I need help.
I’m trying to choose an ending for my novel. I thought I had it figured out, but now I’m doubting it. Either way, someone is going to die, so read at your own risk.
First, here’s the blurb:
A sheltered, naive, and eager young man.
A secluded, hardened, and secretive old man.
A conspiracy growing more powerful every day.
Rohan Amir al Roshan’s life was changed the day his parents disappeared. They had always been secretive about their work, but he trusted them… After a day without them, Amir finds a paper label, “For Emergencies” and with a man’s name and address on it. Now… if only he can convince the man to help him find his parents.
Arsyn Dabir al Arash lived a life of seclusion, a man of many secrets. But when a young man shows up at his front door asking for help to find his parents, Dabir immediately refuses. When the boy won’t leave, Dabir reluctantly agrees to train Amir and help him find his parents.
But as time goes by, this reveals itself to be more than just a case of kidnapping. Amir’s parents were involved in a much more dangerous secret than he could have ever imagined. And as they get closer to the truth, Dabir seems to become more and more distant. What’s going on? Who else has been keeping secrets from Amir? Amir is determined to find out the truth and save his parents, no matter the cost.
(The story has changed a little bit from the blurb, but nothing too drastic)
*spoilers ahead*
Ok, so my problem is how a certain character is going to die.
Amir.
My original idea was to have him die protecting Dabir.
But then I thought it’d be much more heart-wrenching to have Amir purposely die in Dabir’s place. (Analogy anyone?)
Because after the climax, during the denouement, I was thinking Dabir would be convicted of treason to his country. (Because of all the stuff he did in his past.) The sentence is death. So Amir takes his place because he wants Dabir to make things right with all the people he’s hurt. Amir’s reasoning is that he has no regrets or shame that he’ll carry to the grave; and even though some people have forgiven Dabir, he is still living with shame and regret because there are people out there that he’s never apologized to or made things right with.
*sigh* Either way, one of the sweetest characters I’ve ever created is going to die. I just can’t decide which way is better for my story. Because I’m not sure how the leaders of the country would react if this young man takes his punishment for him. I could always make that a part of the law. Like, someone is allowed to take the guilty party’s punishment. Everyone will just be shocked that Amir is doing it because he’s so young. (And there aren’t many people who would die in someone’s place). (Additionally, this idea was inspired by the Wingfeather Saga. If you know, you know.)
So yeah, that’s my predicament. I’d love to hear your opinions if you’re willing to share!

December 2, 2023 at 5:05 pm #167915This is really up to you. I like the idea of the giving himself up thing instead of just being in the way though. It would cause a lot of emotional drive for Dabir later on. Not only because Amir saved him, but because he willfully took it upon himself.
He is perfect in Justice, yet He is perfect in Mercy, even when we fail Him. For this, He is good.
December 2, 2023 at 5:20 pm #167916I do think that the “dying in place of” is a good idea. I think it’s more interesting for someone to give their life for someone else willingly, and not just in a protection way.
(basically, I agree with TheArcaneAxiom)

December 2, 2023 at 8:21 pm #167923I don’t have the time to fully reply, but I just want you to know that I read all your posts over the last few days on here, and I’m sorry about everything you’re going through ❤️ I felt legit anger for you over the school situation, and I can sympathize with the melancholy over the holidays. Wishing you a better Christmas break, Min.

December 2, 2023 at 8:29 pm #167924Tysm!! I really appreciate your reply <3
I can’t remember what part of the school situation I was talking about, but I asked my chem teacher and apparently she raises everyones grades and the end of the quarter, which imo is a weird way of doing it because I don’t know what grades I’ll have, but it looks like I can pass thankfully 🙂
Also because you’re online, what should I draw? I can’t think of anything rn lol

December 2, 2023 at 11:04 pm #167931NO NO NO NO NOOOOOOO! YOU CAN’T KILL AMIR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *sobs into my pillow for two hours*
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO *takes deep breath* OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Anyway……
I do like the idea that he’s dying in place of Dabir. I think your idea that it could be part of the law that anyone can willingly take the place of the criminal. So I think all in all it’s a really good story idea!!!!!!! JUST SO SAD <333
BUT WHAT WILL HEDIEH DO WITHOUT HIMMMMMMM?
I actually like this idea, regardless of how painful it is to know AMIR’S GOING TO DIE!!!!!! I think it is a really good message and theme! Also, it

LEFSE FOREVER!!!!!! <333December 3, 2023 at 8:08 am #167935That’s good! At least you can pass and not have the stress. I suck at chemistry 🙄
Hmm… you should draw your characters (or new ones!) in a short comic strip for the holidays. Like a Peanuts Christmas strip. I started one, but I forgot about it when I was gone this past week 😅

December 3, 2023 at 11:26 am #167974Auuggh, that’s going to be so sad! XD But it sounds like a good ending for the story and the character arcs, it’s just… 😭
Anyway, I think if that’s what feels right to you… then do it. It will definitely be more powerful and emotional if Amir dies in Dabir’s place, but personally I feel like a government that would allow that is pretty sad. But hey, there’s tons of dystopian governments more terrible than that xD So yeah, sorry, this was kind of just a ramble. If that will solve the story’s problem and leave everyone satisfied, go for it.

