@rochellaine. No, I never have.  And I think I must have just said something really ignorant.  🙂

@ariel-ashira That’s okay.  It’s reasonable that you haven’t seen it.  Star Trek is just really popular and well-known so I thought it would make sense if I used an element from it in the story.  Star Trek actually wasn’t the first show to invent “beaming,” since I’ve seen it in a sci-fi movie from the 50s which actually influenced Star Trek.  But it was popularized by Star Trek and has been used in a few different forms in other films/TV shows.

Anyway, what “beaming” is, is they break your body into atoms or molecules or something and transport you to a different location, then put you back together again.  If I knew how to add GIFs I would show you what it looks like, but I don’t.  Sorry. 🙁  It’s a useful transportation device for travelling from one ship to another in space, or going down to a planet without having to land your ship.  So basically what I’m implying in the story is that the “stone” they’ve been fighting over is really some advanced technology that belongs to the people in the spacecraft who just beamed down and back up again with the MCs.  Now they’re all on the spacecraft because apparently for some reason the people with the advanced technology wanted to meet with the MCs – or think they do. *tries not to plan out the whole story*

So, does that make a little more sense? 😀

Akira and I look at each other in confusion.  What is a machine?  The men watch us for a moment, glancing at the sack in my hand, then the other one speaks into a small black box, “Gintley, beam all five of us up there.  These are the people we’ve been looking for.”

A light flashes around the five of us, and I feel tingly all over my body.  The next thing I know, I am in an empty white room, thoroughly confused.

“Akira! Fren!  What’s going on? Where are you?”

A piece of the wall disappears and the stranger that spoke into the black box walks through the rectangular hole.  My growing panic eases slightly.

I wake to the sound of rustling grass and the smell of blood. Only, I can’t see anything, not even when I open my eyes.

“Did we win?” I mumble breathlessly.

Akila wipes stray hairs away from her face. “Yeah, why?”

I grunt, struggling to sit up. “If we won, why am I bleeding?”

“When you got stabbed the enemy, everyone was so surprised they managed to hit such an amazing fighter they stopped and stared allowing us to take them by surprise and win.”

                  “Really?”

                  “No.”

“Akila, what is this thing on my eyes?”

                  “It’s a blindfold, of course.”

“Why is there a blindfold on my head if I’m bleeding?”

Akira tucks a strand of hair behind her ear. “So you wouldn’t see your own blood and faint. But it looks like you managed to push it away. I’m begging you, right now, do not look at yourself.”

                  I glance down.

I see red.  Literally.  Who did this to me? my mind starts whirling but then my head begins to buzz and I no longer need the blindfold to cover my eyes, for I can’t even see with them open.  The last thing I remember is Akira’s startled shout.

                  * * *

Pain. It’s all that is real in this world of misery. Sometimes I feel gentle hands bathing my wounds, but then the pain comes again and I let myself fall back into darkness.

Between periods of unconsciousness, I hear mumbling voices above me, including my brother’s voice. I feel warmth from the bathing water and from the fire, which I hear crackling to my left.

I must be back at Fren’s hideout. I think dimly. How did I get here? I open my eyes to see my brother’s snarling face.

“You made it, course you did. You always have to steal the glory.”

I wince at him. “Did it ever occur to you that I was almost killed?”

“Of course.” He scowled at his muddy boots. “I thought you were dead, until those people dragged you in here.” He looked me in the eye. It was that stare, that if stares could kill, I would have died two minutes ago.

With a flutter of blonde hair Akira jumps between us. “Fren! Settle this some other time, for goodness’ sake!” I push myself up onto my feet, trying to ignore the pain in my head. “Where do you think you’re going?” Akira asks, pushing me back onto the bed. Tears begin to form in my eyes.  I pull myself up again with trembling hands and forse my eyes to focus.  “The Ravine.”

Akira’s blond head shakes back and forth.  “Are you out of your mind?”

                  “Please!”

“No.  You can’t.  Just look at yourself!  I know you want to get it, but its to way to dangerous.  For anyone, let alone someone it the condition your in.  You cant even think straight!”

I close my eyes.  I might be scared of myself, but I am not out of my mind.  I knew very well the consequences of leaving it there.

“If Fren wont go, I will.”

I put a hand to my spinning head and take a deep breath. It aches to breathe and my legs are stiff, but my mind is made up. I can’t leave the Stone there. I’d lost it before and my parents had given their lives to find it. Even though it’s hidden well, deep in the Ravine, the enemy could be searching for it. Even now.

Akira looks at me hard and seems to make a decision. “I’m coming with you.”

I take a breath. “Help me up.” Akira steadies me, then grabs a knapsack sitting in the corner by the door while Fren skeptically eyes her.

