June 2, 2025 at 11:29 am #203687@ellette-giselle and anyone else
this is just for fun…takes place several years before Freedom’s Fire takes place…and ugh I love it so muchđđ«¶đ»đ
She ensured Wolfgang and Lee were close enough to get to in case there was an emergency, but not close enough to the creek to get wet.
Reuben tugged on her dress. âHelp?â
Eleanor kicked off her simple shoes. âJa, of course. ReadyâŠsetâŠgo!â She rushedâthough it wasnât much more than a quick strideâto the creek, quickly stepping into the cool water, clutching one of Reubenâs small two-year-old hands.
Reuben giggled and moved his feet in the water.
Laughter echoed as the boys pushed, shoved, and tussled in the water, Hans even joining in on their fun.
She released Reubenâs hand and crouched slightly, using her hands to splash water up at her husband.
Hans stepped out of the way with a chuckle. âNow whoâs the âresponsible adultâ?â
âBeing an adult means also being willing and ready to have fun,â she splashed more water, âand besides, you already got me wet with that bucket of water, so itâs only fair.â
He grinned. âI can get you drenched instead.â
She chuckled and stepped back. âYou wouldnât dare, Hans Theodore Baumann.â
She glanced over at Reuben, who had made his way over to his six-year-old brother Jakob and five-year-old stepbrother Adolphus, all splashing water at each other.
Before she could even blink, Hans wrapped his arms around her waist and back and held her down in the creek, keeping her face out of the water. He offered his signature, always somehow comforting grin and whispered, âThere we go: drenched.â
Eleanor tugged on his shirt, pulling him down.
They both tumbled into the water with a splash.
Eleanor quickly rose to her feet and laughed. âNow whoâs drenched?â
Hans scrambled to his feet, and she giggled, walking away.
He wrapped his arms around her and pulled her in for a firm but gentle kiss, releasing her just as Himmler and fourteen-year-old Fin MĂŒller tugged a reluctant Dietrich off the grass and into the water.
Arndt giggled. âDaddy, see if you can catch me and Joshua!â
Eleanor stepped aside and laughed as seven-year-olds Arndt and Joshua rushed away, followed by Hans, who had a slow but steady gain on the two.
Water splashed up into her face, and she took a step back. âAck! Johann Baumann!â
Her oldest laughed and rushed off, his cousin Leoâalso chucklingâtrailing behind him.
So many troublemaking boysâŠwhat was she going to do with them?
Eleanor smiled, clicked her tongue, and shook her head.
Oh, how she loved them dearly.
âWhat are you all doing?â
Eleanor turned and glanced up at her brother-in-law, who stood on the grass, arms at his side, worrying his bottom lip. She smiled. âPlaying in the creek. Are you here to pick up the boys?â
Felix slowly nodded, glancing at her, then the creek, then her again, then back to the creek and the others.
âYou wanna join?â
Felix shifted. ââŠI really should get the boys home, Hans.â
âItâs not that late,â Hans shrugged, âand youâre here earlier than expected. Why not have some fun?â
âI donât know, HansâŠâ
âFine, miss out,â Hans grinned at his older brother, âIâd bet you wouldnât be able to stand the creek water for too long anywaysâŠalways were a baby about doing something exciting.â
His brotherâs eyes narrowed. âIs that so?â
âJa,â Hans stepped up beside Eleanor, âalways were afraid to have a little fun, all because you knew I could take you on.â

June 5, 2025 at 11:49 am #203844*Bounces up and down because I just researched this* Make full summary of the mystery solution and the story behind it. Something like, “the old lady killed the doctor. She raised alligators in her home because she was a reptile researcher. She trained the alligators to do this, and this, and this. Her plan played out like this. She did it because her doctor told her to stop bungee-jumping and she hated him for it.” Then you break up all the information into little bitty pieces of information and make the protagonists work to find each piece. Literally make a list of which pieces they discover and in what order.
That doesn’t cover all the fun mystery elements like plot twists and red herrings. The twists and herrings make it feel like a mystery. But it helps to make up a list of information pieces for the protagonists to find, because then you have a coherent plot and all you have to do is work a little harder to make it unpredictable.
That’s what helps me, anyway, because I always feel like I don’t know what to do next.
I will make you lose The Game with me.
June 5, 2025 at 6:57 pm #203857@whalekeeper Thanks! That’s super helpful. I’m realizing that this is the kind of thing you need a really thorough outline for

June 6, 2025 at 10:02 pm #203886Today on unfiltered thoughts from Loopy that nobody asked for:
I made myself sad at work today because I was thinking about killing off characters and then I started thinking about how not writing your characters in the first place is kinda a form of killing them because they never got a chance to live in the first place and now I’m really sad but also weirdly motivated to get some writing done.

June 7, 2025 at 1:37 pm #203892Welcome back to unfiltered thoughts from Loopy! Today I have a question:
Is lava wet?

June 7, 2025 at 3:00 pm #203894June 7, 2025 at 7:15 pm #203895@loopylin I love those unfiltered thoughts lollll
As for the lava thing: I doubt it, the lava is too hot to have any water in it. If a person were able to withstand the heat and touch it, I think it’d feel more like liquidy metal or a smooth rock.