Thank you all for your replies!!
I think I’m leaning towards the taking the place of death more now. Thanks!!
And for those of you sobbing over Amir’s death….
Sorryyyyy 😭
It just has to happen. I know it’s gonna hurt writing it, but I also was planning Amir’s death from the very beginning. (Wow… the second half of that sentence sounds really bad out of context. XDXD)
BUT WHAT WILL HEDIEH DO WITHOUT HIMMMMMMM?
I don’t knowwww!!! I can’t remember if I told you or not, but she’s actually engaged to another man for a majority (maybe all) of the story. Amir looks at their relationship as a friendship. She does too, until she notices that Amir is really the one she loves. Because the only reason she’s marrying the other guy, is to please her parents. She thought she loved him, but notices that she was forcing herself into this. So before she knows that Amir is planning to take Dabir’s punishment, she tells him how she really feels. Amir is shocked and it makes him rethink his decision. But he goes through with it anyway. They have this really sweet conversation though and it’s so cute and sad and just 😭
Anyway… yeah, i don’t know what she’s gonna do. XD

December 3, 2023 at 2:52 pm #168009Hey girl, I was wondering if you could tell me how “good” you have to be at drawing/art to get into art school?
I’m not particularly good at drawing but I want to get better, and I was curious how much growth a school would allow before it’s too much work to actually succeed in time.

December 3, 2023 at 5:21 pm #168065@mineralizedwritings yeah it was lol
Where'd I get ya this time? The liver? The kidney? I'm runnin' outta places to put holes in ya.
December 3, 2023 at 7:36 pm #168126Oh, great question! I’m quite honored you think I’m the person to ask 😀
Well there’s a lot to consider… let’s see if I can keep this from being too long of a post lol…
I’d like to let you know beforehand not to stress out about any of this, because it might be a lot.
Art degree are often used for getting a job, but portfolios are very important, and almost anything you learn in art school can be learned with the internet. I’ve heard some say that art school is becoming less relevant, but many jobs still require a degree. Just know it looks like the options are opening up. However if you want a art related job in a typical organization, and hope to be promoted, you might want a 4 year degree. 2 year degrees and certifications are good but most times I think you need a 4 year to get promotions. They don’t want a 2-year over a 4-year, even if you’re more experienced most of the time.
Some art schools require a portfolio submission to get in, some don’t, sometimes it’s just based off your hs grades. Also, if you plan on getting a four year degree, the first two years will be prerecs (math english ect) and you can use that time to improve.
I’ve only taken one college level art class, but I can tell you about some of my assignments to help you get a feel for how hard it is. Keep in mind this is at a community college, not Uni so it was a little easier.
We had to paint color swatches and learn some color mixing, maxing the swatches we were given with primary colors, and getting a pretty close match. We had to make examples of the three types of symmetry, pretty much any drawing was accepted as long as it was neat, detailed, and was one of the symmetry types.
Some art degrees include animation and 3d modeling classes. I think those are some of the hardest, and you’d want to have a good understanding of form before starting otherwise you’ll just be swamped. There is a lot of art assigned in college level classes, so if you can draw well fast, you won’t be quite overworked. I think some of the early classes you might take would focus on composition and how dynamic your drawings are. For instance, creating a storyboard might be a assignment in beginner animating. I’m pretty sure you’re mostly graded on shot composition for this. If all your drawings are from the same angle, you’ll probably get a bad grade, so if you can learn to draw figures from multiple angles, that’s good.
Do you know what kind of a job you would like to end up in? The difficulty of classes is going to depend on what you take. If you want to be a UX (User experience, designing phone interfaces website stuff ect) you’ll need a lot less drawing skills than a 3d modeler.
I haven’t taken a lot of art classes, but I know relatively what you might be expected to do in some of them. Oh, and read professor reviews if you ever get to the point of signing up. Every professor is different, and will grade differently. Ik this sounds discouraging, but expect art for school to be work. In fact, I would design some different OC’s just for school projects, so your sweet Seb doesn’t remind you of schoolwork. Idk if you remember the comic (the color one) I posted awhile back, but that was a art 105 assignment. I made a sketch for almost every page beforehand, did the actual one, outlines it, colored some digitally and some by hand, scanned and printed it. It was a lot more work than I would have usually put into a home project. Although I’m proud of it, it has a different feeling than the other artwork I’ve created, because I did it half for fun and half for work.
I think almost anyone can improve a whole lot in art, but like you said it’s determining whether it’s worth it or not. There’s different types of art careers, and all need different classes to get there, I would say as a general rule though, you should go into classes knowing how to use references. I’m pretty sure you learn that in drawing 101, but honestly with the rapid pace of classes, I think you should know it prior.
I stress out about this stuff all the time, and although it’s made me improve, it also makes drawing less fun. Don’t worry about it too much, there’s lots of different types of art careers and you have plenty of more time. 🙂
If you have some more specific questions, I could probably be of better help! 🙂
