That was all. She followed the Protector around a corner. “I suppose you can tell me how I got here?”

“I’m afraid I can’t. The rest of us, to my knowledge, appeared at the entrance of this cursed place, where a haggard nymph sits, yet you simply dropped from inside a wall onto the ground. You’re wearing the clothes of someone who I briefly knew, yet you don’t know her. And I am sure I saw Barnes instead of you in her clothes when I picked you up, but it couldn’t have been her. You can’t be her. I wonder if I’m going mad, the only senses of mine that seem reliable right now are touch and scent. I would rather fight a hundred direwolves than be in this place.”

As she often did, Lucy felt an energy like anger, except she did not hate anyone. It was more like her brain was crushed by itself as it tried to understand. She clenched her fists and said nothing.

Gabriel glanced back at her, noticing her anger, but didn’t comment, still walking forward in silence besides the noises of the maze and the pat pat of feet on moss.
He shattered it after a few minutes, hoping to distract her from whatever had angered her. “I used to live in a wooden cabin in a forest. It was surrounded by brambles, with sharp thorns, but it had the most beautiful and potent blossoms. They were white, but the edges of their delicate petals were dipped in the pink of sunset clouds. Are you a fan of flowers?”

She stopped. Sound warped as she lost her balance and sat on a clump of moss. For a moment, she almost cried out, eyes watering. It felt like a dull needle was shoved into her head.
