      Hello to all the wonderful peoples here. I was overthinking where to put this amongst the thousands of topics on KP so… here we are.

      Does anyone else get in those moods where writing just feels bland? I know I get writer’s block frequently, but with that on the side, lately I feel like writing has just been extremely difficult to start. Even if it’s something I’m really eager to write, I immediately lose interest in writing it the second I sit down to begin. This has also made me wonder if the way I write is simply boring.

      I know this may be common among writers but I just don’t really know what to do about it. I have considered taking a break, or maybe even sharing some of my stuff for some helpful review (which I have considered this in the past and I just get really nervous to be honest). I also admit that I’m still working on the first draft of many of my WIPs and that’s another reason I’m hesitant to share stuff because most of it sounds pretty ridiculous, in my opinion.

      I figured it might help if I asked other writers. I also know that if I asked someone in person I’d get maybe three words out, and even then I don’t know many writers in person that I could ask. Sorry if this is random, I really hope it makes sense.

        I get that feeling a lot too, but I’m not really sure I have the best advice for overcoming it. I go through phases in my life where all my hobbies, particularly art and writing, feel very bland and aren’t fun anymore. I usually just wait it out and eventually I start liking it again. Sometimes I can force myself out of art block by drawing new things that Ive never tried before or using some new, unfamiliar art supplies. Maybe you can do this with writing too? You could try writing a silly poem or creating new characters and a new setting that is completely different than you are used to. Idk if that would help but maybe it’s worth a try. I’m not really sure exactly how to help because I’ve been stuck in a similar rut lately too.

          I wish I knew how to fix this, because I’m stuck someplace similar. My writing style just seems so dull and cringe, and my characters seem either flat or overly traumatized, and I use every excuse to not write, just because I don’t want to deal with the cringe that my story seems to be. I still love the story, I’m just hating my writing style recently. My only suggestion would be to sleep eight hours because on the rare nights I sleep things seem better.

            ย I go through phases in my life where all my hobbies, particularly art and writing, feel very bland and arenโ€™t fun anymore. I usually just wait it out and eventually I start liking it again.

            This is exactly what I do. I get really obsessed with my hobbies,ย  and it’s all I’ll be interested in for a week, but then I’ll completely turn it around so my hobbies become the bane of my existence for three months. As far as trying new things, I do want to try it. I like that idea! I’ve tried something a bit similar with art, but I hadn’t thought about trying the same with writing.

            @theducktator

            I’ve been having lots of issues with my writing style too. I tend to switch the way I write around a lot, depending on what I’m doing. So that’s another problem ๐Ÿ˜… I don’t even know where to start about the characters because I have that very same issue. Either, my characters are crazy, bouncing off the walls and being chaotic or, they’re very emotional due to traumatic events and other circumstances, or they’re just boring and lacking personality. I’m still trying to figure out how to get around that one. Sometimes it helps a tiny bit when I write in first person in the POV of a character I can’t figure out, but usually I just cannot get it right.

            I tried sleeping once. I do not recommend. Just kidding lol. That actually might help a ton if I got eight hours of sleep every night, because I definitely don’t XD.

              A list of suggestions, because lists seem to help me. :]

              1. SLEEP.

              2. Think hard to see if there are any emotional problems holding you back. Maybe you’re comparing your work to other people too much. Maybe you struggle to connect with your first draft because it doesn’t have the same punch you expected it to have.

              Then, if there is a problem, find some way to avoid it. If you’re comparing too much, take a break from reading other people’s work. If you don’t enjoy your first draft, make sections to shine and be fun to write as you go along.

              3. Give it time. Play around, dabble in whatever. If you want to break away from art from a while, be my guest.

              4. Here’s the thing… We’re all hobby writers, some less than others (on account of publishing). Don’t feel obligated to post amazing projects, although you certainly are welcome to do that. Just enjoy it and write what’s most fun for you.

              The exhaustion is strong with this one

                Thank you for the suggestions ๐Ÿ™‚ I have been taking a little break, but I do want to begin my art again and try to get over the writing muddle I’ve been in. XD
