Hey guys! I know I’m remotely new and none of you really know much after my current WIP, buuuuut I need some help. XD I’m trying to name my villain who’s going to have a redemption arc at the end. Light and darkness is a huge theme in the story, and the fight between the two is clearly played out in him. I’m being very matter-of-fact with his name, I want it to mean something close to darkness. His name before joining the ‘darkness’ was Kiran (which means beam of light). I have a few options that I wanted to hear your opinions on but also see if you guys had any other suggestions.

Bellinor, Bronson, Cronan, and Erebus are some ideas I have at the moment.

@euodia-vision. Names are always so hard, aren’t they!? 😂

        Here’s a few suggestions though!

        1. Akmad (meaning dark, Muslim Origin)
        2. Erebus (meaning darkness, Greek Origin)

But anyways…I’ll reach out with more names if I find any more!!! ❤️

Ugh yes they are. There’s a meme that talks about naming characters and it has the author say “I’m going to make this way more complicated than it needs to be” and it’s SO true. 😂

Oooo thanks! Erebus was one I was considering… it’s weird cause I have this picture in my mind of what he looks like and with each name I’m trying to decide if he looks like that or not. 😂 I should make a character collage for him so you guys can see him.

            @euodia-vision. Lol, that’s sooo true. 😂

You’re welcome!!! ❤️ Lol, I get that!!! Some names I guess do fit…never really thought about it before until my family said my brother didn’t look like the wrong name that our Youth Pastor had accidentally called him, lol! 😆 A character collage would be cool (and helpful)!!! 🙂

Ooh your villain sounds really cool! I really like Bronson.

I just went through the process of naming my villain as well! I just looked up names that mean what I wanted him to represent! (I ended up finding the perfect name for him but it doesn’t mean anything specific to his arc lol). Here’s a few names that I found:

Darcel (French origin) meaning: “dark one”.

Delaney  (Irish origin) meaning: “dark challenger”

Akmad (Arabic origin) meaning: “dark, praised one”.

Dade (Latin, English origin) meaning: “dark one, exploited”

Devlin (Irish origin) meaning “the unlucky/dark one”

Donahue (Gaelic origin) meaning “dark fighter”

Donovan (Irish origin) meaning “dark warrior”

              Hope those helped!

Perhaps you could have a name that suggests the idea of not only darkness, but shadowy, foggy, starved, shady curtain type word to show the idea that he was once of light, but that light has been either blocked or dimmed. Also, do you prefer real world roots, or just meaning within your world?

He is perfect in Justice, yet He is perfect in Mercy, even when we fail Him. For this, He is good.

Haha yesss! Okay, I shall try to do that today… I already have an entire playlist for him but he still lacks an official name. 😂

                      Thanks!

Oh cool! Wait, so how did you end up finding the name? 😂 Oooo, I like those! As I’ve been going through name options I’ve been trying to figure out which names feel like they’d ‘fit’ in a fantasy story. I mean, any name could be in a fantasy story but then like, Dwayne (which means ‘dark one’) doesn’t fit? Ya know? 😂 It’s weird and complicated. Thus leading to me taking days to name my character. XD

Ooooh, that is an interesting idea! I shall do some research… At the moment I’m going for real-world roots, but I’m open to meaning within my world!

Oooo I like your villain concept! =D YAY for redemption arcs! XD I love those so much, but especially if they’re well done.

Names that mean dark + a bonus name that doesn’t mean that but the meaning still fits with your story but not necessarily this character:

                          • Keary -Dark
                          • Kedron – Shady and dark (but also I’ve seen it come up as ‘of the cedars’ so take that as you will)
                          • Kerr – Little dark (also seen this come up as marsh dweller and wrong handed so…yeah)
                          • Kerrim – Dark
                          • Kuraim – Dark and gloomy
                          • Bonus name! Cahya – One who is light in darkness

"...I did not say to the seed of Jacob, 'Seek Me in vain..."
                          (Part of) Isaiah 45:19

Here are some names that go along with the dark theme

                            Inei (Dark, Shadow)

                            Senko (Shadow)

Blagdan (One from the dark valley)

                            Varjo (Shade or Shadow)

                            Aadhar (Darkness)

                            Cethin (Something resembling a shadow)

This girl is armed with books, coffee, and writing accoutrements!

                              Ah… character naming… every writer’s struggle. 🤣

You’ve already got some good ideas. I really like Light’s suggestion of Donovan, since it is more common. Her suggestion of Devlin I thought was cool as well. But if you’re going for more fantasy like, then I really like either Devlin or Bronson. Gwyndalf’s suggestion of Kedrin sounds really cool too.

If I’m able to do a little research, then I’ll be sure to get back to you! 😀

*Proceeds to search “names that mean dark” in Google Search*

Blake: Meaning “dark” in Old English,

                                Ciaran: Meaning “dark” in Irish.

                                Dargan: Meaning “dark-haired” in Irish.

                                Darcy: Meaning “dark” in Irish.

Duncan: Meaning “dark warrior” in Gaelic.

(Darth, which sounds like Dargan and Darcy, means dark in Irish as well. You could just call him Darth Vader, really.)

                                Names I think sound dark:

                                Raven

                                Rook

                                Cole

Anything that starts with X. (Xavier, Xander, etc.)

                                “Everything is a mountain”

With all this talk of darkness, I thought of the Elvish word “Mornië.” Honestly though it sounds more like a girl’s name, nickname being “Mor”.

“Huinë” also means darkness, but like outer darkness.

                                  Lómë means dusk or night.
