Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about what makes someone a hero. There are some obvious things, but you can be a hero and not defeat the evil villain, right? What about always being loyal to your friends and family? Always choosing to do the right thing when doing the wrong thing is easier?

So what makes someone a hero?

I need ideas for my novel, so any suggestions and ideas are welcome!

@epicaddie2 ooh, good topic. I can think of several different definitions right off the top of my head.

A hero is someone who does the right thing even when no one notices.

A hero is someone who does the right thing even when others condemn him for it.

A hero is someone who is wise enough to see the world clearly and foolish enough to love it anyway.

A hero is someone who knows that he only answers to One, and that all others are irrelevant.

@epicaddie2 😀 That’s a good question. I’ve had to write two essays on that this year

I would say, a hero is someone who fights for something else, even if they get hurt in the process. Or someone who gives themselves up for the sake of others. Someone who holds them self to a higher standard, even if it harms them to do so.

They don’t have to slay the villain to be a hero. Even if they die trying to save someone, or refuse to surrender and save themselves while fighting (in any sense) for something that is right, they could be considered a hero

This quote by N.D. Wilson describes it:

“Sometimes standing against evil is more important than defeating it. The greatest heroes stand because it is right to do so, not because they believe they will walk away with their lives. Such selfless courage is a victory in itself.”
            ― N.D. Wilson, Dandelion Fire

Also, Daeus has 22 turtles in his signature.

              @epicaddie2

#1 Hero’s aren’t perfect. I’m always tempted to make my hero this perfect goodie two-shoes. But, she has to have problems too.

#2 Hero’s should undergo some change for the better throughout the novel.

#3 Hero’s are usually fighters. I don’t know why, but usually they are.

Anyway, that’s what I’ve got for you. 😀

@epicaddie2 I don’t really have any idea at this moment. I may come back later though. My brain is currently fried for some inexplicable reason…

@epicaddie2 A hero is someone who embraces truth and what’s right, no matter the cost.
but the dictionary tells me that:
1.a person noted for courageous acts or nobility of character:
2.a person who, in the opinion of others, has special achievements, abilities, or personal qualities and is regarded as a role model or ideal:

@epicaddie2 But on a more realistic note, I believe that the real hero, is Jesus.  So if I wanted to see what that looked like, we do always have a higher example of such. Of course in a book you would want to consider your protagonist the hero. After all, that’s what protagonists are for.. Just a thought.

@itisastarrynight Hm, yeah. I’ll add that to my list!

I definitely agree that Jesus is the real hero 😉
