OKAY. SO. I am working on a story. Yes… a story… What was I typing? OH YES. My main character (and narrator, as it would seem) is indeed lovely. She just happens to be nameless. Her appearance is inconsequential, since it is never described (weird, I know. I have my reasons) but her personality is shown IN DEPTH since the story is developing her thoughts and ideas, etc, through her observations on other people. She is incredibly quirky, a bit all over the place, ridiculously observant (in a bit of a supernatural way), and can randomly quote any line from a song and turn it into some super philosophical jargon. If you’ve read it, her narration style is somewhat similar to The Book Thief (Only she’s a human being. I’m definitely sure about that.) I’m not sure if she NEEDS a name yet, but I’d like to keep one in my back pocket. (Along with my sunshine, gum, and abominable rectangle 😁)

October 14, 2026 at 8:37 pm #214307That’s kinda cool you don’t describe her appearance. Charlotte Brontë deliberately did not provide a conventional or detailed physical description of her character in Jane Eyre.
Also love the music/song power.
So you’re just looking for a name for her?
I typically use baby name sites, Behind The Name, or AI for finding a good name.

My sister in fact came to me the other day and asked me this exact question: how do you come up with a good name? I don’t think there’s a right or wrong answer, but here are some things I’ve tried in the past:
- Going to a name generator and combining different parts of names I like the sound of.
- Coming up with my own language and then using the words in that language to make a name. (Yeah, that one is a bit overboard.)
- Modifying or just “fantasy-izing) an existing name. Example. In my current book there’s a character called Clairymon (a variation of Clair) and one called Paulomaroes (a variation of Paul.)
- Honestly, just trying out different names that come to me.
Hope this helps and you find a good name!
There once was a snail who was depressed and would do anything for his girlfriend. Didn't end well.
October 14, 2026 at 11:40 pm #214335This is such a fascinating character concept!
For names, I usually decide what letters “fit” the person, then look at names from the cultures I feel are aesthetically/culturally similar to my setting. I also like to look at name meanings. Sometimes I find a perfect name and sometimes I find inspiration for a made up name.
Whatever method you use, I hope you find the perfect name!
Still a ChaosGremlin™ on the inside.
October 15, 2026 at 8:59 am #214347Thank youuuuu. I’ll definitely look into most of these. (PROBABLY won’t invent my own language though. 😅) I’m likely never going to say the character’s name in the story, but knowing it would help me connect with her more and get into her brain.

October 15, 2026 at 2:41 pm #214390I am sure that whatever you do will be the right decision! Whenever I chose names for my characters, I like to focus on the meaning. I pick something I like about the character (like a value or personality trait) then go from there. I don’t know if this is a good way to do it or not, but it’s how I’ve done it 😆

Woah. A Bilbo secret 😲 This is a good start.
This is cool! I don’t really have any input, as I also use some of the methods others have listed 😆 But good luck on your name search 🫡
