So, I know you all are out there – poets, poetry-lovers, and the like…

For all of us, I thought it would be fun just to have a thread where we can share random bits of poetry, funny poems, somber poems, lyrical poems, nonsense poems, one sentence gold-mines – anything, really, just for the sake of getting it out there and hearing feedback, whether it’s full on critique or just a passing “aww, I love that!” Poeting is not easy work, and it’s nice to be able to share some of the fruits of our labors, if you know what I mean ^.^ If this is a totally weird idea to you, please don’t feel obligated (even if you consider yourself an aspiring poet) to post : )

So.  I realize that I should probably start us off.  And I also realize the last poem I wrote was in June 2020?

It’s not a very strict poem, I wrote it in a moment of brokenness and utter weariness (hence the title), but hopefully it’ll be a bit of an encouragement to some one out there : ) And please, if you have any feedback or critique, don’t be afraid to share it.

        When I Am Weary

        Life sings a blurry tune,
        distinct voices blend with laughter and tears;
pain and pleasure, disappointed hopes, elated dreams…
in the end, it makes me want to cry as Solomon did:
        “Meaningless! … all is vanity!”
What do we live for but our fleeting pleasures
        that fade, leaving only memories
tainted by some bitterness or regret?
Friend, put your hope not in the successes of this blighted world –
        you will always be disappointed.
        What then?
As a child of the King, let this be my song:
My only boast is Christ crucified.

Oh my goodness, I loved your poem. The references to Scripture were so beautifully placed.

I love writing poetry, so I’ll share one of my shortest works here. I wrote it about a personal, very difficult experience I had nearly a year ago now. I hope some of y’all can relate to what I’m talking about, if someone you trust has ever wounded you.

            Shark Attack

To the man who destroyed my world

Who ruined that perfect picture, who made me realize

That a shark attack can happen to me

It isn’t just something you see on the news

And suppose, foolishly, that it’s one in a million

That one in your own ocean wouldn’t have the desire

            To murder and to mutilate.

You mutilated not only my safe place, but

The safe place of the ones I hold dear

All the ones with us who hurt and contemplated self-harm

Who trusted you with their fragile hearts and broken minds.

And some of them are still in the dark

You wrecked the tiniest speck of light.

            I remember laughing with you

Because laughter is the most beautiful thing to share

And when we were sad and with you

We never thought we’d be alone again.

Then we discovered what you did

            I couldn’t believe it

I thought someone had framed and hacked

I stuffed myself with food to convince myself it wasn’t true

But in the dawn I found it was worse than I thought

            Much, much worse

You had ravished my safe haven.

            And I wept.

            Oh, I wept.

And I wanted you to go to the lake

            Of fire to retire.

Now I don’t know where you are

            Are you still behind bars?

But I’ve slipped you into a prayer box

Because I trust there was still good in you

Though you destroyed my world, I love you still

And I know there is still repentance as He wills.

@libby Ah, that is beautiful! Also, great topic!

@joy-caroline Girl…you’re gonna make me cry! That’s so sad and beautiful and…ugh.

I’m just learning how to write poetry, so I think I’ll share just a couple snippets with y’all…

I’ve forgotten what the sun looks like

              All I know is night

              Everything is quiet

It seems even the shadows are bright

If you asked, I could not tell

              The darkness from the light

              * * *

My place is a place of silence

              My home is empty rooms

That echo with the passing minutes

              Time is at a standstill

              Not a single thing moves

              Even wind I cannot feel

I ask for but a sound

              A semblance of life

              Something to stir the ground

To remind me I have ears

Ears that have no need to hear

              Because my place is silence

              My home is empty

Even the echo is but faint

These were written from a book that I’ll probably never write. I have a couple more I’m working on that I like better.

                @gracie-j

Thanks, I’m really glad you think so! I wrote it from quite a raw perspective.

Wow, I enjoyed yours! I LOVED the lines “It seems even the shadows are bright // If you asked, I could not tell // The darkness from the light.” Those lines were so profound I had to reread them, because they really struck me.

Aw, I’m so glad you liked it! 🙂 (I didn’t realize it was so profound! XD)

                    It was profound!

I’m actually performing a poem for my English class on Monday, so please pray that all goes well. 😂 I’m doing it on a really deep topic, so I hope the response is positive.

This poem is actually one on a whim, but anyway here it is:

                                In

                                In the blizzard,

                                In the night,

In the lone warrior’s desperate flight,

                                In snow,

                                In the ice,

In the payment of a price,

                                In the hating,

                                In the living,

                                In the painful forgiving,

                                In the forest,

                                In the dark,

                                In the new known spark,

                                In the hurting,

                                In the healing,

In the mixed up, hopeless feeling,

                                In the terribly sick,

                                In the forced meek,

In in the strong and in the weak,

                                In the hope,

                                In the chance,

And in the bright new dawn,

                                There is always hope,

                                Because it’s not the last.
