      Alright. I think I’ve finally settled on an idea here. I’m thinking I’ll have the guy shrunken and focusing in just on him as a bust shot, leaving out his hand. I’ll put him down in the bottom 3/10ths of the page in the right-hand corner. On the left-hand side of the bottom 3/10ths of the page, I’ll have this letter from the story being consumed by fire. I’ll fade the transition between the two. On top of this would be a simple, but hopefully “literary style” border. The top 7/10ths would be white with a very subtle, mild patterning to it. I would put the name and title up there, make them bolder and maybe make the title just a tad more elegant.

        @Daeus sorry I’m late again… @Hope wasn’t kidding when she said I had mice in the wifi box. Seriously. Twelve of them. They were promptly ejected, but they did mess things up quite a bit… 😛
        And that definitely sounds like it could work; your idea. I especially like the idea about the letter. One word of caution— I can tell you from personal experience that fire is very, very easy to overdo. (Stop snickering @Hope). So just be careful of that. And… well… I really liked the idea about the noose too. So if for some reason your idea doesn’t work all the way, maybe you could work that in.

          @kate-flournoy Thanks. You probably saved me from a premature death by worry. I might be able to work the nose in too, but we’ll see.

              @kate-flournoy Uh… well I was doing productive thinking, but all I could think of every moment was how to fix the cover and I was starting to feel a bit sick from it. That’s what happens when I can’t think of anything but one thing.

                @Daeus oh dear. That’s awful. Try a little perspective next time. I hear it works wonders.

                      @daeus, aww, so sad I missed the critiquing party. And may I just say A+ Rhett and Link on that Perspective video. 🙂 🙂 🙂

                        @daeus sorry I’m a little late…
                        I like the cover the way you had it originally, although I didn’t like the text crossing the guy’s face. Maybe you could even go with a little less light on his face, since I’m assuming that’s Edwin and he’s very mysterious.

                          I’m so pleased to see that there are Rhett and Link fans here. And Lost was okay but it went way downhill after season three.

                          Back to analysis! @daeus My opinion is that simple is good. Very good. But if you go too far, it can look like a cardboard cutout. Not that it’s bad, but it doesn’t work well for everything. Also, I think the romance novel feel might be coming from an empty background with a prominent image in the front. Contrasting that with historical fiction/fantasy book covers, you most often see a character presented with a background with some sort of scenery or distant environment.

                          However, I’m not sure that works with your intentions or if it works with your story, so feel free to take this all with a grain of salt. I do like the darker tones and aspects, though. I think that adds a sense of mystery rather than white or even a lighter brown. When it comes to the cane (because I recognize it to be as such) you could edit it to have a hook handle instead if you really desire it to stay *shrugs*

                            A couple of questions that have nothing to do with critiquing your cover. 1) Are you getting ready to self-publish? 2) How did you put together a cover? (I’ve done covers for fun before, but I’ve used Picasa, which can’t superimpose images, and I’ve had to go with photos I’ve taken, which is rough, as I don’t have a large selection of fantasy images to choose from.) What program did you use to design this cover?

                              @his-instrument I am planning to self-publish soon. I’m hoping in about two weeks, but we’ll see if I can manage everything in that time.

                              I’m not actually doing my own cover design. I hired PerryElizabethDesigns, which is a company that advertised on KP before. I’d recommend them. They’re pretty affordable and I like what they’ve done.

                                @daeus Let me know how self-publishing works out for you. I haven’t given much consideration to that method because I’ve heard it’s expensive, but I’ve never known anyone who used that method. How are you going to market your book? That’s another thing I’ve heard is tough with self-publishing, because you’re responsible for everything.

                                  @his-instrument It’s not really expensive. You basically just pay for a cover unless you can really design a good one yourself and then you can do a couple easy things yourself without paying for them and it doesn’t cost anything to list your books online. Print books don’t have to cost anything either with print on demand. Marketing is a broad subject. You can definitely market your own book. I could talk about that for a long time, but I really should get back to my editing now. I’ll return though sometime soon and try to give you an overview.
