@otherworldlyhistorian The book is set in a German town of my own creation, just a small one, but it’s on the western side of Germany, which is why American forces get to it rather than, say, Soviet forces.

The Nuremburg Trials may be briefly tied in, but the book is pretty much over by that point…😅

Cool. Your story is quite interesting and I have enjoyed some of your the characters you posted on the characters thing (especially Ezekiel).

@mineralizedwritings Hey Min!!! ❤️❤️❤️🙋🏻‍♀️ How are you this fine Sunday afternoon? 🥰

I’m doing really good actually! 🥰🥰🥰

We had a really great worship and service today! Pastor preached on when Jesus was on the Cross and spoke to John his disciple and to his mother Mary, when he said “woman, behold your son” and “son, behold your mother” and tied that into a message about how we are supposed to care for our parents, grandparents, and whoever else that needs us, especially the ones who can’t care for themselves, and really putting emphasis on the fact that even in the midst of his suffering, Jesus thought of/took care of his mother. It was really, really good. ❤️

I’ll be working Nursery on Easter Sunday…working with the little ones🥰😅

Sounds like a awesome message!Ours was about how those who are following Christ look like fools in the sight of the world, and if you don’t, maybe you aren’t living a christian life, because we will look different. It was good!

I’m doing pretty well thanks for asking! I cleaned sooo much yesterday XD

I’m doing a little stick man animation rn lol. It’s kinda cloudy out, so that’s too bad. I has a art and design class on campus starting on tuesday (could yall pray it goes well?) I’m nervous/excited XD It’s scary that it’s on campus and I’ll have classmates a lot older than me (or the same age, because anyone could be there) idk, I’m a little nervous but I did some research on the teacher and it sounds like it’ll be a good class.

And I’m writing a bit more than usual too! It’s getting harder to organize the plot the further in I get. Have you guys been writing at all?

Also super random but I got 100% on my film paper on Gettysburg (good movie btw) and I had a tough history teacher last quarter too. Have either of you seen it?

Light how have you not listened to cheering you on yet! XD It is the best, isn’t it?

Thanks girl!! And that’s so great you have so many pages! ╰(*°▽°*)╯

                        I’ll bet Riker’s having a great time….

                        😖😬😬

What part are you at rn? Is it like rising action or nearing climax?

I’m at 138 pages rn and about 46k words… like almost 50k! I can’t believe it! I’m just starting on Laysons arc a little bit at this point. I’m trying to figure out how to write Lesli and Keiryn’s new lives in the professions district, I want it to be a little bit of like a school drama kinda thing XD if that makes since.

                            Haha…yeah…no….he’s not. Neither is Leon…😢😭

I basically just hit the climax…😲😲😲 but it’s a slow descent…doesn’t just go down from there, lol… (i might post the most recent chapter for you and Light in just a sec, actually! (even though it will spoil…XD))

Here is the most recent chapter y’all…😢😢😢😭😭😭

This is an…emotional chapter, to say the least…

                              August 1944

Almost a month since he had joined the Violet Iris’. People were being rescued…the Nazis being stopped…and Riker got to be a part of it.

                              He was thankful.

The truth didn’t change though. In the end, he was still a murderer. But it was nice and good to help people. Riker was tired of doing nothing to fight back.

And now, he could fight back.

And Ezekiel, Fin, Leo, Joshua, Jakob, Reuben, Wolfgang…they were all nice to work with.

                              Unlike some people.

“I’m surprised. Truly, Riker, I am. I suppose you actually can do more than paperwork.” Erich mused, standing behind Riker as he filed paperwork.

‘Speaking of some people…’ Riker thought to himself, filing another stack of paperwork and setting it aside. “Don’t you have work to do?”

Erich was transferred to the camp at the end of July, Hans finally not having enough work for him to do. Erich acted like the other officers and guards…taking out his anger on the prisoners. Thankfully, with Esther, Erich’s old childhood friend visiting on occasion, he had improved a bit…but not by much.

