The rune over Gabriel’s eye on his mask does have strange sight properties, so that works!
Something told me he has magical intuition :]
Lucille
The man spoke. Lucy’s heart dropped. The voice belonged to a stranger.
For a long time, she didn’t say anything, even though the man’s voice was urgent. Fury temporarily warmed her body. Her heart hammered in her ribs and she curled her hands into fists.
Someone had done something wrong. Someone must have kidnapped her. Maybe they took her because her family were wardens.
It took all the willpower in her not to jolt upright and crack the man’s chin. She held her fists in a defensive place over her chest. After a stiff silence, perfectly still in his arms, she answered his question. “I’m Lucy.”

lol, I’d like to see that.
The Protector — Gabriel Mai
“Lucy…What a strange name. It sounds like the name of some yellow flower.”
A vine shifted, and Gabriel tensed, glaring at it behind his mask. His ear twitched, picking up those strange voices again. His earrings glinted silver in the fog still, and a cold wind blew his unevenly cut hair.
“Do you know where Barnes is? Why are you wearing her clothes?”
About the voices, that’s the maze messing with Gabriel. I shall develop it later on.

Glad you like her! I love Lu from the beginning to the end of her timeline. Even if a nine-year-old isn’t a super complicated character lol

It might happen anyway

Lucy wiped her nose and crossed her arms again. “I d… hm, don’t know who that is. Barn. A barn?”
All around her, the foliage was dark and unfamiliar. None of it looked like home. She began to pant, a sense of dread building.

Gabriel watched the child, puzzled. How could she be wearing the same clothes as Barnes, yet not know her? The clothes even smelled the same to him. And how had she looked like an older woman earlier to him. His head throbbed with questions, but he was pulled from his thoughts when he felt Lucy’s breathing changing against him.
“Don’t panic, there are monsters, and everything here seems to move, but I’ll find one of those crystals to send you home.”
It was the only thing he could think to say, his voice still calm and much deeper than his natural one. He felt like the ribbon of his mask was loose, but still held to Lucy, not willing to let her go, deep-down afraid the maze would whisk her away in a poof of smoke or some other strange, unexplainable way.
He really doesn’t know how to comfort children.

He sounded exactly like the far field workers who were sent to asylums.
“You’re crazy,” Lucy whispered.
She turned inward, so her knees pressed against his chest, and kicked hard. The man grunted and loosened his grip, just enough for Lucy to roll out and onto the ground.
Air burst from her lungs and she gasped for breath. The ground was speckled with moss patches, soaking her clothes with dew. The cold still dulled her arms and legs, weighing her down, but she managed to get up.
“They’re gonna put out a s-search… warrant,” she coughed. “And I’ll be alive to testify!”
She ran headfirst for the nearest climbable wall.

The Protector — Gabriel Mai
At the kick, Gabriel’s loosened mask slipped down to around his neck, hanging by its scarlet ribbon. He immediately turned the left side of his face away, and the strange voices that had haunted him grew louder. He could almost form their words through their gargled screeching. He tried to pull his mask back up, when he saw Lucy running for the wall.
“No! Don’t try to climb it!” In his panic, his voice slipped out as his natural one, young and oddly emotional compared to his fake voice. He drew his blades, forgetting his mask, watching the vines shift, moving like a snakes when they’re about to catch their prey. The tendrils dashed out towards Lucy, ready to take their prey into the green coils.
Gabriel grabbed her by the waist, pulling her back and tossing her to the ground behind him, his movements fast, but not gentle. “Search your pockets. Barnes seemed like a practical woman, she might have something to start a fire. Cutting these vines doesn’t work.” His voice was back to it’s previous deep rumbling, as he placed himself between Lucy and the vines, his mask dangling about his neck, thumping on his chin.
The screeches grew slightly louder, still dampened as if in water.

Hehe, that’s got a good ring to it

Gotcha. Last art I saw was with a mask so I didn’t get a proper look. Nice art, by the way!
I will reply in an hour or so btw. My family’s on a LotR marathon and I’m quite overstimulated by the action scenes, so even sitting apart from it for an hour does not clear my mind.