I make my way towards the door as Akira opens it, but a hand on my shoulder stops me. I turn my head.

“The King be with you,” Fren whispers with a grim expression. He puts his hand on my shoulder for a brief moment, and then turns back inside.

Akira and I limp out the door. Its already dusk, and the forest looks dark and foreboding. It takes half an hour of limping before we reach the ravine, exhausted and heaving with the effort. We gaze down into the shadowy depths of the Great Ravine.

                  Its to late.

Already we can see the flicker of torches far below. The enemy is searching for the stone. My heart sinks like the sun that is getting lower and lower in the sky. But my parents risked everything for the stone. So would I.

I turn to Akira. “Where is the safest place down?”

“You are not going down there. You are hurt, and your parents would never forgive me if I let go down in this condition.”

“Well, it’s a good thing that we’re the only ones who will know what’s going on.” I say with a smirk, quickly replaced with a grimace. Akira looked at me, but must have realized I was going to go down one way or another, with or without her.

“Fine, but you follow my instructions, you hear?”

I groan, but agree, if only to get a moment’s peace.  I don’t need to tell her that if I think of a better way I might just do my own thing regardless.  I’ve been part of the Stone Rebellion for three years longer than she has, so of course I’ll have better plans.

We backtrack to a stream, then follow to a different path down into the ravine. It wasn’t as direct a route, but this way at least we wouldn’t be seen

It isn’t a direct route, but at least this way we won’t be seen. Several times I think I hear footsteps crackling on the leaves behind us.

“Are we being followed?” I ask Akira.

She shrugs, but several times I see her glance behind us. We make our way as quietly as we can to a place where The Ravine narrows, and there are ledges and footholds that we can climb down on. I can nearly see the stone’s hiding place from where we stand.

“Edric, be just a little quieter.”  Akira’s eyes dart nervously around.  She fingers the knife in her belt.  I raise my eyebrows at her.

“It’s probably nothing.” She’s not a very good liar.  “Just be careful.”

We begin lowering ourselves into the Ravine, one toehold at a time.  The only light we have is from the pale moon and the dim flicker of enemy torches that steadily come closer as we pick our way down.  We finally reach the Ravine floor and land with a muffled clank of sheathes and armor.  I grab Akira’s wrist and pull her behind me in the direction of the stone.  Our breath sounds loud in the air, broken only by a wolf howl far above or the faint sound of the enemy searching for the stone.

“Here,” I whisper, “its behind this pile of stones in a sack.”

Akira nods and we start loosening the rocks sealing the stone’s hiding place.  As the enemy creeps steadily closer, we finally break through the barrier.  I grab the sack and peek inside to affirm it is still safe.  The stone, no larger than my palm, glows a soft grey.  I close the sack and we begin making our way back up the ravine wall.

We both freeze as we hear above us the same crackling footsteps that haunted us on our way here above us in the blackness.  I lose my foothold on a rock and I slide to another just as it goes tumbling down the Ravine wall and lands with a thud at the bottom.

We both hang there on the side of the Ravine, stiff with terror.  The enemy heard the rock fall and we can hear their shouts and see their torches approaching.  Akila grabs my hand and hoists me to the next ledge.  “Hurry!” she hisses.

The enemy reaches the bottom of the wall and with triumphant yells begin climbing after us.  My side is sending shooting pains through me again.

Then above us we hear a whispering voice.  “Grab my hand!  Ill pull you up.”  Fren!

He pulls us up and we begin running.

“Fren! What are you doing here?” I pant.

                  He grimaces.  “I-”

Suddenly, a flash of light appears and two men stand beside us.  We jump back and prepare to fight, and they look at us warily.  “Give us the machine,” one of them says.

Akira and I look at each other in confusion.  What is a machine?  The men watch us for a moment, glancing at the sack in my hand, then the other one speaks into a small black box, “Gintley, beam all five of us up there.  These are the people we’ve been looking for.”

“My name is Brek.  This bag carries machine that, although it looks like a glowing rock, it is incredibly dangerous.”  Brek pauses.  “As for your friends, they are individually separated into rooms such as yours…”  Boom!  Something thunders and shakes the room.

                            Silence.

Brek slowly reaches his hand to the side of his leg, pulling a slightly rectangular object from the pouch.  It fits neatly in his hand.  He quietly opens a compartment in the wall near my head.  He pulls out a white blanket, neatly folded, and quickly flicking his hand so it expands and covers my entire body.  I hear him open another compartment.  There is some shuffling, then more silence.

The door splintered and six soldiers in all black invaded the room.

“Aha” one of them says. “You’re coming with us now”.

Before he could come any closer Brek spins around and grabs a slender titanium dagger from the shelf above me.
