Lucille
“I’m Lucille Dali. I came from…” Lucy sat up, sighing when there was nothing but plain mist-dusted hedges around her. “I was pulled. Sorta fell sideways.”
The shock still shook in her bones. The wall, when it collapsed, must have turned into a kind of portal, like what astronomy magazines taught about the death of stars. The crawlspace had spat her out, Gabriel was gone, and now she was more lost than ever.
She gave Mel a quick glance, hugged her knees to her chest, and found herself studiously watching the ducks.
…

“Oh. Yeah, that happens sometimes. I didn’t get pulled this time. I had a door.”
Mel sat down next to the girl, unsure of what else to say. Lucille seemed angry. Or sad. Or something that wasn’t happy. The two watched the ducks together in silence. The ducks began to spread back out in the pond, no longer intimidated by the new human. They splashed and dove and flapped around in the water, all while quaking quietly to each other. Mel liked the ones with the green heads best. She giggled as she watched a couple ducks take turns bobbing their heads up and down, dipping their beaks in the water and flicking droplets at each other. She pointed them out to Lucille, hoping she might stop being sad.

Lucy smiled. The smile vanished as quickly as it had come. She took in a sharp double breath, almost sobbing, and wiped her face with her sleeve. “Did you know you can tell the difference between a city duck and a country duck ‘cause they… they have accents?”

Mel
“No, I didn’t.”
Whenever Mel looked at her companion’s face, tears threatened to spring up in her eyes, which confused her, since she felt just fine. She looked away instead. “What do city ducks sound like?”⭐️World's Slowest Writer⭐️

“I can try making it but I’m better at dove noises. City ducks make rough noises and they’re always tryin’ to talk over each other, so they get loud. L-Listen.”
Lucy pointed at one of the ducks. When it quacked, she made a similar sound, but scratchier and sharper. She was instantly aware of how weird she seemed, but tried to play it cool. “Hear the difference?”

Mel nodded. She tried to make the sound herself, but still sounded very much like a little girl. The ducks were not fooled. She giggled again. “Now they think we’re fancy city birds.”

January 22, 2026 at 10:28 pm #210211Yep! Ducks have regional accents. And Lu would know that, so here we are. XD

Lucy snorted. “I’m a country bird, not a city bird. These aren’t very discerning ducks.”
After another long pause, and after she felt confident enough to meet the younger girl in the eye, Lucy got up. She wiped her nose again and began spinning slowly in place to see everywhere. “Have y’seen a fellow, sort of physically lofty, with a mask?”

“No… I saw a lady with a mask. But that was a while ago. Why?”

“We were looking for a way out of the maze. He was helping me and – hm, well, maybe I wasn’t helping him any. I don’t know where I am now.”
The hedges grew in the typical labyrinthian fashion, but Lucy knew better than to think Gabriel was nearby. The plants themselves were different – the moss more emerald and the leaves less spear-shaped. And Gabriel surely would be calling out for her.
Lucy racked her brain for any direction to take. Before, at the amphitheater, she had seen a hill to the southeast. They had agreed to go in that direction before the crow attack. Gabriel probably didn’t remember, and it was possible Lucy was past the hill and shouldn’t go farther southeast. But it was an idea.
“I have to look for him,” Lucy said slowly. She walked up to the nearest wall and began climbing.

Maybe…XD
I know who I’d add if I did. Or maybe the narrator from that book would be better…
