The basic idea is this: Long ago, the Dark Lord arose. He was defeated, but the hero that defeated him became a new Dark Lord. This repeats again and again.
Might sound kind of basic, and I’m guessing that some variation of this twist has been done before, but I think there are some cool things I could do with this.
I got this idea from lotr. InΒ lotr, someone like Gandalf could have theoretically used the ring to defeat Sauron, but if he had, he would have become evil.
I’m not sure if I want to have something equivalent to the ring in this scenario, but there will have to be some explanation for why the hero always turns evil. It might be cool to have that be a mystery at first though.
I really like these sorts of cycles. The historical precedent sets up expectations, but then you can throw a variable into the mix to upset the balance. In this case, there are all sorts of things I could do.
If there is a specific “chosen one” who becomes the hero each time, what happens if someone kills him off? What happens if one time, there is no chosen one? What happens if the Dark Lord dies of natural causes somehow?
(I also really like doing twists on the “chosen one” plotline, but I already have a different story in the works with one of those, so I’m not going to focus too much on that aspect of this idea.)
So what do you think? Anything you think would be cool to see? And does anyone happen to know of any stories with a similar premise so I can avoid doing something similar?
I guess I should tag some peoples. Let’s see… @highscribeofaetheriuum @rae @savannah_grace2009 @rae @thearcaneaxiom

I think that’s a really cool idea. I also like stuff like that. I don’t know any stories off the top of my head like that.
Signature is limited to 100 characters? That seems awfully unjust. We refuse to be bound by these ru

Thanks! (Yeah, @rae somehow passed me! But no one else ever has!)

December 17, 2023 at 3:21 pm #170022I don’t know if you could use this in your story at all, but I had a dream one time about some of the characters in a book I was reading, and in my dream, the main enemy somehow was slowly dying of a deadly disease but didn’t tell anyone about it, to make the protagonists think he was still perfectly healthy when he was not. I think my dream ended before anything major happened, but in this scenario, the main enemy could die unbeknownst to the protagonists, and the enemy’s henchmen would be thrown into chaos trying to figure out how to keep their control without the protagonists realizing what’s going on.

December 17, 2023 at 3:24 pm #170025Interesting… If I had the Dark Lord die, I would probably want to have that happen at the very beginning of the story, with the idea of throwing everything into chaos. If he dies in the middle of the story, then that’s basically just a free win for the protagonists…unless something bad unexpectedly comes from it, like a new even worse Dark Lord! I’ll have to think about it, thanks for the idea!

December 17, 2023 at 3:26 pm #170028Idk, this is a very rough concept, so I have no idea where or when I’m going to put it. Most of the time when I make a new planet, it’s for a new magic system.

December 17, 2023 at 3:45 pm #170033A compliment if anything. I have complained about @highscribeofaetherium’s excessively long tag in the past.
