What made no sense was the tined things that were laid out beside them. He picked one up. It was silver and weighed heavily in his hand. He poked experimentally at the cloth folded beneath the horde of silverware. The utensil left tiny holes in the fabric where each tine distorted the weave.

A water drop slid down his forehead. He brushed it away with a lock of wet hair that tried to stick to his face.
He’d woken with a racing heart that had taken an hour clinging to the bareback of a galloping horse to calm.Then there’d been a cold swim in the river…
Ari combed his fingers through his thick hair, annoyed. It would be smooth, tamed, no matter how he’d cut it. He should have toweled it dry when he’d changed.
Whatever. His stomach cramped as he stepped into the dining hall. Pastries and sugared fruits were being laid out on the table. Ari spared the sweet meats an wary glance before finding a cup of black coffee.

Wilhelm didn’t answer, so Wolfgang did the next natural thing which was to open the door and spring into the room. The boy was nowhere in sight, and after a quick search and a few shouts, he came to the conclusion that Wilhelm was gone. Wolfgang stood perfectly still for nearly twenty seconds as he attempted to put the pieces of this puzzle together. His train of thought was broken by the smell of something hot and good. Wilhelm was completely forgotten, and the next moment Wolfgang was flying toward the stairs. He swung onto the banister and slid down, coming to the bottom with a loud bang. “I love bangs!” he exclaimed under his breath. He took a moment to orient himself, then shot into the dining room. A quick glance showed him a long table and breakfast! He also spotted Wilhlem. “Oh Hallo!” He cried, zipping around the table and throwing himself into a chair next to the boy. “I was looking for you.”

Wilhelm flinched. The server setting a tray of sweet rolls on the table almost turned over a tray of curdled milk and fruit. Wilhelm steadied the tray with desperate speed.
There was something familiar about that bang.
The doors flew open.
“Oh Hallo!” A golden haired princeling dropped into the chair between Wilhelm and a recent newcomer. Wolfgang. “I was looking for you.”
“Oh.” Wilhelm’s laugh rattled a bit. “Good morning, then. Have you broken your fast yet?”
The boy opposite Wolfgang studied them both with a look as black as the drink he sipped periodically. Wilhelm nodded to him before directing his attention back to his friend.

He smothered a flinch as the wirl of chaotic yellow hair practically threw itself in the chair beside him. The Veren youth turned his gaze on the boy beside him for a moment, then turned back to his coffee.
Noise. Loud, intrusive, unconcious, noise. Ari looked down at the plain flatbread and fish on the too fine plate before him. His stomach still snarled, but he was pacing himself.
How was Moth this morning? Casting about the hall didn’t come up with the fairy boy. Ari took another slow sip of coffee and tried to ignore the bubbling voice beside him.
You could move, Verenion. Find somewhere quiet. Or you could remove the noise maker…
But seats were filling up. If he wanted to keep the space beside him, he ought to stay here and glower.
