Lucille
Gabriel was in many ways a stranger. He came from someplace else, his life was entirely different, and it was impossible to predict his thoughts. But he had fought a monstrous dog and birds, run through thorns, and never once complained or left Lucy for good.
Lucy glanced at the letterbox once more. She imagined in a way she often told herself to do – imagined how deep and wide Gabriel’s life was; imagined what little intricate details sprinkled the corners of his mind.
She stood up, her mouth a thin line. “That’s not fair.”
She looked away so he couldn’t see her face. It took effort, but she turned her back to her door and walked off to inspect the other doors.

Bittersweetness filled Gabriel. He could see the conflict in her movements, and while he wished her to stay, he also knew that she needed to go home. She didn’t belong in this cursed place.
“Lucy, I don’t matter. Fairness is a luxury, I am a peasant. But you…you need to go home. If that door leads home, you need to take it. I’ll find my own way home.”

“I… might know what a peasant is, and that’s me too.” She waved her hand over a door to make a peephole appear and looked inside. “There’s nothin to make me matter more… except being young. We’re equals, hm? Can’t use the whole key; you’re s’posed to benefit from half.”
Before Gabriel could interject, Lucy pointedly dropped to the floor. She lay on her side, her cheek against the marble. It was freezing. She scooted closer to the door until the gray light underneath was better visible.
Small rolls of mist poured over the floor, and they only showed up on the black tiles, disappearing an inch away from the doorframe. It was like watching tiny water rivulets over tiny stones.
Lucy rolled over onto her back, her jacket winging over marble. “Look.”

December 13, 2025 at 1:56 pm #209118Man I can’t rp cause all I have is a phone and typing long roleplays on KP with a phone is SO HARD compared to my iPad or my computer.
but I’d love for my characters to find the 100 Cupboards Room lol, maybe I’ll do that when I’m able to access my computer on Monday
"When in doubt, eat cheese crackers."-me to my charries who don't even know about cheese crackers
December 13, 2025 at 5:00 pm #209120The room has been christened the ‘100 Cupboards room’ I see. ?

I can imagine that. My dad hates using his phone to type out stuff. I find my phone easier to work with, though. I think it’s because paragraphs are more columned so they fit on the screen, and I process them better that way.

Hmm I’m not sure how that’ll pan out if Gabriel and Lucy are currently exiting it. I thought the groups will run into each other after, and in that case your group would learn not to go in. Or maybe that won’t happen and maybe you’ll have a different plan.
Fyi, @rae and Keilah, I’ve been picturing this “house” as something that is magically throughout the labyrinth and doesn’t take up any physical space unless you’re inside it. L&G (as I’ll call them) only entered a singular tower’s trapdoor and ended up in a giant multiroomed realm. The exit might be on the other side of the map for all they know.
I just realized that might not be a commonly imagined thing. ? Is that what y’all picture? Or maybe you’re picturing something more visible from the hedge maze itself?

Gabriel looked down at her. “You really shouldn’t breath in mysterious mists that are down low like that. Many poisonous mists are heavier than air.” She appeared fine, so Gabriel decided not to freak out. “What is it you want me to look at?”

Lucy came to a kneeling position and slipped the key in the lock.
The door creaked open, and mist cascaded over the tiles. The green carpet Lucy had seen through the crack was moss, and sharp gray light poured over their faces. Lucy shivered and shoved her hands in her pockets.
There it was – the labyrinth again. A wall lay ahead and bugs chirped lazily in the cold earthy air.

“Lucy! You should have used the key to go home!” Gabriel dug his fingertips into his hair, before sighing, composing himself, and putting his mask back on. “Let’s go.”

The key turned into bright green dust in Lucy’s hand, falling from the lock like sand from broken glass.
Despite her choice, she glanced back at her home door. One part of her wanted to sit beside it for hours. But that didn’t matter now, since she couldn’t get in and seeing her parents might make things worse.
She clenched the fabric of her jacket pockets, wringing them until her nails hurt. But she followed Gabriel without a word.

December 13, 2025 at 10:57 pm #209136Lol, yes.
Gabriel Mai
The foggy labyrinth stretched on before them. Gabriel’s hearing had returned, and now be could hear footsteps somewhere along one of the many passages. They were too far away for Gabriel to be able to distinguish man from beast. He kept his hand on the hilt of his knife, eyes scanning the walls of the maze. When the silence between Lucy and himself stretched too long, he spoke.
“I’m not angry at you for choosing to stay, though the choice was illogical and rash. To be honest, I’d be very lonely if you had left. But that still doesn’t mean you should have stayed.” He sighed. He felt like his mentor, both heartwarmed and caring while scolding to an extent.

“Because this place is dangerous, and no place for a child. You should be at home, eating cookies or something by a fire. Children should be protected above others, because they’re the future, and the most vulnerable. That’s why.”
They rounded a corner of the maze, opening up into a circular area, about thirty feet in diameter. A knurly tree grew along part of the wall, with leaves tipped in red and yellow as if the seasons were turning to fall. The roots, after years of groping for a way to the earth, had grown down between the cracks of the old stone that tiled the area.
“Hand me your hatchet. This seems good enough a place to teach you how to protect yourself.”

Lucy handed him the hatchet. She also rolled up her sleeves so they wouldn’t get in the way. “Are we gonna chop wood?”

“I can teach you that as well, but I want to teach you how to throw an axe first. It could come in handy in this labyrinth.” Gabriel removed the cover and checked the hatchet over, then took a few steps closer to the tree, until about 12 feet away. “I think it’ll throw good from this distance. Any farther and it might over rotate, any closer and you’ll have the opposite. Grip the axe handle loosely, not to tight, resting your thumbs on the shaft like this,” He demonstrated. “When you throw, keep your hands loose, just enough to grip. Raise the hatchet over your head and throw straight.” Gabriel tossed the hatchet, imbedding it in the tree.
He walked over and pulled it out, coming back to Lucy and handing it to her. “One more thing, do not flick your wrists. You could hurt yourself. Just throw straight.”
