I don’t think I’ve heard empty, I’ll have to go listen to it. Have you heard Millionaire? doesn’t really go with characters but it’s a fun song and the music video is really well shot.

I’m late to the party, but I read your bizarre anecdote on Life, today. Your prose is remarkably distinct! It’s something akin to a P.G. Wodehouse in training, if you’re familiar with him, only more rhythmic and poetic. Excellent wordsmithing.

Part 4 is here!!! 😁😁😁💖💖💖
But first, a couple things.
First off, I was listening quite a bit to the song “Beautifully Broken” by Plumb when writing this, and it’s a great song in general and for Reuben, so I’d recommend listening to it! .😁
Second, this scene is very different from my original plan…Reuben stole the keyboard and ran away with it. 😂 But I love it even more now. 💖💖💖
Third, this one does have a small CONTENT WARNING bc there is a brief sad/traumatic flashback to Reuben’s childhood. But it can easily be skipped if you want to, and it’s not graphic at all, I promise! I’m not planning on any of the REALLY BAD abuse or anything like that in my books really being described, bc I understand that some people are more sensitive than others, and I want my books to focus on hope, not pain and suffering. Okay, that small warning/rant over now. 😅😂

PART 4!!!!!! 😍😍😍
Reuben stroked Wolfgang’s hair off of his sweaty forehead.
Wolfgang coughed. “Reuben…am I…am I gonna make it?”
Reuben smiled, fighting back tears. “Of course, Wolfi…of course you’re going to make it. Tomorrow at the latest, you’ll be up and running around like normal.”
Wolfgang smiled. “Yeah…you-you’re right.”
Reuben stood. “Do you want another book?”
He’d already read Wolfgang two books, but he was more than happy to read another.
Wolfgang paused, but slowly nodded. “Yeah…I-I’d like that.”
Reuben nodded and went to the bookshelf, perusing the shelves, and, facing away from Wolfgang…his tears broke loose and coursed down his cheeks.
His vision blurred, he just grabbed a random book off the shelf and wiped away his tears before turning to Wolfgang again.
He smiled, determined to be strong…happy…brave…for his baby brother. “Alright. I have another-“
The door opened, and Reuben stopped.
Joshua and Jakob stepped in, Joshua with a big smile on his face. He held up a small bag. “We have some medicine for Wolfgang.”
“You do?” Reuben asked, and his voice cracked and tears fell.
Joshua smiled softly. “We do…Dietrich bought it. Alright, Wolf, can you take some medicine for us?”
Wolfgang shrugged and coughed. “I-I guess…”
Would medicine be enough? Wolfgang was already so weak…would medicine be enough to save him?
Or…or…was it too late?
“I-I’ll be back in a minute.” And Reuben set down the book and left the room before any of his brothers could say a word.
He walked further down the hall and got to the staircase.
The attic wasn’t completely dark during the day, since it had a window…and it was…well…as good of a place as any to hide.
Reuben went up the stairs, and once at the top, he closed the door so no one would know where he had gone.
He sat down on the cold wood floor, brought his knees up to his chest, and cried.
Wolfgang could die…and Reuben would lose him.
He’d lose his baby brother.
He didn’t want to lose him…Wolfgang was so happy…youthful…he always brightened the room.
He reminded Reuben that there was still good in the dark world Reuben found himself surrounded by.
He couldn’t lose Wolfgang. He just couldn’t.
Reuben sobbed harder.
He didn’t want to lose Wolfgang. He didn’t. He didn’t. He didn’t.
He buried his face in his knees, crying even harder.
If he lost Wolfgang…he wouldn’t know what to do. He didn’t know if life could even be bright if Wolfgang was taken away.
Wolfgang was the brightness in Reuben’s life…had been for so long.
If Reuben…if he lost his baby brother…he would be without that brightness.
A door creaked open, and Reuben turned, expecting Joshua or Jakob or maybe even Leo…one of his brothers, at least. He was ready to tell them that he was okay, that he just needed a minute, and that he needed to get back to Wolfgang…but someone else Reuben had never guessed walked into the attic.
Reuben blinked. Once. Twice. Thrice. “…R-Riker? What-what are you doing here?”
“Finding you, it seems.” Riker replied with a playful smile, but he studied Reuben, and his smile faded. “Hey…what’s wrong?”
Reuben wiped away tears and sniffed. Now someone had seen his tears. If Felix or Frida found out…more tears fell at just the thought. “I-I’m okay…I-I just needed a minute…I need to get back to Wolfgang.”
“Your other brothers have him…he’s taking the medicine and eating a little something…he’s okay.”
