I already have the book because my friends and I read through it about a year ago! I probably won’t fully re-read it, but I can jump in on the discussions.

It’s been nearly a month since we began to read The Screwtape Letters! Just a reminder to start thinking about what to say when we discuss it tomorrow and in the coming days. I can’t believe how fast time passes. Can anybody else relate when I say that time seemed to go slower when I was a little kid?
Anyway, discussions begin tomorrow, but I’m not sure I’ll be able to post until this weekend due to reasons beyond my control. I’ll most probably contribute something then, but until I can I’ll just say that I loved the book 🙂

May 16, 2024 at 1:09 pm #179685Idk, it still tagged me, so apparently it doesn’t need to be green to work?

So first of all…what happened was that each person in my class was supposed to choose a book to read which they had never read before, and then they were supposed to convince the class to read it using some form of persuasive language and stuff. I thought to myself, hey, I’m reading The Screwtape Letters anyways, so why not read that book for my school assignment? So I did.
That was a mistake.
In turning the reading from a Want To to a Have To, I made it like a chore. Not saying that chores are never enjoyable, but you get what I mean. So I suppose I didn’t enjoy it as much as I could have.
Put that factor aside, and I LOVED The Screwtape Letters. (Or hated it? I can’t get it straight lol) I listened to the audio version, and the narrator – Joss Ackland, I think? – was amazing, capturing Screwtape’s voice perfectly. I loved how the author showed us the extent of God’s love, demonstrating it so clearly even through a demon’s eyes and affirming God’s character: undeniably good. And the end bit *spoilers ahead* was such a relief to me. Although the entire book was about ensuring the damnation of the young Englishman, I found myself rooting for him the whole time. The poor guy was blown to bits, but C. S. Lewis managed to show me how his death and bodily sufferings didn’t matter: what mattered was that he passed so easily into heaven, and found himself at home.
I also learned some important lessons from the book. Although C. S. Lewis might not have portrayed the devil completely accurately, I still think I learned a lot about how Satan goes about tempting people. The theology and philosophy in the book was well thought out and well worded. I think it’s difficult to find a book which deals with such topics as The Screwtape Letters, and yet is easy to understand. The voice was professional, but I had no problems reading it. I don’t know whether those who read it found it to be that way, but I did.
Anyhow, here is a quote:
“Do not be deceived, Wormwood. Our cause is never more in danger than when a human, no longer desiring, but still intending, to do our Enemy’s will, looks round upon a universe from which every trace of Him seems to have vanished, and asks why he has been forsaken, and still obeys.” -C. S. Lewis, The Screwtape Letters
I’ll finish by pointing out how wonderfully The Screwtape Letters aged. It was written in 1942. 1942. I mean, that was what, eighty two years ago? And yet I only thought about the time period during which it was written when “The Great War” was mentioned, which means that they were still calling WW2 by that name, or when some technology no longer in use was described. Otherwise, it is remarkable how untouched by time it has remained.

@stephie @theducktator @everyoneTo be quite honest, I really don’t have to much to say about Screwtape Letters rn, and my brain is quite fried from to much time on my computer and the internet. I found the whole book was very good and relatable in different ways—and I enjoyed reading it. Overall, I really agree with all of what you said, Stephie.
Oh! But one of my favorite quotes is: “Gratitude looks to the past and love to the present; fear, avarice, lust, and ambition look ahead.”
Alright, sorry that was short. I’m off.
…
(Oh, last thing ….heh heh, I thought it was so funny when Screwtape turned into the centipede XD XD)
