What’s one thing you know now that you wish you knew when you started writing?
For me it’s that you don’t have to write as if someone is constantly peering over your shoulder. I didn’t want my writing to be unreadable or melodramatic, so I’d constantly edit as I went. I never had a fully self-indulgent project, like fan fiction or something. Because of that, I still have problems drafting stuff because I want to get it right and readable the first time.
These days I’m a little more loose, but it’s hard to shake the editing-as-I-go. Old habits die hard! ?

I’d say the fact that I don’t have to get published young, or that I have to publish the first book I ever wrote.
And it’s really only been recently that I finally let myself slow down and enjoy writing for the sake of writing instead trying to rush and get published before I graduate high school. It’s really neat and amazing that people can do that, and it’s a great goal, but I don’t need to push myself. C. S. Lewis published his most successful books in his 40s! Lord willing, I have time and right now I should be focusing on becoming a better writer and honing my craft, not pushing myself and go go going to get published before I’m 18. That’s really helped me fall in love with writing a lot more lately.
And then yeah, I had always heard that you shouldn’t publish the first novel you write, but I was like, “pfft, sure, I’ll just work really hard on it and it will be great.” Ummm… girl stop being so cocky. ? I’ve finished multiple novels at this point (in different drafting stages, but the story is finished nonetheless), and most of them, if not all of them, I wouldn’t feel comfortable publishing. They’re just not my best work and still have a ways to go before I write something that I feel is actually polished enough to pitch to agents and that actually carries my unique writing voice.

I guess that I could embrace childlike wonder without losing depth to my story, that I needed mentorship but didn’t have to accept every idea, and that daydreaming is not the same as writing.
Wait. Not sure I actually know that last one yet. XD But really, that there are many ways to tell a story, and to relax enough to explore how any particular tale should be told rather than feel like it has to be done just like the others.
You have listened to fears, child. Come, let me breathe on you... Are you brave again? -Aslan
