Have you ever written a self insert character? Or which of your characters do you relate to the most?

If Whaley can declare herself the new Q of the W asker, then I don’t think there’s anything stopping me from being the substitute question asker. I’m bored and I have questions. Hello.

I have always avoided self inserts like the plague, (except for in that one library roleplay we did from forever ago) but sometimes you can’t help putting yourself into your characters. The closest I’ve gotten to a self insert I think was my character Ellie. This was entirely accidental, but she’s very much like a younger me in almost all ways except for her really good memory. She is definitely also her own person though.

I also really relate to Lois with how passive and non-expressive he is. I relate to my other characters too, but it’s harder to explain how.

        Great question!

I think we all put little bits of ourselves in our characters. It’s how we make sure they’re human. I relate to pretty much all my brainchildren, although some more than others and it can be in obscure ways.

In my old WIP Kingdom of Shadows wich I unfortunately never finished, the first mc was supposed to be like me. But then as I developed her mother, that changed a little. Winifrith was a lot like me in my early-mid adolescent years. I basically sorted out every fear I had and gave them to her, lol. So Winifrith was me when she was younger, and Audrye was me when she grew up. XD

Otherwise, I think Aenwest from Portals is the closest to a self insert. We have similar senses of humor except she’s more extraverted and witty.

Which, exagerating parts of her personality is definitely of on purpose because she’s a stand in for any young KeePer. (Hence why we never give her real name) The reader might not actually relate to her personally, but hopefully as her story goes on, the reader can see themselves in her shoes. Despite her basically being me, lol.

Haha, I could certainly use a substitution asker when I’m forgetful. Sorry I haven’t suggested it.

I relate to different characters a little and a lot. I relate to Marcel because of stuff from his backstory. Lucille is my sweet summer child right now and I love her because everything I write for her is my knee-jerk first thought or reaction. She just notices the same things I do and has the same quirks. (Anyone else get picky about the texture of their outfit and change it ten times a day?) There’s also a character named Cosmo that y’all don’t really know. He is an anxious bean and I love him for it.

But a full-on self-insert? I can only think of the D&D character I invented literally yesterday. She’s my first D&D character so I knew she was going to be a self-insert. No surprises there. ? Technically this isn’t a writing character but whatever.

The character turned out to be chill, low-reaction, and a bit mysterious –  but randomly giving in to chaotic impulses that don’t fall in line with her mature attitude. All my friends describe me exactly the same way. It feels weird to type that down. I never really internalized those descriptions until I acted them out through a character, and now I want to know why I seem that way to others. So I guess there might be a place for self-insert characters.

I am out of signature ideas

Hmmm. Yes, but it was some time ago in a long forgotten story.

She was a cat who was typically a reserved, sometimes intimidating personality, but could randomly fly off the handle and be a complete goofball…although usually only when with her family. My younger self also made her this fantastic archer who would eventually save the day through quiet sarcasm and eye rolls…so she was more of my twelve year old ideal of older self than anything close to reality.

I do tend to relate to things about my characters, and I have characters that I feel very close to, but there have been no intentional self inserts since that “silver grey” tabby cat.

I’ve never intentionally written a self insert. Several of my characters began as someone I pretended to be in games with my siblings, but they were always someone else and had different personalities. Queen Natalie Mallard is excitable, energetic, hotheaded, and impulsive, whereas Amethyst Evenstar is more reserved, sensible and adaptable, as well as mysterious and cool. I’d be whoever I felt like playing at the time.

Currently, the character most like me is Ayla. She’s basically a more extroverted me with no commitments outside of writing, no common sense, and 10x the love of drama. Ayla and I would be best friends.

I think the character closest to a self insert that I’ve written is a random charrie named Garnet Rose Willow. When I was younger, I wanted to be president. (I changed my mind after reading that the president gets on average 30 death threats a day. XD) I had this vision of me as president. President Me was a tall, glamorous, and dramatic person with great hair, who spent most of her time escaping assassination attempts. I think I had a sword too. (In my defense, I didn’t know any of the important issues of the day. XD) I eventually decided not to be president, but I still liked the image, so eventually I made her a character. She shares some of my interests, such as politics, history, and books, and yes, has a sword. She always wanted one as a child, and then she got rich and decided to buy one. She can use it too, but prefers to carry a gun (or two) because they are more practical. She has an obsession with weapons, (So she can escape dramatic assassination attempts… XD), and languages, and has a traumatic backstory. She’s not in a WIP right now and is just living rent free in my head. She’s different enough from me that I wouldn’t consider her a self insert, but given her origins, she’s probably the closest I’ve gotten.

I would 100% vote for President Ducktator. Or president Willow.