“I-I need to go see him…I-I need to.” Reuben whispered, angrily swiping away tears.
He couldn’t let his father and stepmother figure out he was crying.
He couldn’t be beaten again.
“Reuben…he’s okay. You can stay up here…you can cry.”
Reuben shook his head. “No…they-they’ll find out…my parents will find out.” He wrapped his arms around his body and closed his eyes, tight.
“They won’t find out…and it’s okay, Reuben…it’s really okay.”
Reuben shook his head, and more tears fell loose. “No…they-they will. Tears are a-a-a sign of w-weakness. They-they’ll find out…they’ll…they’ll…” He trailed off, slowly rocking himself back and forth.
“Maybe this will teach you a lesson.” Frida snarled, at the cellar door.
Reuben, already bleeding, sore, and crying, rushed for the door. “Mutti! Wait! I’ll be good! I promise!”
The door slammed closed in his face, he slipped on the stairs, and fell backwards onto the hard, cold concrete floor, leaving him in the darkness.
He curled into a ball…bleeding…breathless…aching…and cried.
“Reuben…?” A soft hand touched his shoulder.
Reuben pulled away with a small whimper, only for the memory to disappear…and he realized he wasn’t there anymore. “Riker?”
The officer got down on one knee in front of Reuben. “Reuben…stay up here. It’s okay…they won’t find out…I promise.”
“But they-they will. They-they’ll find out and they…they…they’ll b-beat me for c-crying. I-I don’t want to be b-beaten again…t-tears are a sign of w-weakness…”
Riker gripped Reuben’s shoulders. “They won’t find out.”
“They-they might.” Reuben mumbled through tears, wrapping his arms tighter around himself.
But he wasn’t only scared of being beaten.
There was something else he was even more terrified of.
Reuben looked up at Riker, vision blurred by tears.
“…Is Wolfi…Is Wolfgang going to die…?”
“He’ll be okay, Reuben…I know he will.”
“But h-how can you be sure? How do we know that he w-w-won’t die?” Reuben whispered, breath beginning to heave, heart thudding viciously in his head, causing his head to throb.
He was starting to hyperventilate.
Riker got down on the floor, and Reuben watched him, waiting for an answer…a reminder…something…but to be honest, Reuben didn’t want those…he just…he wanted…comfort.
But if Riker gave him an answer…he’d be…satisfied. He wouldn’t complain. He knew not to.
But comfort…Reuben loved that…craved that…so much more.
And he got it.
Riker’s arms wrapped around him…pulled him close…and Reuben crumpled in Riker’s arms with sobs.
It reminded him of being held by his brothers…and he craved the comfort being held in someone’s arms brought.
“I-I don’t want to lose him.” Reuben sobbed.
Riker held him closer. “I know…I know you don’t want to lose him…none of us do. But he’ll be okay…I know he will be…he’s strong…he’ll get through this.”
Reuben nodded, sinking deeper into Riker’s embrace.
He felt warm…safe…and not alone.
His breathing slowly steadied, and his heartrate finally began to slow back to normal.
Reuben wiped away tears. “Thank you…I-I thought I wanted to be alone, but…”
“You actually wanted someone to remind you that everything would be okay…and you wanted someone to notice you.”
Reuben slowly nodded, coming out of Riker’s arms. “Y-yeah…I guess.” He wiped away tears and studied Riker, before pausing. “Are you okay…?”
Riker blinked, but his hand slowly came up to his right cheek, where there was a fairly fresh-looking bruise. “Oh, that.” He whispered. He gave Reuben a small smile. “You don’t need to worry about that. I’m fine.”
“Someone hit you…didn’t they?”
“Come on, let’s go back downstairs to the second floor.” Riker replied. Stood. “Your brothers are probably wondering where you went.”
Reuben stood, understanding filling every vein of his body. “…It was your father, wasn’t it?”
Riker’s eyes widened, and his gaze fell, shame filling his features. “Come on, Reuben…let’s go.”
Reuben slowly nodded, wiping away his few, final tears. He smiled.
Riker had comforted him when he needed it…the least Reuben could do was the same.
“We can go downstairs…but first…” Reuben stepped forward towards his future brother-in-law…and hugged him, tight. “…I think you need this.”

…okay not really but I felt like doing that…
POOR REUBEN & RIKER!!! (AND WOLFIE) (sorry, I’m not going to reference him as ‘Wolfgang’…cause I’ve read a different character with that name and I think of that character otherwise)I honestly don’t think I could pick a favorite of your characters if I tried. XD I like most of the main cast too much…but then again, can one like characters too much? Nah.
One question, how do the brothers and Riker know each other?