Erich smirked, leaning back against the wall. “I do, but I was watching you work first. You can do more than paperwork, and I’m happily surprised. Too bad you still do it a lot…it’s a shame. You’ve been busy a lot lately…what have you been doing?”

Riker bent back over the paperwork, tossing a strand of his hair behind his left ear. “I have work to do, Erich. Do you mind?”

Erich shrugged. “I suppose I’ll make my exit now. But if you ever hear or see any…suspicious activity, let me know.” He turned and left the room.

Riker had often seen Erich trying to stay around him and Fin…he was spying, without a doubt, maybe even on Hans’ orders. Riker didn’t feel any fear nor anger at the thought, except maybe fear for Fin and everyone else in the Violet Iris’.

Riker shook his head, tossing aside the disturbing thoughts for just a few moments, turning his attention back to the paperwork.

There were papers that were always ultimately destroyed…papers that held death records. Almost everyone had “heart attack” labeled as their cause of death. But Riker knew that wasn’t true.

Tears threatened to form and fall, but he shoved them back, knowing he didn’t have the justification to cry.

He gently and quickly flipped through the pages as he usually did. He was responsible. He had killed so many innocent people.

A single name caught his eye. His fingers stopped flipping through pages.

An even heavier weight settled on his shoulders. The papers fell from his hands. His lips dried. His body trembled. His eyes filled with tears.

He backed into the wall. Sank against it. His head throbbed.

He killed…he murdered…Riker moaned. The world around him spun. His knees rose to his chest. He buried his face in his hands. A sob escaped his throat.

He sobbed, moaned, “I killed her…oh, oh, God, what have I done?”

                              ~*~

Leon lifted another heavy load of metal rods. Whatever they were helping build, it was big.

Isaiah and Yosef both worked close by, shoveling dirt into wheelbarrows.

“Prisoner 55464, put down your load and stand at attention!” A guard yelled in angry German. They always sounded angry. They always yelled.

But Leon would be stupid to disobey. He set the rods down and turned to face the youthful guard. The guard grabbed his arm and dragged him away.

Maybe Leon would be punished for some kind of infraction. He could rouse nothing but anger at the thought.

The guard dragged him into an office compound building, same as another guard had a couple of weeks ago when Leon had gotten to see Aadelheide. He didn’t dare to hope that he was going to see her again now, but it would be nice.

The guard shoved Leon into yet another barely furnished room and slammed the door closed.

The officer sitting at the table raised his head.

Leon’s brown eyes met Riker’s dark blue. Tear stains trailed down Riker’s cheeks. His hat sat on the table. Sun came through the window, reflecting off of the Schutzstaffel insignia on his pitch-black uniform and the silver wedding ring on his left hand.

Leon stood in silence. What did Riker want? Did he, for some reason, want to hurt Leon and Aadelheide more?

Sure, maybe he’d let Leon see Aadelheide…but he had also refused to help them when they needed someone’s help the most.

Riker brushed his wavy, awry hair back with his hand, letting out a deep breath. “…There’s no easy way to put this…”

Leon rolled his eyes. He had to drag this on? “Just tell me.”

“Leon, there is something I…” dread laced Riker’s tone, “have to tell you”

                              “Just tell me already.”

Riker ran his tongue over his lips. Drummed his fingers on the table, closing and opening his eyes. A few stray tears escaped his eyes and coursed down his cheeks.

Leon raised an eyebrow. What was he crying for? What was wrong? And why did he need to talk to Leon?

Riker finally opened his eyes and faced Leon again, eyes brighter with tears. “…Your wife is dead.”

Leon blinked a few times. “Excuse me?”

                              “Your wife Aadelheide…is dead.”

She had been coughing…she had been limping…she had been pale and weak. “You’re lying to me.”

                              “She’s dead, Leon…she’s dead…it was in the paperwork…she…she’s gone.”

A sudden, furious, burning, rippling anger rose to the surface, coming out at Riker in full force. “You killed her!”

“I’m sorry, Leon…I’m so sorry…” Riker moaned, burying his face in his hands.

