The Protector — Gabriel Mai
Gabriel spun around, dropping a knee into the soft moss. “Lucy? What’s wrong?” For a flickering second, the rune over his left eye made her look like Barnes, but he blinked, and it was just Lucy again.

Lucy clutched her short blonde hair and panted. She sat as still as she could, not speaking, until she had to respond. “My head. I-It feels real bad.”

November 26, 2025 at 10:24 pm #208581I remember seeing Gabriel’s mask in some art with symbols on it. Are those visible to the normal eye, or just Gabriel?

November 26, 2025 at 10:30 pm #208584Aaah, yes! That was what I remembered. In contrast Barnes’ mask has nothing on it. I bet you’ve got substantial lore for each symbol.

Gabriel dug through his pockets. He had a two tiny vials, one for poison and the other for disinfecting wounds. Neither would help. The only thing else were his earrings that he had put away, and a wrapped honeybun, cold and a little sticky. Gabriel faintly smiled, but then it faded as he realized he had nothing to help Lucy, unless she was hungry. He looked back up at her, silent, unsure if he should be honest, or tell her a half-truth to comfort her.

Lucy took off her jacket, eyes watering. She shoved it over her face and yelled, her voice muffled. Next to her, Gabriel must have moved closer, but she ignored him and continued panting until the pain abated. The headache turned into a soft throb, low in her temples.
She put the jacket back on, got up, and wiped her nose. “I’m fine.”

Gabriel shook his head slightly. “Are you sure? Is the pain gone?” He watched her every movement, like an overprotective mother. He didn’t quite believe her.

“I’m fine,” Lucy said louder. “Where are we going, mister Fifth Protector?”

Gabriel sighed, standing up. “We’re looking for a crystal ball. It’ll send you home.” He walked behind her now, watching over her, still worried.

The walk turned into a juxtaposition – uneasy, because of their strange surroundings, and peaceful, because they had already survived a sudden fright. The Protector walked without a word. Lucy tightened her fist now and then, gazing at each object in the leaves. Her gaze flickered along the wet path and up to the hazy sky.
Lucy knew what mazes were like, both in newspapers and in the fields, but this was something of great size. The place was a giant hedge garden, with a deep senseless personality that crept through the ground and rose into the mist.
The mist ran up her spine, and she brushed the back of her neck now and then.

Gabriel Mai — The Protector
Gabriel felt exhaustion creeping in on his body, blurring his vision as he realized that he hadn’t slept since entering the maze, and even before that he hadn’t slept much. But it wasn’t safe to sleep in the maze without someone to keep watch, and he would rather pass out from exhaustion before he had Lucy stay awake while he rested. He shook himself, attempting to banish his tiredness.
He deeply inhaled, then stiffened, and stepped in front of Lucy, drawing his blades. “Can you hear that? And smell it?” He whispered. “It sounds much heavier than us, and it smells faintly of rot. Stay behind me.” His eyes watched a corner in the maze, feet sliding into a stance, like a rattlesnake curling up to strike, from which he could attack in a blur.
