Hehe, magic
Barnes
For the first time since she had entered the maze, Barnes shivered. She touched the plaster wall, which looked out of place in the foliage, and traced the faint remainder of poster paper stuck to it.
“I know this wall,” she murmured to herself.
After a few minutes of aimless pacing, coming up to the wall and then back, she rolled up her sleeves. She vaulted herself high enough to grasp a broken metal pole at the top, and pulled.
“Agh!”
A flash of twisted lights and the roar of a crowd crept into Barnes’ senses, as if the wall had been blocking them out. The shocking light disturbed her, and the music-laced noise swelled and folded over itself as if somebody had overlayed multiple tracks.
Barnes fell back, and the volume decreased. Everything immediately returned to silence, and the unnatural mist of the labyrinth dripped gently from the vines.
She shoved her hand into her mask to rub away the burning in her eyes, and looked more closely at the wall itself.
The posters did not look half as rain-washed as they did before. Colors began to emerge – green and red, with a dull grainy quality that could only belong in a world with mass factory printers. The damp ground caught drops of falling ink.
This would not work. Barnes turned on her heels and walked down the path to find another way.

May 21, 2025 at 2:25 pm #203271@loopylin Since I apparently didn’t post the whole long RP I typed up, I’m gonna redo it now.
Not sure what happened, tbh.

“So, where are you from?” Felicity asked as the two of us navigated the maze.
The fog was getting lighter. I debated testing out my camouflage here, but didn’t want to startle my new traveling companion.
“I’m from the Systemic Republic.” I explained. “Specifically the planet Lygon in the outer edges of the system. I was born and raised on Shawmut, one of its moons, just outside its spaceport city.”
I looked over to her. “What about you? You don’t look like any sapient race I know, except for humans. But I’ve never met a human with skin and hair like yours. What’s your planet like?”

“…Planet?” Felicity’s mind spun as she tried to process everything she just heard. She had hoped finding out where Huntress was from would help figure out where they currently were. Instead she was just more confused.
She felt her frustration bubbling up again, and she pushed it back down, forcing herself to take a deep breath through her nose. She tried her best to focus on the present conversation.
“I’m… human. Skadian, if that means anything to you. My planet is cold. At least it is in the north where I’m from.”
As she talked, she noticed that the light had started to fade. The sun was starting to set somewhere behind the clouds, and they were still lost.
She kicked a small rock in her path and sent it skittering on ahead of her.

May 21, 2025 at 9:06 pm #203278Melissa Thompson
Mel’s great aunt Tina had several strange and interesting things in her backyard. She was what Melissa’s mom called a “hoarder”. She had always said it like it was a bad thing, but Mel liked that word. It made her think of dragons and piles of hidden treasures.
She stood before one of those treasures now. It was a tall wooden cabinet with a scratched up door and a loose brass handle that shone in the sunlight. It leaned slightly to the side, as if tiredly slouching under its own weight.
Mel had to move a couple clay pots and an old leather boot in order to get the door open. Once she did, the door swung open easily on loose hinges, and the musty smell of old wood wafted out. Mel smiled her little gap toothed smile, and crawled inside. Once she was in, the door swung shut behind her.
Then, all around her, reality glitched.
In the darkness, she found herself pushing open another door and crawling through. She blinked as her eyes adjusted to the dim lighting.
Beyond the door was a stone path leading straight in front of her, walled in on both sides by tall hedges. A cold and humid air, very unlike the dry summer heat she had just been in, brushed against her arms and gave her goosebumps. The leaves around her rustled, and something in the distance made a sound like a ringing bell.
Mel’s eyes widened, and she let out a little squeak of excitement. Then she turned and ran through the door back into her aunt’s backyard. She dashed across the yard, and into the house, nearly barreling straight into Aunt Tina as she passed.
“Melissa Anne!” her mother scolded. “Watch where you’re going! Why are you running in the house?”
“I found another hidden place!” Mel shouted back, not slowing down a bit. “I need a coat!”
Mel grabbed a flashlight and her coat from the closet, and then rushed back outside.
“Careful to not step on any rusty nails out there!” her mother called after her.
Now, Melissa was prepared. She opened the cabinet door again, and stared inside, thinking. Then she closed the door and left to go grab one of Aunt Tina’s rusty pairs of garden shears.
Now she was prepared.
During the second trip through the cabinet, the shift was more noticeable. Mel could see the beam of her flashlight momentarily refract into a chaotic, fuzzy rainbow, before returning back to normal. When she climbed out the other door onto the stone path, strands of her hair were standing on end like they did when she spent too long jumping on the trampoline. She got to her feet and looked around.
Time to explore. Mel grinned and began walking confidently down the path.

May 21, 2025 at 9:12 pm #203279(Explanation: Mel didn’t end up at the maze entrance like everyone else because she got there using her own world’s magic, and wasn’t kidnapped by the maze’s magic. I don’t think the crystal orbs will work on her. Also, the door she came through is still there, and any character can use it, but it will just take them to an old lady’s backyard somewhere on earth in the early 2000’s.)

May 22, 2025 at 2:02 pm #203296Y’all should tell me what you want to do, and we can go from there. Maybe Barnes picks up Mel while looking for another way back.

If anything, Felicity was even more confused when I answered the question, not less.
“I’m… human. Skadian, if that means anything to you. My planet is cold. At least it is in the north where I’m from.”
Skadian. I wasn’t sure what planet would have that as its demonym, but I didn’t exactly remember the names of every one of the 300-plus habitable planets and moons of the galaxy or the various space stations that were being built in some of the more populated sectors.
On top of that, there was a decent possibility of her being from another galaxy entirely.
She kicked a rock down the path, looking up at what I assumed was the sun. It was a dim orange star, obscured by the fog, and it was setting ahead of us. Which meant we most likely were heading west, as only a few planets rotated so that their sun set in the east.
“You think we should….find shelter or something?” I asked. “I wouldn’t be surprised if the nastiest creatures around here came out at night or–”
I was cut off by a nearby snarl, and a following screech. We both drew our weapons and pointed in the direction of the noise….but a few seconds later I realized I recognized the owners of the voices.
“Those sound like some of my teammates. They could help us get out of here.” I said, searching for a path through the maze that’d lead us in that direction. “Come on! They’re this way!”
(I’ll introduce them after you take a turn)

May 22, 2025 at 6:26 pm #203320sorry that I haven’t gotten back… heh…. 😅
But personally, I’m fine with the group growing, but I think I’m going to take one of my charries out of it. The only problem is who will he go with…? And who will it be? Cassius or Leander?
Moral of the story, "always listen to a carrot cake when it screams at you."
