It’s really bad…
At dinner, Mandin’s back was flawlessly straight, shoulders stiff and wide. Not a single break in the most formal of dinner manners and protocols could be nitpicked as he sat next to his father, across from Nahim.
Nahim was quiet, also sitting with flawless form, but next to him, Lord Adorian was laughing, shoulders relaxed and shaking. He was holding his knife in the wrong hand, and he had a piece of sauce that had not quite made it into his mouth as he laughed.
Once he had calmed down, Nahim picked up a napkin.
“Lord, allow—”
Lord Adorian cut him off. “My dear Nahim, how many times do I have to tell you that I am capable of performing most my tasks, but thank you.” He took the napkin, wiping his mouth (with proper etiquette) watching Nahim as he did so with a fond expression.
Mandin’s gecko brown eyes watched with envy. Lord Adorian wasn’t even Nahim’s father, yet the lord treated him gently, watching him with sparks of fatherly kindness in his bright blue eyes. Master Milcah would never consider such a thing for Mandin, so he thought.Confuzzled, RAE
