war, you’ll be able to write it much more realistically and develop your characters opinions in a better and fully fleshed out way.

                              @esther-c

Okay, so I have some new ideas.

First I’m going to tell you about each government and political settings and then explain what my ideas are.

                              Andromeda

They’re set up similar to an oligarchy, like each race (Azer, Aquino, Estrello, and Pitt) send representatives to Lir and they meet to discuss rules. Often, the representatives’ families are very rich and powerful. So the laws made are more geared towards the rich. Similar to the late 1800s, the enonomy is very competitive, and there’s several very rich people with monopolies that try to control the market. Poor people are exploited and have low wages and poor working conditions.

                              Wadsat

Wadsat is where the Paynes come from. Some Paynes travel to Andromeda to find work, and since Paynes are new immigrants, then the Andromedans hire them as servants for low wages. Paynes work in factories as well. In previous years, Paynes were kidnapped and sold into slavery. Although that was years ago, racism is still very real and present. However now, Paynes are seen as a way for the rich people to produce merchandise for cheap, since they don’t feel guilty about paying Paynes less.

Wadsat has a democracy. They have a president and Paynes vote, like the US.

                              Erstonia

Erstonia is a monarchy. There is a king and a royal family, surrounded by a court of nobles and advisors.

                              The war:

Marcurious’s Father, King Robick is a good man and king (yes, I just changed that recently. I’m changing Marcurious’s backstory a lot!!!) however, after the Queen got sick and died, the king went off the deep end. He started drinking and being lax in his duties, and the stress was getting to him. His people began to question his competence and started to think maybe he shouldn’t be king anymore.

Anyways, then King Robick dies, and his younger brother Koen takes the throne (because in Erstonia, if the king dies and his son isn’t 21 yet, the court votes on which of the king’s brothers will rule next. When the brother dies, the crown passes to the prince.). Koen is a bad man, he’s very impulsive and is power hungry. He wants to invade Andromeda, because Andromeda has resources like iron, salt, oil, and coal that Erstonia doesn’t have.

Koen wants to just invade, but the court advises against it. Andromeda is very rich, and they have a good military, and Andromeda is separated from Erstonia by water, so it would not be very smart to just take ships and invade like that. Plus, Andromeda and Erstonia have fought before in the last hundred years, and the last war was very costly. War is expensive, so both countries wanted to avoid the war.

Andromeda fears getting into a war with Erstonia, but they’re worried that if they sell Erstonia their resources, they will become to powerful. Anyways, Andromeda and Erstonia arrange a meeting in Lir, Andromeda so that they can figure out how to negotiate without starting a war.

The Pythonos have wanted to take over Andromeda for a long time, and as tensions rise between the two countries they take a chance.

There’s a group of Paynes and poor races that are a terrorist group, and they target the rich families and the delegates. They’re tired of the way the government is run. The Pythonos hire the group to cause a commotion at the meeting. They end up sneaking in and poisoning the Azer delegate, and he dies mid-meeting. Everything erupts in chaos. The Andromedans are convinced that the Erstonians poisoned the delegate, and fighting starts.

The king escapes, but Marcurious and Livia (Livia’s dad is now the Aquino delegate) are taken as hostages by the terrorist group, because it’s not enough for the terrorists to get paid by the Pythonos. They want some spare cash out of it.

This is how the war starts, and how Marcurious and Livia meet.

                              What do you think?
