Wow, that was so good! I love the brothers, and there struggles are so relatable and well portrayed! Poor Leo 😭😭😭 I love him and he better get some rest at some point 😭 ( I may or may not have to call the protection squad soon)

Not sure how to feel about this scene, although sweet, I feel like she might be giving him false hope. God let’s bad things happen, and Wolfgang could die if the illness is bad. I get what your going for, but I would personally have her say something different. Idk what she even should say, it’s hard to know what to tell somebody in the brothers situation, because you know God will be there for them and help them through it, but he might not fix it like you want. And tbh, that’s a hard thing to tell somebody who’s really going through it.

It’s a little bit shorter, but I love it just as much. 💕💕💕
The crisp winter breeze blew, making the balcony sway slightly. Jakob kept his hands on the railing, savoring the numbness now in his fingers.
If only the rest of him could be numb.
He let out a deep breath, and a white puff left, his breath showing in the cold.
This balcony was where he had promised Angelina…who was now his fiancée…that he wouldn’t let hatred consume him.
Joshua wanted the same.
But how could Jakob not hate them for what they had done to him and his brothers? Wasn’t Joshua angry? Didn’t Jakob’s brothers hate what their father and stepmother had done to them?
How could any of them not be angry? How could any of them not hate Felix and Frida?
His fists clenched, and Jakob fought back threatening tears.
Maybe…maybe deep inside…he really didn’t want to be this way.
Yes, he was angry…very angry and he wanted to see his parents pay for all the horrible things they had done…but some days…when he seemed angry…he really wasn’t…he was just…broken.
Footsteps sounded, and Jakob turned, but he turned back around when he saw Joshua. “Oh…hey, Joshua.”
“Hello Jakob.”
Silence ensued between the two brothers, and Jakob forced back the tears that threatened to fall.
He didn’t want Joshua to see him cry.
He didn’t want anyone to see him cry.
“…I’m sorry about what happened in there. I shouldn’t have yelled at you. I didn’t show you love and patience like I should have…I was a bad Christian in there and an even worse older brother…and I’m sorry.”
Jakob shook his head, still not turning around. “You don’t have to apologize…“
“Yes, I do. I shouldn’t have treated you that way. I’ve been impatient with you…and I should have been more patient. I know you’re struggling…and that’s okay…we all have struggles. I wanted my way so bad that I didn’t realize how much I could hurt you. I’m sorry, Jakob…for everything.”
Jakob turned around, and a few tears escaped and rolled down his cheeks.
Joshua slightly looked up, their eyes met, and Joshua’s eyes widened. “What did I…? I’m sorry, Jakob…I-I just-“
“No…no, Joshua, don’t apologize. Please. You didn’t do anything wrong. You apologized…and thank you for doing so. It’s just…” Jakob trailed off, rubbing the back of his neck.
This is where things got hard. Honesty was rarely ever easy.
“…I’m angry at our father and stepmother for what they’ve done…very, very angry. Angrier than I ever would have thought possible a long time ago. But the anger…it feels…restless inside of me…unable to be quenched…some days, I want it to go away…but other days…I crave it…and I-I don’t know why.”
“It’s your way of coping.” Joshua whispered softly.
Jakob raised an eyebrow. “Coping?”
Joshua looked up at him again. “It’s been your way of dealing with all your pain and grief and trauma…your way of forgetting what you’re going through…your way of trying to heal. It’s the reason why you’re able to not be so bothered anymore when you’re abused…because you’ve used hatred to cope with it.”
Jakob slowly nodded.
Was that it? Was anger his way of coping with trauma?
“I-I guess you might be right. Just like how Wolfgang has his optimism and youthfulness, and you….well, have your faith to cope…”
“And Leo and Reuben haven’t found ways to cope…which is why everything that happens seems to affect them the most…” Joshua whispered.
Jakob nodded. It made sense.
But he was still angry…and in some ways, he still wanted to be angry.
“…Is being angry so wrong?”
Joshua bit his lip…and slowly shook his head. “No…I don’t think being angry is wrong. I think…it’s okay to be angry sometimes. But when that anger turns into hatred…that’s when we hurt ourselves and the people we love the most.”
It’s why Jakob was slowly pushing his brothers away…not wanting them to be hurt when he finally hurt his parents like his heart so ached to do.
Jakob turned back around, and his grip on the railing tightened.
“Because when you have so much hatred in your heart…there isn’t much space left for anyone else.”
Jakob slowly turned back around…and heard a door open.
The front door, judging by the direction and quietness of the sound.
“Jakob…who would be here right now?”
Jakob pressed a finger to his lips and motioned for Joshua to follow him.
They entered back into the mansion, Jakob leading Joshua back to the living room.
Frau Adelmann turned and faced them. “One of the servant girls got the door…it must be someone from your family, else she wouldn’t have opened the door.”
Jakob nodded, preparing for the worst.
If his family came for Joshua or Leo or Reuben or Wolfgang, especially right now, he would fight tooth and nail.
Footsteps sounded…and Dietrich came around the corner in full Luftwaffe uniform. He removed his hat and nodded towards them. “Frau Adelmann. Jakob. Joshua.”
Frau Adelmann smiled. “Hello, Dietrich. Are you hungry? I can make you something.”
Dietrich smiled faintly and shook his head. “No but thank you. I’m not hungry right now…and I have to make this brief. I’m not even supposed to be here right now. Unofficially, I’m here, but officially, I’m not here at all.”
Jakob raised an eyebrow, fists slightly clenching. Then why was he here? Just to make their lives more miserable or something?
Frau Adelmann raised an eyebrow. “Then why are you here…?”
Dietrich pulled something out from behind his back and held it out to Frau Adelmann. “I got some medicine for Wolfgang.”
Jakob’s fists instantly unclenched.
Medicine…medicine for…Wolfgang…?
Frau Adelmann’s eyes brightened with tears, and she wrapped her arms around Dietrich, hugging him tight. “Oh, Dietrich, you have no idea how much this means…thank you so very much!”
“You’re welcome.” Dietrich replied softly, hugging her before letting her go.
Frau Adelmann wiped away tears and smiled up at Dietrich. “You should probably get going now. If your stepfather or mother finds out you were here when you shouldn’t be…” She trailed off, leaving the rest of the words unspoken…but everyone in the room understood where she was going.
Dietrich nodded, putting his hat back on. “I’ll be going now…I just thought Wolfgang would want and need some medicine.”
He began walking away.
Dietrich had bought Wolfgang medicine…? Why?
“Dietrich, wait.”
Dietrich turned around, just at the corner, to face Jakob. “…Yes?”
“…Thank you…”
Dietrich smiled. “What else are brothers for?”
He turned the corner and disappeared.
Frau Adelmann handed Joshua the medicine. “Why don’t you and Jakob go see if Wolfgang will take this? I’ll be right down here if you need me.”
Joshua smiled and nodded, taking the bag. “We will. Jakob, come on…let’s go.”
Jakob nodded and followed him in silence.
Dietrich had come in and helped Wolfgang…but why?
Sure, Dietrich had once been nicer…but recently…that wasn’t the case. He wouldn’t just get Wolfgang medicine for no reason.
Or was Jakob the one who was judging people based on only a few actions?
Joshua said there wasn’t enough room in Jakob’s heart for others if hatred was there.
Jakob dearly loved his brothers…and Angelina…but his hatred…it helped him some days.
But if there wasn’t enough room for both…something had to give.
