I think a lot of people don’t agree with magic, so we’re going to keep those books out of the suggestions and hopefully avoid them so that everyone can read each book.
We should probably define “magic”. Most Christians are ok with Lord of the Rings or Chronicles of Narnia magic, however, the controversy seems to be mostly with books like Harry Potter or Revenge of Magic where characters learn spells. Sorry if this is too nitpicky, obviously everyone should be comfortable with whatever is chosen.
(Ugh, I’m defining things. The five common topics are getting to me.)I was thinking any genre people wanted, as long as it’s appropriate. Ultimately, we’ll just vote on the options, so if people don’t like a certain genre they’re not going to vote on it and we won’t read it anyways. I don’t really read a certain genre exclusively — I mostly enjoy a well written book that pulls me in with good characters and a good plot.
Agreed. 🙂

They should be. JUSTICE FOR THE COCONUT! 😂

By the way, I love your forum signature.

Agreed. Totally agreed. Does anyone have any ideas? My brain is just as dry as store bought peanut butter cookies. (Homemade ones aren’t dry enough to describe my brain right now.)

I think your observation here is pretty accurate. I’d also add that the source of the books matters, too- whereas the Chronicles of Narnia were written by a Christian author and approach things from a Biblical perspective, Harry Potter is not written by a Christian author, and even though some of the themes in the books might be good, it’s not based off of personal Christian beliefs and a Biblical worldview. So to me, the source of the book matters just as much as the themes/topics of the book in this case.
I’m pretty sure I’ve said already that I haven’t read Harry Potter. I don’t want to start an argument or debate on here, because it would be pointless to get all of us riled up over it. I’ve heard the argument over whether there is actual witchcraft and real spells used in the books, and for a number of years I didn’t really care one way or the other, because I didn’t really have a desire to read the books anyway. Now that I’m old enough that my parents aren’t dictating what I read anymore, I could read them if I wanted to. However, a close friend of mine was talking to me about them, and the mother of one of her good childhood friends started drifting away from her faith in God and dabbling in witchcraft instead, and she confirmed that the spells and incantations in Harry Potter are indeed real. (I had also previously worked with the son of this woman- he was still a firm Christian, and I would have asked him about it myself except we were no longer working at the same place at the time that my friend told me about all of this)
Take it or leave it- I know what I just said is incredibly controversial, but for myself, I heard it from a source that I trust, and that’s why I won’t read the books, and why I’m also careful about any books that approach magic from a perspective that is not rooted in the Bible and in the author’s personal faith in Christ.
Anyway… I’ve probably already stirred up enough controversy so I’m gonna go back to my quiet hole for now lol.

March 24, 2024 at 12:57 pm #178261I do think that if Harry Potter would cause you or someone you know to stumble, you shouldn’t read it. I mean, doesn’t the bible say that if your eye causes you to sin, to cut it out? I read Harry Potter and I found it harmless in my situation, but to others it could be detrimental. Anyhow, just like you said, I don’t want to spark a debate or anything — that would indeed be pointless.

March 24, 2024 at 1:23 pm #178262I don’t think the spells were created to be real incantations. They’re just Latin. The problem isn’t the spells themselves, but that people are using them for satanic purposes, which makes them real. If that makes sense. My parents are fine with Harry Potter, but there is an official spell book that they forbade. But if you think it would detrimental to your faith, don’t read it. I’m not trying to start a debate either. Most of the other Christians I know do read it, so it’s interesting to hear why some don’t. 🙂
Nice simile. 🙂 My attempt at a definition of a book with magic: A book not from a Christian worldview that portrays spell use and/or the occult as good or not harmful.
Does that work?

March 24, 2024 at 1:29 pm #178264I’m confused. I can’t find a simile or even a metaphor in my post lol
Yeah, I think that works.

I hate soft apples! I can only eat the crunchy ones. Oh well, I suppose somebody has to eat all the poor rejected apples I have turned my back on. When my apples get soft I usually try to get my dad to make applesauce. He doesn’t like me to brag for him, but his applesauce is amazing, by the way. But we’re getting off topic lol

March 25, 2024 at 9:30 pm #178340I will now crawl out from under the large pile of coursework to inform you guys that according to interviews with multiple sources JK Rowling (the Harry Potter author) is a Christian. You can find a couple of Christianity parallels throughout the books the most obvious being in the end of Deathly Hallows.
I’m a bit busy to do a book club at the moment but if you need suggestions I can help, I’ve been reading a lot of classic lit this year for AP Lang.
March 25, 2024 at 9:50 pm #178341I know she says she is a Christian, but apparently she made Dumbledore gay in one of the Fantastic Beasts films. (I haven’t watched them, I’ve just heard this.) So I don’t think she really is. But I do see the parallels.
CRUNCHY APPLES FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!! And yeah, we are somewhat off topic.😆Is it time for suggestions?

March 26, 2024 at 8:23 am #178347Yeah, I watched Fantastic Beasts with the expectation of an amazing film — and my expectations were dashed. Dumbledore is indeed gay in the film, but it’s unclear whether or not he regrets his gay relationship with Grindlewald (or what nearly became a gay relationship).
Anyways, I do think it’s time for suggestions. But I can’t type for any longer because I need to catch the bus.
Edit: Dumbledore being gay is not the only reason I didn’t enjoy the film. The plot was too complicated and didn’t come together enough at the end.

So here is the link to suggest things:
It may or may not work, let me know if it doesn’t. We’ll do something similar to vote on what we want to read. 🙂
