Ok, I actually didn’t know that it would be different characters, but it makes sense. Sanderson likes exploring the different eras.
He is perfect in Justice, yet He is perfect in Mercy, even when we fail Him. For this, He is good.
October 19, 2023 at 9:37 pm #159549It will be characters that we’ve met though. I could tell you who if you want, although two would be a little bit of a spoiler. (The main characters of 1-5 might be still around too if they survive.)He made a disclaimer saying that just because a character gets the flashbacks of one of the books doesn’t mean they survive until it.

📚 Appreciator of BooksOctober 19, 2023 at 11:20 pm #159560You might not care, but I try to maintain a fairly equal ratio of male MCs to female MCs in a book. This shouldn’t be the deciding factor, but consider that adding Liv as a MC would give you a 2 to 4 ratio (double the amount of female characters to male), whereas you currently have as even a ratio as possible with 2 to 3.
Obviously, you might not care and it shouldn’t matter too much, but I thought I’d mention it.
I try to do that as well. I do have more male characters that are side characters though, so that may even it out a bit. think I’ll only show Liv’s POV every now and then, because I don’t want her to be just a side character but I’m not sure if she has a big enough role for a MC yet.
Btw, are the characters you consider the main ones Sef, Lilitu, Neveah, Ottoline, and Marcurious?
Yep!
It’s so hard to just pick one main character out of the set of five, though! I love all them equally!!! XD
This is funny, to me it feels like they’re my best friends and if I choose one over the other they’ll get mad at me and refuse to talk to me…AKA writer’s block. (Am I going crazy?)

That’s fair. I think you can make it work as well, it is harder for smaller stories though, but not impossible.

That is the way of writers🤣 Your characters feel real to you. Frank Herbert’s son felt like he had to compete with his father’s characters for love and attention, so it is a very real thing that influences our world. (Sorry if I just made that a little depressing at the end, his son happily continues his father’s legacy now in expanding the universe of Dune.)

You could pick more than one. One thing to think about is that if there are characters that spend most of their time in a group, you could have one of those be a less frequent POV than the other.

📚 Appreciator of BooksOctober 20, 2023 at 9:29 am #159568What might help is to remember that you don’t have to choose them because you like them better. You should choose the ones that have the most interesting POV and character development.
Personally, I would say that the best three to pick would be Ottoline, Marcurious, and either Lilitu or Sef. And then the other two characters could still be major characters, but you would just focus on them less than the other three. They’d be in the same group as at least one main character, so you would still get plenty of opportunity to develop them, just less time from their POV and probably less total development.

Glad I’m not the only one, lol

Yeah I know…but still, they’re all interesting in their own way XD I agree, Ottoline Marcurious and Sef would probably be the best main MC’s.

LEFSE FOREVER!!!!!! <333October 21, 2023 at 10:45 am #159743Do you still want some help with the UNIT’s name?
If you want to go with an acronym, I think the first step should be to brainstorm words starting with U, N, I, or T that relate to what the UNIT is. (I think using the word ‘terminal’ would be cool for the ‘T.’)
If you want to go with a non-acronym, then we need to think about how what the UNIT is and how it relates to the word ‘unit.’
A unit is either “an individual thing or person regarded as single and complete but which can also form an individual component of a larger or more complex whole” or “a device that has a specified function, especially one forming part of a complex mechanism.” The first definition probably works better.
So, in what way is the UNIT “an individual thing or person regarded as single and complete” and/or in what way does it “form an individual component of a larger of more complex whole”?
I think you implied that the UNIT is part of a larger prison where they carry out experiments? In that case, maybe the prison could be split into several units and you could call this one the ‘Experimental Unit’ or something like that.

Okay, I like that. Maybe I could call it the EP instead of the UNIT for short? (I know, so creative…not.)

LEFSE FOREVER!!!!!! <333October 21, 2023 at 2:39 pm #159794What would the P in EP? Stand for? You might still be able to call it the Unit, even if there are multiple units, because the prisoners would fear it the most, so they might call it that even if there are technically multiple.

📚 Appreciator of BooksOctober 21, 2023 at 2:40 pm #159795So in my WIP, Liv has a horse named Xandro. I was thinking that all the races have horses that are intelligent and match the “color scheme” and have the same powers. For example: Liv in an Aquino, she has blue hair, eyes, skin, clothes, and has the power to manipulate water. Xandro has a blue coat, eyes, hooves, mane and tail and has a special bond with Liv.
So is it too cliche to have the horses be able to telepathically communicate with their owners? Or should I go ahead? As of now, the horses can understand situations, have feelings, and understand lanugages, but can’t speak, however they can communicate with other horses.

LEFSE FOREVER!!!!!! <333October 21, 2023 at 2:46 pm #159797I might just keep it the UNIT, then.
You keep asking, though, why it is the “unit” and how is it the definition of the word. I tend to be lazy and not overthink it. Correct me if I’m wrong but does it really matter why it’s called that? If so, why does it matter? (sorry if I sound like a brat rn, I’m just kind of confused.) It is just a “unit” so to speak of the prison. I’m not sure how (or why) I would ever include why it’s called that in my book. I think the name causes a sense of curiosity in the readers to find out what it is and why it is so important.
Sorry, those were just nagging questions in my head, lol.

LEFSE FOREVER!!!!!! <333October 21, 2023 at 2:51 pm #159798I don’t think it’s too common to have talking horses. Highly intelligent horses are pretty common, but they don’t always talk. I think the idea could work, but I think it would be a bit odd to have one variety of horse for each race. Maybe just one type?
EU does stand for European Union in real life, so that might be weird. You could do EXU. Some acronyms have multiple letters per word, like DNA which stands for deoxyribonic acid (or something like that.) EXU looks cooler than EU anyway.