But he wasn’t the one who had lost his wife. He wasn’t the one who had been thrown into this camp. He wasn’t the one who was starving. He wasn’t the one who was treated like dirt under everyone else’s feet. “She’s dead because of you!”

                              “I know…”

He didn’t have time to deal with his pain. He didn’t have time to deal with his grief.

His wife was gone. His wife was gone because she was killed. His wife was gone because Riker had murdered her. Tears coursed down his cheeks in droves. “My wife is dead! My wife is dead, and you murdered her!”

Riker moaned. “I’m so sorry Leon…I’m so sorry…”

Leon’s fists clenched and unclenched. “Sorry isn’t going to bring my wife back.”

Leon stared up at the rough, cracked ceiling above him in the darkness.

Isaiah and Yosef slept…almost every man in the barracks slept.

But Leon didn’t sleep. He couldn’t sleep. Tears coursed down his cheeks.

But other than tears, all he felt…was numbness.

                              He didn’t even feel angry anymore…or grieved…or sad…or broken… or…something.

He was supposed to feel an emotion.

                              He was supposed to feel…something.

                              His wife was gone.

He’d never hear her voice. He’d never see her smile. He’d never see her face. He’d never hold her in his arms. He’d never kiss her.

                              Ever again.

                              Aadelheide was gone.

Nothing and no one could ever bring her back.

He didn’t have her. His other part that made him whole…was gone. The love of his life…was gone. The woman he had promised the rest of his life to…was gone.

She was gone. It was that simple.

But Leon was supposed to feel something.

                              Yet he didn’t.

He just felt…nothing. He was absolutely, completely, entirely…empty.

He wanted to feel an emotion. He wanted to just feel…something.

He didn’t want to be empty. He didn’t want to be numb.

                              He just wanted Aadelheide back.

                              But he couldn’t have that.

More tears broke loose and coursed down Leon’s cheeks. Tears of emptiness… tears of…nothing…nothing but pain that he still didn’t quite feel.

Riker had killed her…the camp had killed her….way before she was supposed to. She had a whole life ahead of her. The two of them had a whole life ahead of them. A whole life to live with their kids.

But hers had been cut short.

All of the dreams he had once had for their future were destroyed.

She had been killed when she could have been saved.

                              Leon blinked.

The camp wasn’t the only thing to blame…Riker wasn’t the only person to blame, even though he was the main one.

Because someone else was to blame.

Someone who could have saved Aadelheide.

Someone who could have done something, yet didn’t.

Someone who could have stopped everything.

Leon wiped tears from his eyes. Grit his teeth. Clenched his fists.

Aadelheide could have been saved but she wasn’t.

She had been abandoned, even though she believed.

And if God abandoned Leon’s wife…if God let Aadelheide die…then Leon wanted nothing to do with him.

Woah that was sooo sad! It was really good though! The scene with Riker and Leon was really good. And I feel for both of them! Honestly, this sounds like a villain origins story for Leon, but I believe he’ll figure it out eventually…?

@mineralizedwritings I know…😢😭💔 Thank you!!! ❤️❤️❤️ Awww, thanks, I’m glad it was really good and I’m glad you feel for both of them!!! (I feel like Leon is misunderstood a lot…but I understand where he’s coming from…I mean, how many of us wouldn’t do the same, if we’re honest?😢)

Haha…didn’t think about it before, but yeah, it does…XD😅 Don’t you worry…both Leon and Riker will have a positive arc in the end…❤️ (it does sort of continue into the sequel, but Leon does learn to let go of his hatred, that I can assure you of)

Oh, and in other news…I wanted to share this very tiny piece of dialogue from another scene in the book, lol 😂😂😂XD

“But another thing we do is blow-up airfields to keep Luftwaffe planes away from the allies, along with factories so the Nazis can’t build more weapons and vehicles.” Leo added.

Reuben winked. “That’s the most fun thing we do.”

Lol…I just had to share with you…😂😂😂
