That’s why I think it would be easier to do if Tyn was there. She would bring up all the objections, so it would be easier to show that I don’t approve of forced labour.

Thank you for your feedback. I will think about it further.

That should work. I’ve been thinking about this a bit over the last few days and I’ve decided I really like this idea. I don’t know how similar it is in Canada, but my dad says a major problem with the American church is our disdain for authority, and how we don’t really have as much of a concept of absolute obedience as other countries, but God is king, and he requires absolute obedience. So yeah, I think a slave could teach Alan this very well.

I, for one, really like Roman numerals.

Thank you for your support! I’m still working on trying to piece everything together, but I do think I want to include that scene in some way.

              @whalekeeper @theducktator @ellette-giselle

Just an update for you all so you know I’m still working on this.

I’m currently trying to explore further for my outline and have switched to paper. Right now I’m trying to get everything I know about the story onto paper. I’ve started and stopped this a few times now, but feel I have fallen into a rythem and something I can use to keep moving forward. I have written down things for Alan, Eric, James, Martha, and Jade and some plot ideas as well. I really hope I will have a refined outline neer the end.

              My floor right now:

On this note, does anyone have any advice for this stage of Brainstorming? How do you go about this stage? Do you have any habits that help you think more efficiently? (I believe you had a form on this, Whaley. I’m trying to remember what people said there.)

Next stage after this is to find the core of the story. After that I will expand it into a more structured outline.

*Shivers* Ooh, I love outline brainstorming.

Do you have any habits that help you think more efficiently?

By this, do you mean a method of organizing your ideas? Because that’s my favorite way of making brainstorming quick and easy, while also productive.

IS THAT ALAN ABD MARTHA!!?!? *excited dance*

umm…. I don’t do that. Like, at all. I just go for it after hitting beginning, climax, and end. And fully graphing characters. I sketch out the characters. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I mean, I treat writing as me telling you what happened to my friends. I saw the events, here they are. If I do too much development I lose the rhythms and flow. I just keep in mind the things that I would tell you about the person and events if I was telling you something that happened to Molly friends that you haven’t met.
I doubt I’m any help right now.
                    sorry.
this kinda stuff just really all stays organized in my head. If I write it out, my brain says I no longer need to remember it, and then it’s hard to keep track of.

My “outlining” consists of writing random notes all over the margins of my paper as I write and forgetting about them. One thing I’ve thought about, and may try, is writing every plot idea I have on sticky notes, and then organizing them onto a wall.

Could you expand more on what you mane by that, please?

I like to write down every idea I have so that I don’t have to contain everything in my head and forget it. So, the opposite of Ellette. (Why are we always the opposite? Why??)

I organize the ideas by topic (plot, worldbuilding, etc) very deliberately. I’m trying to generate as many ideas as possible, and somehow, having a titled ‘plot’ list and a ‘worldbuilding’ list makes my brain want to fill up the page.

On a corkboard, I make realms of paper notes, like Ducktator’s sticky notes. In one corner, there are character ideas, another is magic, and so on.

Most recently, I got a large box of index cards, and I’m planning to divide up all the ideas for my two projects by broad topics alphabetically.

…This is why I want to be a librarian or something. XD

Basically I’m wondering if the process of organization zaps your brain with energy. That energy propels my brain, and I come up with more ideas to fill up my notes or lists or whatever. If you don’t like organizing things, my habits probably won’t work for you.

No worries. I usually write without outlining as well. I’m just trying to speed up my writing and thought I would give outlining a try to see if it would help me out.

I’ve been thinking of trying the sticky notes for the plot part as well. I purchased a whole bunch of them last week. I kind of like them because they allow me to write down ideas as they occur to me, but now I have to find a place to stick them up.

                            @whalekeeper

Ah, okay. I’ve heard this advice for many creative activities. I’m a perfectionist, so even when I try to be unbiased toward ideas and write them down without judgment, I often skip an idea just because it doesn’t seem to fit right at the moment. Also, I’ve been thinking about this story for a while already, especially the beginning, so I’m having a harder time generating different ideas for that. Do you ever have that problem? But maybe that is a sign I should go with what I already have.

Do you time yourself at all when you do this? One thing I am doing right now is ‘Here is paper. Here is pencil. Here are headings. Here are 15 minutes. Fill up white space.’ When the timer is done, I am done and move on to the next page. If I do happen to have another idea for a page I have finished, I write it down.

Basically I’m wondering if the process of organization zaps your brain with energy. That energy propels my brain, and I come up with more ideas to fill up my notes or lists or whatever. If you don’t like organizing things, my habits probably won’t work for you.

I think the organization would help me. One thing that is holding me back from just writing down every idea that comes to mind is the lack of order. I want the notes about Alan under Alan, not stuffed in the middle of Lyens. And I want that broken up into sections as well. The backstory should be in one place, and character development is in another, with random facts having their section.

I’m… gonna make things right! Make them the way their supposed to be! It’s my OCD!🎵

I do have to watch that I don’t go too far though. One thing I think I may do with an organization that may drain me says for Eric, I write down that his favourite day of the year is his birthday. Now I have to figure out the favourite day of the year for every character.

…This is why I want to be a librarian or something. XD

                            *Gasp!* That’s evil!

Thank you all for your help!

I was hoping to have that finished by Valentine’s day, but have fallen behind a bit. Hopefully, by next week it will be done.

Thank you! I like illustrations. This story started out as illustrations as well. I used to think I couldn’t write because English was my worst subject in school (partly due to some teachers who didn’t like me), so I would just draw the characters and imagine stories to go with them.

Do you ever have that problem?

Oh yeah, all the time. I’d say to write it down anyway, because there is always some reason why you had the idea in the first place.

Every idea has a nugget of interest behind it, and if you feel some appeal despite knowing it won’t work, write it down. Then think about why it appealed to you.

Maybe I imagine a character going through a villain arc, and spend a long time thinking about it, before ultimately scrapping it. Why did I give the idea so much thought? Does it attract me in some way? Maybe there is a quality to the character that can be part of the plot, even if I don’t expand it into a villain arc.

Do you time yourself at all when you do this?

I’ve never had to. But I can see how that can be a great incentive.

One thing I think I may do with an organization that may drain me says for Eric, I write down that his favourite day of the year is his birthday. Now I have to figure out the favourite day of the year for every character.

This is way too relatable. Well, realistically most people don’t have a favorite day of the year, so you can chalk up that random fact to his personality. He is the kind of person who would have a favorite day.

                                  *Gasp!* That’s evil!

Not gonna lie, I am extremely evil. 😈

The tabbed sections on the bottom are what I’ve done so far, and this is my first day with the notecards. My parents have graciously gifted me with four boxes. It’s better for me to go crazy with physical cards than to depend on technology for my everyday writing.

I used to think I couldn’t write because English was my worst subject in school (partly due to some teachers who didn’t like me)

That’s their loss. I tip my hat to you. I know how difficult it is to like a subject because it wasn’t properly taught.
