Ellis’s shot went wide. Ari waiting for him to start knock and draw again, then gently nudged his arm into a better position.
“Look down the shaft at the target. That will help.” He watched as Ellis’s arrow clipped the top of the coiled straw target. “Aim takes practice. Archery is a skill of the whole body, especially in battle or hunting. You are doing fine.”
“You are doing fine, Froilán.” Golden brown hair slipped through his fingers. Fabric rasped against his shoulder, damp from little-boy tears. “They don’t know anything.”
He stuffed the memory back into its velvet lining. Odd that it should come up now. He’d been around these two younger boys a little much.

It seemed best to take note of when Ari grew dark. Once again, he did not care to say much about himself, but some of his short, clipped exclamations did not seem to come from a place of peace. Passion — and something like anguish — shone out of him in short bursts, like sunlight half blocked by a hand.
Moth would understand the older boy in time. With time, anything was possible.
He listened. Then he spoke in a small voice to both of the others. “I should expect angel food cake at my door tonight, then?”

Ellis laughed and lowered his bow. He had nearly forgotten who he was with. “You don’t want to try my baking. And I have no need to fear you stealing all my left shoes while I’m sleeping or luring me away to fairy land.” His smile faded a little and he blinked a couple times at Moth. “…Do I?”

Fairy land? A strange turn of phrase, as if there was a definite destination, as if world’s didn’t simply overlap. Moons and wind and monstrous slimy creatures came to mind. His lips twitched.
In a placid voice he he addressed the arrow head in his hand.
“I don’t suppose fairies are so particular about who bakes the offering. I wouldn’t be.” He kept his gaze turned to the far end of the range to hide the gleam in his eyes. “But them, I haven’t much experience with fairies. Or humans either, come to think of it.”

Moth was probably teasing, Ellis was sure, but it still felt uncomfortable. His smile was slightly less bright than before. “Maybe we will all go to the kitchens and get cake together sometime.”
He wanted to return to focusing on his archery, but something about what his teacher had said was bothering him. “Are you not human yourself, Ari?”
