Life/Writing Update, Request for Brainstorming Help, and maybe a scene snippet👀
Hiiii everyone!!! Y’all may have noticed that I’m not super active here on KP anymore😅 Truth is, life has been kinda hectic, and I’ve had a lot going on. In between school, family, church, book marketing, writing, reading, etc, there’s just been a LOT going on, but I’m grateful for all of it. I’m sick rn, but hey, that’s giving me time to pop in on here! 😂😂
Now, for a writing update: after receiving help from a few very special friends/beta readers (y’all are the best💜💜 you know who you are😜), I decided to work on one final (hopefully✨) proofread/edit for Book #2 of the Broken and Redeemed Trilogy. Along with that, I have also begun plotting out Book #3…and that brings me to the brainstorming help.
Book #3 begins in the US, before Leon/Riker return to Germany, and the book beginning in the USA is crucial bc not only does it show their normal lives, but it’s going to show how Leon/Riker haven’t dealt with the pain that remains from the war.
But I’m not sure exactly how to show that.
I know they’ll avoid things that will trigger each of their PTSD, but how is what I’m trying to figure out.
Leon tries to avoid thoughts about Aadelheide (but does wear a wedding ring), but otherwise?? I have no clue how Leon/Riker will avoid those things.
And when they return to Germany, they’re unable to avoid things that remind them of the war bc reminders are around them everywhere, another reason why Book #3 beginning in the US is so crucial.

and since I don’t share scenes much anymore bc I just don’t and aren’t super active, take a very small sneak peek into a bit of Book #3👀
Leon stepped aside as uniformed men shoved the door open, immediately searching the bed and all other places they could search, Riker held in between two of the men, his wrists shackled and his arms bound behind his back, blood on his nose and lip to stand as evidence of the fact that one of the men had clearly not taken kindly to him.
Leon could only hope that as soon as Riker had heard the men, he’d burned the pamphlets he had on hand, else risk Nikolai and the rest of the church’s endangerment.
A middle-aged man with a receding dark-brown hairline turned on his heel to face Leon as his men turned over everything within the room. “You are fugitives…liars…Americans.”
“If you are searching for something, sirs, I sincerely wonder what: I have nothing to hide, and neither does Riker.”
“Your friend had nothing in his room, Wagner, besides a single Bible,” the officer muttered in Russian-accented German, “but that does not mean—ah, a loose floorboard. Krupin.”
Riker had destroyed the pamphlets. But the men had also clearly taken hold of or else left Riker’s Bible—the Bible that had belonged to Riker’s mother until she died, way back during the war.
Leon met Riker’s gaze. Riker quickly glanced at the floor just as a youth-faced guard stepped forward, pulled at the old wood, and tore away a single floorboard. Pushing aside a simple blanket, the young man laid eyes upon the Bibles.
The officer grinned, faced Leon again, and nodded towards one of the men holding onto Riker. “Bind him as well: Kuznetsov will have much to say to these two Americans.”
Leon stepped forward and obediently set his arms behind his back. Fighting would do him no good, nor Riker, or anyone for that matter. The man finished binding Leon’s wrists and shoved Leon towards the man still holding onto Riker, who also gripped one of Leon’s forearms.
The young guard, Krupin, gathered the Bibles, handed the Bibles to another man, and stood. The officer in charge slowly nodded at the man holding onto Leon and Riker. “Good. Take them out to the truck along with Krupin: I and the other men will come shortly.”

AHHHHHH. I love the name Nikolai. Very nice. I might be more excited about the 3rd book than even the other two, although that would be kinda hard. *Stares hungrily at scene snippet*
As for life, yours is nuts too? It’s kinda reassuring to know I’m not the only KPer accidentally ghosting the kingdom. I don’t know if that makes sense, but it is.
Anyway, I hope things calm down for you (if you want them to) and that your words flow easily onto paper.

As for the PTSD triggers, if you could list all the triggers under the names of the two guys, i can help you try to brainstorm ways they would avoid them. At the moment, I’m not sure which triggers they would be. I mean, for some soldiers after war, the sight of blood would do it, for other guys the sound of a foreign language, or anything resembling gunshots, or harsh, angry shouting, or (often for POWs who ran into the gestapo,) anyone resembling an Aryan German. etc. etc.
It could be any number of things.
So, what are the triggers particular to them?

Yay! Leon and Riker working together! I love it!
As for triggers, Riker, I believe, would avoid guns and the sounds of gunshots. I have a neighbor with PTSD from serving and his wife asks us not to shoot anything more than air rifles or bows and other quiet things because the boom of a gunshot can trigger him. Maybe Riker could make a similar request of the people around him.
They may also want a night light. Idk

Ok, here are the triggers for the two (Riker’s stem from both the war and his childhood; Leon’s are just from the camp/war)
Leon
Shouting, Loud Sounds, popping noises, yelling, fights, tight spaces, gunshots, blood (not a tiny bit, but if there’s a lot, yeah…), sometimes dark places, prisons/barbed wire, whips (and prob other things the Nazis would’ve used in the camp)
Riker
Shouting, loud sounds, heavy/loud footsteps, alcohol, yelling, gunshots, tight spaces, the dark, being cornered, blood, bars, popping noises, being snuck up on, sometimes being touched
And….that’s all I got for now🤷🏻♀️ I think that’s a pretty solid list tho. Thank y’all for your brainstorming help! 😁
