Ok I just googled perytons to make sure I wasn’t accidentally lying to you guys, and I found even more cool stuff.
- They are from Atlantis, but flew away when the city sank.
- Some stories say they are the spirits of travelers who died far away from home. Because of this, they have human- shaped shadows.

April 17, 2023 at 8:27 am #140268Oh, yes, I don’t even know how I forgot the perytons! I haven’t written about them but their sooooo beautiful.
Yeah, Orthus is cool. I never added him but maybe I should go back and rewrite it… 🤔
Btw I’ve seen bits and pieces of Song of the Sea, and I’ve watched and read Wolfwalkers. The animations are so great!
I second @awsumfaith . I’d totally love to see your creatures if you’re willing to share! 🙂

April 17, 2023 at 11:38 am #140280Fantasy Creatures are so fun!
I love dragons, because of what they are and what they can be, and what they can represent is so expansive.
I also love a bunch of creatures from Brandon Sanderson’s writings, like the koloss and kandra in Mistborn (I won’t talk about what they are because that’s actually kinda spoilery for the series, and I know your getting into Cosmere right now). I also love the Chasmfiends of Roshar. They fill the role of dragons in this world, and they do such a good job at it, and it is such a different image of basically a draconic crab that just feels right.
Also @godlyfantasy12 , I also find Cthulhu to be a really cool concept, but not because of what it looks like, because that was actually never the image the author intended, in fact, there was never an intended image, but the opposite. What makes Cthulhu fascinating is that it is a being beyond all logic and comprehension, and it’s entry into reality breaks and ends reality instantly. It’s more of a deeper discussion of the ineffable, and what we think we know, and how the truth may be far deeper and more terrifying than we could possibly imagen and how infinitely small we are in comparison. It’s the more existential horror type of concept.
Some Fantasy creatures I’ve made that I’m really happy with include Siems, Darraks, the Loasi’ems, the White Lies, the Phantoms, ect.
Siems is more of a general reference to a group of creatures which live in Omialia that bare kangarooish features. One in particular is essentially a kangaroo sheep. What I just find fun about this isn’t that I took two creatures and mashed them together, but I made something that made sense for the setting. Omialia as some of you know is a space of planetoids with their own gravity, called omias. So this world will favor a build that can jump high enough to move from gravity sphere to gravity sphere, and position itself to safely land, hence a kangaroo type appearance becomes prevalent. This is also the same reason humming bird type wings become the most favored in flying animals that opt for wings.
The Darrak are also Omialian, living in the innermost regions next to and rarely in the Alunakan. They have a massive gorilla type build, with a long tail, and a grey almost rock looking body. They rely on a form of eco location, because of how dark the region is, and their eyes are at this point no longer present from complete lack of use. The reason they have gone for a large gorilla appearance is because of how they use the mass of their arms, as well as their size to move from gravity sphere to gravity sphere. Their arms grow with a mass that is greater than the rest of their whole body. Using this, they hoist themselves up onto their hind legs, and use their tail for extra balance and strength. Raising their arms upwards, and by their sheer size, they usually are able to pass the gravity sphere barrier to the point that their arms are fully in the other sphere, and because they weigh significantly more than the rest of the body, the darrak essentially falls upwards smashing into the other omia (planetoid) fists first. They are hostile if provoked.
The Loasi’em are the dragons of Omialia. They appear to be lacking in many ways, having no wings, and even having no mouth. However they still soar through Omiaila and are of a tremendous size. They are long and serpentlike, and only have front arms with no legs. They could be seen as living omias. They are able to fly by being independent from the other gravitational sources, by being a gravitational source (that might sound like it would make things worse, but in the mechanics in this universe works very differently). Because of this, much flora and fauna grow and live on these majestic beasts, and even occasional people. The creatures live on them, but they live off of the creatures by absorbing nutrition from their remains and whatever else through their skin/scales, creating a symbiotic relationship. They are peaceful, but can easily crush you if they were truly pushed to violence, but they have become a symbol of beauty amongst the Lasi’el.
The White lies and the phantoms are a sort of kin to each other, though how close their connection I have not fully worked out. The Phantoms are the 4d fractaline beings that come down and pluck people from 3d space. They are are considered creatures of darkness, and their intelligence level despite being 4 dimensional is at least thought to be small. The White lies (name still pending) are group of highly intelligent beings that encapsulate evil. They are of a higher dimensional nature as well, but can appear to people and each often takes the form of some particular creature, like a snake, and they have a white body, but they sometimes look diseased and/or decrepit, and their maw is a pure empty black. They all are creatures of deception, trying to look benevolent in their appearances, and serve a darker purpose.

