What about antagonists who do the wrong thing, but for a good reason? Or who have a realistic backstory that makes you feel sorry for them, or at the least, understand why they do what they do? Do you just not like characters like that in general?

I guess I should rephrase what I meant because looking back, I actually do enjoy sympathetic villains. However, I can’t stand when those same villains are portrayed as being justified for their actions, because they’re not. Also, while writing that I had a few villains in mind that were already established as evil but then someone wrote them as good (i.e Maleficent, Cruella, the Wicked Witch of the West, Satan). I probably should have clarified that, my bad. I myself have written a villain who can be seen as pitiable, but I find if a villain is portrayed as justified for his or her actions and the hero is somehow “in the wrong” as highly overdone (especially in modern secular writing). Last though on this, but this is something remake writers really like to do.

But I don’t like villains or antagonists that have no good reason for what they do, either.

I agree with this. Although, if it’s something simpler written like a fairytale or a story that’s still well written (like It’s A Wonderful Life) but its villains aren’t that in depth, I still enjoy them.

Older love triangles actually have depth, but modern love triangles are just like Shadow mentioned: bland plain-but-actually-not heroine, childhood best friend, and new hot guy. Ugh.

Evangelistic dating is dating/becoming romantically attached to a lost person with the hope that the relationship will lead them to God. Obviously, not a good udea to go into a relationship like that. It’s not healthy, and usually ends in a broken heart or spirit in real life. Unfortunately, it’s pretty common in Christian romance fiction.

Yeah, that’s wrong. I’ve enjoyed books where the love interest is the one to lead the other character to God, but actively fostering a romantic relationship towards a nonbeliever is messed up. The Bible specifically says not to do that!

There’s wordy like beautifully elaborate writing…and then there’s “Oh, the plot is going well, it’s time for AN ENTIRE  SECTION ABOUT WATERLOO THAT IS COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT TO THE PLOT WHATSOEVER.” *glares at Victor Hugo*

Yeah, I like 1st person past, but first person present takes me about three chapters to get into without being annoyed.

            Yep and yep. Agree 100%

            And…

Not the Waterloo tirade. XD I never found my interest in his books again after getting lost somewhere between the ditch with the cavalry and the dead guy who wasn’t actually dead.

That’s where I am right now. XD I was loving it before that part, so I’m going to continue it. XD

Lol. Do that then. It was about the fifth time I got lost reading that book, and the library wanted it back before I managed to find my ground again. I apretiate his detailed planning though. Lots of skill.

My family likes the Focus on the Family radio theater edition.

Mine is…three months or so overdue, and I’ve been billed for it…I’m going to have a librarian bounty hunter after me.
