You also got me rooting for a romance between Martha and Alan! Don’t know whether that was intentional or whether us readers were just like “get them together.” XD
I don’t remember Marthalan!! Everyone says it’s there but I didn’t see it at all. XDXD Not saying it’s bad, I just didn’t detect it.

January 23, 2025 at 6:00 pm #195866I think it was hinted at, especially towards the end. I keep getting this urge to look it up for you and then I’m like wait a second, TNPT doesn’t have a website or a fandom or anything yet lol
Pray, thou shalt simply add ketchup unto the mac'n'cheese.

January 23, 2025 at 7:39 pm #195868This is a list of all the suggestions of romance between Alan and Martha – that I can find.
This excludes any interactions which can just as easily be platonic interactions, such as Alan and Martha’s discussions of Charles, dragons, or the Faithful.
At one point, Alan makes a plan to save Martha from prison, which makes her a damsel in distress. This trope can have a romantic connotation. I couldn’t find one quote to encapsulate this plot point with a strong romantic connotation, though.
Chapter the 9th
There was a lone occupant in the room. A young woman sweeping. She looked to be about Alan’s age. Perhaps a little bit older. When Alan entered the room, she paused and (timidly) called for her father, then returned to sweeping. [I felt like mentioning their similarity in age can make readers suspicious.]
[…]
As soon as Alan had said that, a gasp came from behind. He turned to see the young woman… Martha had again paused her work and was staring at him. Her eyes found his hair, and she wore the familiar expression of someone connecting the dots. When she noticed Alan looking at her, she blushed and returned to her work again. This time with a little too much enthusiasm.
Chapter the 12th
The wizard glanced back to where Martha was. The girl stood there, staring at them. When she saw Alan looking back, she blushed and looked away. She did look like she was guilty of something. But then again, her father had made it clear that he did not like The Faithful.
Chapter the 16th
“Hey,” Alan called.
The Humlers turned around.
“Thank you for taking me there. I thought I would never see my dad again.”
Martha smiled her timid smile. “You’re welcome.”
“I guess… I will see you around then,” Alan told her.
Martha’s smile faded and she turned and followed Eric into the stables.
Alan groaned inwardly. If only the Humlers and his father weren’t some of The Faithful. Things would be so much easier.
“She’sss cute, isn’t she?” Oliver said.
“What?”
The gorb grinned. “You were looking sad there, mate.”
Alan gave him a disgusted look. “I was just saying thank you to her. She’s the reason I got to see my father today. Just because I say thank you to a girl doesn’t mean I like her.”
“Oh.” Oliver glanced around as if looking for a way to escape.
Chapter the 17th
Perhaps she should explain more about why she went out. Explain that it was because of that young soldier she had gone out with today. [I just added this because it sounds like it means something else in a different context. XD]
[…]
Ted shook his head. “I don’t know what to do with you anymore, Martha. I expected much better from you. You should be old enough by now to make your own decisions. You’re old enough to be married now!”
Chapter the 30th
Perhaps he should have gotten Trance from the stable, but that would have required entering The Faithful’s village and explaining what he was going to do to his friends. Martha certainly would have been one of them, and Alan couldn’t. He felt that she and the rest of them would try to stop him. [Specifically references Martha over the others.]
Chapter the 33rd
Martha felt a little silly, no one had heard of either of them since Mr. Wherl was kidnapped and Alan disappeared. She blushed. Hopefully, no one would think she had feelings for Alan.
But at the same time, that feeling wouldn’t go away. She wondered if she should push the topic further.
