@ugroza Fun topic! Ahh I have way too many characters…and I do like all of them to some degree…

I feel like the more complex my character is, the more I like them, but I also feel like half the time it’s only pity. There are ones which are fun to write, of course. Hmm…

I’ll have to think about this for a little while! Who is your favorite character?

Lately, it's been on my brain
Would you mind letting me know

One of my favorites is from a fantasy WIP I have on hold. his name is Andrew, and only his family and me call him Andy. He is an ambitious perfectionist trying to find what to do with his life. since he’s the second grandson of the king, he hasn’t much of a shot at the throne, especially because of his poor health. He also grew up most of his life away from home in a monastery, and on the verge of becoming a priest, he has a vision and collapses in front of the entire monastery and his elder brother (the only relative able to come see him). I like his complexity, and that he is a character who has a change of heart, I’m pretty sure. Also, the way his POV is written is so much fun. But as my ideas for the story stand, he’s more of a secondary character to his twin sister, a tomboy princess who is fidgety and betrothed to a prince from another kingdom, and happens to be called to take on a strange role that is cryptic in wording so no one one knows what to do about it. I don’t know exactly what her strange destiny is, but she is also a delightful POV.

We crazy people are the normal ones.

@ugroza I love this question! Why? Because I have no idea which one is my favorite!!!

I wrote a long, detailed list that pretty much encompasses them all…somehow, my opinions have changed just slightly within the last few months.

Roughly guesstimating here…but I come up with one idea for a book just about everyday. Times that by 365, then times that by the last 3 years, so that’s around 1,095 ideas. And since I write romances, that’s about 2 main characters per idea. Of course, not all of them end up that fleshed out, but this is just to give you an idea of how many characters I have to work with. My debut novel alone has 45 characters (and, yes, I kept track of that…even the ones that didn’t have names).

So maybe I should just stick to the fleshier ones, aye?

Well, there’s Rina. And she’s #1 because she’s been with me for so long (only three years, really, but it feels like forever). I can think in her voice sometimes (and, yes, I know that’s creepy) and I feel like I know her as a real person rather than just a character. She’s so alive to me. She’s also the easiest character for me to write, since her voice comes so natural to me. (Even though we’re nothing alike…at all.) She does take the longest for me to write–phrasing each sentence just right takes forever. She’s everything that I don’t want to be and all the stereotypes of strong heroines that I hate–and yet she is perfect and all that I want in a main character, particularly one that’s staying with me for 4+ novels.

Then there’s Crimson and Elliot–and I count them as one because I wrote them both at the same time and they both came so easily and smoothly for me. It took me forever to find Crimson’s voice (she’s an odd girl), but once I did, I realized that she sounds so much like me, so it was so easy to find her balance, and I still love her because she’s a very different, very conflicted heroine who shares some of the same issues I do. And Elliot is the best guy character I’ve ever written. His voice is so realistic and guy-ish, which is hard for me to obtain. I count these as favorites because although they may not be my favorite “characters,” they are my favorite voices and I LOVED writing them.

Then there’s Rhys. Rhys is my version of Rhett Butler, and that about says it all. He’s a suave, debonair playboy and gambler from high society NYC–and yet, at the same time, he’s an orphaned bastard from the slums who likes to poke fun at society. (He’s also a blockade runner and part of the KGC and a serious womanizer…with impeccable Southern gentleman manners. He’s so contradictory.)

Then there’s Kit and Chloe. (Note: Kit is a male human being. Not a girl and definitely not a cat.) I love Kit for the same reasons I love Rhys–he contradicts himself. He’s an idiot. And yet, he’s so lovable. He’s a stuffed bear with a soft heart and hard head. And Chloe is the most hilarious heroine of mine yet. Spoiled brat meets witty minx–what’s not to love?

And then there’s Lady Samantha. I haven’t written a word of her yet, because I know I’m not ready for her, but I’ve been outlining her stories for a while now, and I love her to bits and pieces. She’s like the brunette, noblewoman version of Lucy from I Love Lucy, just in genius form. She’s the comedic relief for a girl who writes about piracy. Her voice, her views, her outlooks–the way she walks the fine line between traditional and progressive, feminist and chauvinist, lowborn and blue-blood, all while having a biblical worldview–makes her so interesting and multi-faceted.

