Ah yes. Some writers talk about their super organized notes, and I’m just like “I have a head. And some notes here…or maybe over there…”

Fork the GorkJanuary 18, 2025 at 8:40 pm #195194I shall have to try the textbook method.
If you want to find all the cops, they're hanging out in the donut shop.
January 18, 2025 at 8:43 pm #195196Oh yeah, and the basics of a civilization?
Donuts and swords.
No, seriously. Virtually every culture, even the most basic ones, makes some kind of killing implement—sword, or spear, or similar—out of metal or animal teeth or obsidian or whatever they have. And they also learn how to make bread, often fried bread (hence the donuts)
Many cultures also learn early on how to ferment plant matter and make a wine equivalent.

Which is worse? Angry cat Batman or Batman?
#AnduthForever (hopefully 💕)January 18, 2025 at 9:03 pm #195202My pages are covered in random notes about everything, from worldbuilding to plot, and then I don’t look back at them, and forget what’s going on.

January 18, 2025 at 10:09 pm #195237The textbook format has been appreciated by several writers. According to a survey performed by a certain Stepheroni and Cheese, two out of two young writing enthusiasts used this world-building tool regularly.
Mm, I credit you with accurate scientific knowledge. Take my friendship.

January 18, 2025 at 10:12 pm #195239One of the first things I pin down are what I consider the building blocks of a culture; Cold or warm; Individualist or collectivist; Rich or poor; Military or civilian; Old or young. Then I find the cultural ideals for beauty, character, morality, nobility, justice.
This stuff is all so fuuuuuun, and all so eeendleeeeeeesssss. And just one of those things, like the individualist or collectivist question, can be taken down a million rabbit holes.

January 18, 2025 at 10:19 pm #195241Ahhhhhhhhhhh yesss…… It never ends …..
I actually really need to flesh out some of my cultures on these lines, but then there’s the cultures inside bigger cultures, and the random pockets of society, and this is just one tribe?!

It’s porridge, but the “everything but the kitchen sink kind” and is delicous.

The best decision I ever made for Project Lovedream was to limit the world-building to one city due to an extreme history of isolationism, plus the science fiction boundaries implemented because of it. It makes my job a whole lot easier.
Have you drawn maps for your project yet? I haven’t.

January 18, 2025 at 10:28 pm #195245A perfectly understandable complication. After all, now you have to make every aspect of your world just as complicated as that porridge recipe. It’s only natural.

Maps? I tried. I really did.

Yeah, I probably need to find some natural boundaries I can stick in. I’m not trying to be Tolkien. I just don’t know where to make it stop.

Fork the GorkJanuary 18, 2025 at 10:39 pm #195248I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have reawakened the trauma. *Pats your head apologetically* We’ve all been through it before.
Boundaries will help. Writing is like a relationship. You can’t let it take over your life, Koshka. I believe in you.
🤣😝

January 18, 2025 at 10:40 pm #195249EXACTLY. XD I even started a language simply so I could have it on signs in the illustrations. Like, no one speaks it in the story, but it’s there??? It did help me figure out the social hierarchy though, since I had all these neat names and no roles to put them to.
HOWEVER. I am rather proud of the Dorwain’s pagan religion, as dark as it is. It saved the world from becoming a huge political allegory, and gave the Dorwains an actual reason to hate the Eirtanians. It does cause one small problem though.
The gods don’t have names. And if they get names they’ll have to be in Dorwainish, which is different from Eishlagair, but has not been necessary up to this point. *slowly panics*

January 18, 2025 at 10:47 pm #195250*Sniffles* It’s okay. I think.
I may need boundaries.