"Oh yeah, but none for this"April 17, 2023 at 12:51 pm #140301Your creatures are really cool! I especially love the idea of the Loasi’em! For some reason it made me think of the Last Airbender, but I honestly have no idea why lol. 😅🤣
I’ve made up some creatures, mainly in healer, but they’re mainly just the races in general. Lupinari (wolves), Felisaro (cats), Arcanin (bears), Falcor (birds), and Serpenree (lizards/snakes). In The Dragonsbane Society there are a few strange species, kind of twists on normal animals, like the races in healer, but not intelligent necessarily. The flaretail scorpion is named both for the fiery venom that it injects, and the spicy flavor, as it is a favorite food of a lot of people.
The rockback turtles are the size of elephants, have strong, rock-hard fins with claws at the end for walking on land, long, tree-trunk tails, and rocky backs with moss growing over them. Silverbeak ravens often make their nests on the turtles using the moss, and in turn keep pesky insects away from the rockbacks. Rockbacks rarely dive under water unless they need to, and the ravens often hunker down in the moss, which holds air in pockets.
There are also giant wolves in the Dragonsbane Society, but they don’t really have another name. Other creatures, basically twisted humans, are more shadow than soul, though they can be change back… somehow. Haven’t decided how yet XD

April 17, 2023 at 6:13 pm #140346@whalekeeper Time for a rant, lol. For “traditional” fantasy creatures, I like dragons, griffins, phoenixes, pegasuses, basically anything that flies.
And someone mentioned Bruni the salamander? Oh my stars and shadows, he is SO CUTE!!! I have a stuffed animal of him……
I also love human-and-animal-combined creatures, but not really weird ones, and it’s usually mostly human with animal features. I think furries are kinda cute sometimes though.
There’s an example of my creatures–usually human in most respects, but with the ability to walk of all fours if they want to, and with wings/tails/horns/fur/specialized ears/whatever else. My dragons–which I’ve worked the most on–have a range of different types which have different abilities. I can share some if you want!
Where'd I get ya this time? The liver? The kidney? I'm runnin' outta places to put holes in ya.
April 18, 2023 at 11:09 am #140397Wow, you’re creatures are really cool! I like the Phantom and White Lie
Thanks! Yeah, I’m trying to get into the themes of good and evil with them.
Odd, for some reason I have your message on email, but it’s not appearing on the actual forum, is that just me?
Personally, I’m not much of a horror guy, but I do find the idea of Cthulhu interesting, along with Lovecraft’s other writings. It’s not a media I would indulge in, but I do like to draw some of those concepts into my writing. I’ll have to look into that card-game though, because I do have some friends that might also be interested.
Your creatures are really cool! I especially love the idea of the Loasi’em! For some reason it made me think of the Last Airbender, but I honestly have no idea why lol. 😅🤣
That could be some indirect inspiration, I love the dragons in Last Airbender, as well as everything about the show in general. The feeling of Avatar is something I do actually really want to achieve, while I still want it to be very much its own thing.
That reminds me of the giant tortoises in an old worldbuilding project of mine (funnily enough, depressingly similar to Avatar, though it still had a different charm I liked). There isn’t too much to say about them, other than they are giant tortoises, but they are often used by Thabokian (was not as well versed in creating names as I am now) merchants as beast of burden. There were also the crystal turtles of the same world, living in a lake high in quartz compisision, growing on there backs and everywhere else.
Other creatures, basically twisted humans, are more shadow than soul, though they can be change back… somehow. Haven’t decided how yet XD
That sounds interesting, I like the distinction between shadow and soul, are you going to get into that for a theme?

April 18, 2023 at 12:41 pm #140408It must be Cthulhu!!
no I’m joking when I edited in a picture of Cthulhu into my post the post disappeared but the original post was still in my messages. Most likely has to do with databank holding and the filter software.
Yeah I am not much of a horror person either but I like lovecraftian horror for some reason ( I think because it’s more of a psychological thriller than an actual horror thing)
As for Arkham Horror the card game you effectively by the base box and then you need a campaign expansion.
In the game you play as up to 4 investors (although best is 2) trying to stop the world from some sort of interdemensional doom. It is co-operative (kind of like the board game pandemic if you’ve played that). The game is played over multiple generally 1-8 30 minute per a player interconnected games. This is called a campaign. These campaigns are very repeatable. Depending on which campaign you play it can drastically change what you are doing. (Ie in the Duneitch Legacy then you investigate missing professors who were related to a strange incident wich leads you to the old town of Dunwitch where you realize that there is something the townspeople aren’t telling you. VS in On the edge of the earth, your on an attic expedition when your plane crash lands and your characters have to try to survive in the harsh cold wile trying to unravel the strange ruins you found in the artic) the different campaigns are generally based on different Lovecraft works (although the path to carcosa, my favorite campaign, is based on Robert W. Chambers the King in Yellow) for example the dunwitch legacy is supposed to be sequel to the dunwitch horror (however there is no need to have any knowledge of the dunwitch horror to understand the campaign) or on the edge of the earth is supposed to a sequel to on the mountains of madness (same thing about no prior knowledge needed) some of the campaigns though like forgotten age just smash together a bunch of Lovecraft works into completely new things (that feels a hilarious lot more like India Jones than anything else).
If you have any more questions feel free to ask
April 18, 2023 at 12:42 pm #140409That has a lot of typos from auto correct and speed typing, sorry
April 18, 2023 at 1:09 pm #140420I haven’t exactly decided how I’m using that yet. I know that the dragons in the Dragonsbane Society end up twisting the humans that way, and that the appearance will be shadow. They’ll pretty much be mindless beasts, bent on destruction and whatever else the dragons have them do. So yeah, I suppose it could get into a theme… I’ve considered calling them the Umbra, because a huge part of them is darkness. I get into these creatures more, but that involves some huge spoilers XD