And then there’s…yeah. There are a lot, but these are the ones who stick out to me the most. (Note: Keaton and Daisy, the characters I’m currently writing, don’t make the list. I just can’t stand them. They are too contradictory. I just…ugh.) *What’s funny is now I’m so in love with Keaton, but Daisy is still driving me bananas!*

Oh, and I can’t forget Catriona. Cat is something else, let me tell you. *Oh yeah, Cat’s spectactular!*

And, yeah, I’ll just stop myself right there. I’m sorry I just word-vomited everywhere. Here, let me wipe my face.

I’m sure this will change before long. I mean, I come up with two new characters every single day, right? So *shrugs* these are my faves today.

@ugroza Wait. I just thought of two more: Sebastian Haddon and Eloisa Marple. They. are. hilarious. Particularly together.

Ah, I believe my favorite character is the MC of my current WIP.
But following closely in second place is one of the two MCs in my short story EverHappens, Adrian. Adrian hides behind an intensely competitive and sarcastic mask but would put himself aside for someone who truly needed him (which is exactly what he does at the end of the story).

My favorite character is probably Seia, who I’m writing about now.  She’s always been told she is nothing, but she is the type of person who can’t be beaten.  She’s resilient but gentle (and slightly competitive 😉) and all she wants is to be loved.

@ugroza Oh man I’ve got a lot lol! I like Jocelyn, because she’s just so much fun and a real bright spot, but I also have other characters I adore! Like Grimm, who is so sweet but also stuck in the past, and November who is quirky and adorable! And….UGH PAXTON. A little boy whose been used and bullied for his entire life.

                      so many.

                      oh and Corvina. My villain.

                            Thank you!
I don’t know what to do with my short story just yet. It is set at ‘EverHappens,’ a small town stable. Fox is the other MC, who is recovering from a trick riding accident on a colicking horse, that she has always blamed herself for.
EverHappens is a romance/horse story, that revolves around the Fox and Adrain’s rivalry and their commitment to their goals in horsemanship (which happen to be almost identical).
If you would like, I could submit a few paragraphs for critiquing, I always value and appreciate constructive criticism. Um, how do I submit some for critique exactly? Do I copy and past it here?

My favorite character is Aaron Falcon. He is one of my most complex persons I have created and I also feel bad for all the torture I have given him. Though he has a lot of baggage from his past and problems, he is a probably my strongest character. Usually very serious, he has a hard time letting down his guard. Aaron started as a baby who was given away and now he is the sole ruler of the world. In a lot of ways, he reminds me of myself which is possibly why I like him so much.

I totally fail if I attempt to put romance or comedy in my books. Kudos to you! I admire the ability to show emotion in your stories.

I have noticed you use a lot of emojis in your comments. Are you an extrovert? I’m just curious. XD I think it is fun you use all those emojis. (I have already seen you use some I wasn’t aware existed so I learned something new).

It sounds like what you have done to Paxton I did to my favorite character. Isn’t it interesting how some characters just get themselves injured all the time?

(Btw, I think in my WIP’s MC’s thoughts all the time too. Sometimes, I literally write my characters’ whole letters. I think it’s just one of those things that come from being a writer:)

@ugroza Ooh one of my favourite things is talking about characters. There’s no way I can limit it to one, mostly because each character is influenced so much by the others. So the top two at the moment (though I love them all) is the protagonist of my WIP and his twin brother, Camrien. Camrien’s always been the funnier of the two in the sense that he’s the type to speak his mind, and he does say whatever comes to mind, but I wanted to add more depth to him so he’s not just a stereotype that tells jokes. He simultaneously excels at mathematics and astronomy, yet is a foreigner and has to speak in a language he’s not comfortable in yet, and so has to work harder at expressing himself. Ultimately, he’s someone who has to find self worth outside of the abilities he’s honed and relied on over the years.