Lucy choked down a sound. The gray tendrils wandered towards her, bewitching as colorless fields in the morning, but with more life than those.
Thoughts returned in a rush. Hadn’t the nameless man pulled her away? He stood between her and the writhing wall.
In the next instant, she made up her mind. She emptied her pockets and scrambled to not drop anything. The Barn person probably wouldn’t like it if Lucy lost the wallet, but otherwise everything looked like fair game.
Lucy dumped the cigarettes into the handkerchief, holding it like a loose bag. She flipped the lighter and held the handkerchief over it. The fabric smoldered and lit up.
As soon as she was sure of the fire, Lucy wound up and threw the bundle with all her might.
It landed under the plant mass, lighting the underbrush. Smoke curled into the air.

lol. We just recently watched them with my little brother who knows the books but never watched the movies. Half the time, it was my big brother, my dad and I criticizing tiny incorrect details or praising the designs of the ents XD.
Gabriel Mai — The Protector
A tendril curled around Gabriel’s ankle, digging thorns into his flesh. His natural instinct was to cut it, but he knew it would only grow back with two, like that hydra that had almost killed him years ago with its venomous fangs. He left it alone, hoping that Barnes had left something useful in Lucy’s pockets. His heart soared as he smelled something burning behind him. In the corner of his vision, he saw a flash of fire, a burning piece of cloth landing in the maze’s cursed brush. The vine around his ankle released and writhed in agony, before it shriveled and lay still.
The blaze was traveling along the maze wall now, feeding upon the vines, sending smoke into the air that bothered Gabriel’s sensitive nose. Before it could spread too far, Gabriel cut the brush in the fire’s path, scraping the moss, even though it was still damp, from the base of the wall, and a few vines which he promptly warded off with a torch made from a dead piece of vine. Once he was content that the fire couldn’t spread farther along the wall and get out of control, he turned back to Lucy.
“Are you okay?” As he looked back at her, those voices that had been barely audible, screeched. Their voices made his ears ring, they sounded as if they were now standing next to him, as if their lips were pressed to his ear, screaming into his very eardrums. He hissed, covering his ears. Doing so reminded him that his mask still hung about his neck, and that he was fully-facing Lucy. He turned away, taking his hands off his ears long enough to put his mask back on, chest heaving in panic. As the mask covered his face, the screeching died down to that same unintelligible whispering underwater. Gabriel shook himself. “I’m sorry.” His voice was natural again, and quiet.

Lucy leaned forward to study the blaze, rubbing her knuckles against her legs. The charred, moist wall peeled in layers like an old flower bulb. Black, it was already smitten again with dew, and conflicting to look at. The smoke stung her eyes, sweet and bitter.
She took a breath with her sleeve in her face and gagged. She’d have to wear her clothes for who knew how long, and no amount of willpower could ignore the smell.
“Are you okay?” The man’s eyes were concerned.
He took a step, then recoiled and clutched his ears. Like an animal snapping its foot in a trap, he contorted with pain, and slipped his mask back on as quickly as he could. He looked just as sick as a far fields worker. But he did a good thing, and he had a kind face. “I’m sorry.”
What was he ashamed for? Lucy approached him slowly, tripping on her oversized jacket. She came up, close enough to twist her head and study his mask’s brow, and patted his elbow. “…You feel alright then, eh?”

Gabriel flinched as she touched him at first, then relaxed as she spoke, shoulders dropping a little.
“Yeah.” Gabriel didn’t even attempt to deepen his voice, sounding more like his true age. “We should get out of here, that fire might have attracted some of the monsters of this labyrinth, and the smoke has temporarily dulled my nose, and I have little trust in my hearing at the moment.” He looked down at Lucy, taking out the earrings in his ears and slipping them into his pocket. He then bent down, taking up a piece of vine that still smoldered at the end with a bit of flame like a torch, to ward off any more vines. “Stay close, the walls of this place seem living like the vines. That’s how Barnes got separated, and how you mysteriously appeared, I assume.”
He started walking in the direction they were headed before, away from the wall where Lucy had appeared, his boots only sounding like a soft pat pat against the mossy carpet.
