Or combine option A and option B so some characters die, some are permanently wounded, but they did it for a good trade, and so ultimately accept it as a win-win. I love inflicted-and-permanent disability, it’s such a useful trope. (Plus it adds some much-needed disability rep.)

April 11, 2025 at 10:23 am #201531Yeah. I have an even split of disabilities caused during the stories and before. So many of them have to do with mobility. And then I realized, ‘oh duh, I’m just writing what I know.’ XD

April 11, 2025 at 10:41 am #201533@whalekeeper that’s cool. Since I usually write fanfics, I like to connect it back to something that’s already happened. If a character was, say, shot in the leg once canonically, I might have issues with that come back later (his leg might be stiffer, he might walk with a limp, maybe he even needs a prosthetic because the wound got worse.)
Or I’ll take something important to the character from them. (Like Toothless’s tail fin.) I haven’t decided on it yet, but Sniper might end up losing his shooting arm, or at least the ability to move it, in one of the sequels of the story in which he first appears.
It means getting rid of his awesome scaly-wrist-birthmark-thing if I do in fact go the chopping it off route, but at least he gets a decent robotic replacement cause the facility he’s currently sorta imprisoned in needs him to have both arms functioning. Although they probably should’ve thought of that before they let him get shot by a turret and ignored that he was injured for a while.

You just triggered my repressed obsession for HTTYD and I’m not complaining. The Vikings are many things, but they are not ableist, and it’s so well done. 😂

April 11, 2025 at 11:50 am #201564@whalekeeper HTTYD is PEAK FICTION and you can’t tell me otherwise.
I do love how well done the disability stuff is. Like, it’s important to the story, but it’s not the whole thing. Hiccup and Toothless have personalities besides their respective injuries. Although it makes for some funny moments:
Tuffnut: Hiccy! A moment? Listen, I’ve been watching you walk. Lose the limp. No one’s gonna marry that.
Hiccup: I have a prosthetic leg!
Gobber: So have I!
Tuffnut: And I have parasitic twin, but you don’t see me limping around about it!

Ohhh man I loved that one too. The visuals were so beautiful. And while I’ve heard tons of complaints about how Toothless and Hiccup separated and whether that plot was done right, I think it works, and tells the story beautifully.
