@warrioroftherealm This is really cliched to say, but just freewrite. Sit down at a laptop or use longhand, and begin writing your heart out. What are you trying to say? Who are you trying to say it to? How does the Bible tie into this? What’s God’s view on this? What are different perspectives on this topic?
For me, if I force myself to write…[Read more]

@emily-d I’m not proud to say it, but I haven’t seen either of those. I just wanted to know if they’re worth my time. And I guess, because of your answer, they are.

@holly-nelson-gray @emily-d What’d you think and why? I’m really curious
@dragon-snapper It’s simply a film made outside of maninstream media. So, basically, a movie made without a big budget. And, because of the low budget, they’re usually dramas. Not huge action flicks. Examples of indies: Little Miss Sunshine or Me, Earl, and the Dying Girl.…[Read more]

Sci-Fi Tips Part 3
First one up, the alien invasion sub-genre.
You’ve definitely heard of this one before. Aliens suddenly appear on earth. The people on earth go into panic mode. Questions arise. Why are aliens here? What do they want? What do we do? Defend or make peace? What normally happens is the aliens are attacking the earth and we must d…[Read more]

Sci-Fi Research Part 2
Huh, Sci-Fi Research sounds dry. What should I call it instead? Anyways . . .
So I found out the definition of sci-fi and I’m super excited. I can’t wait to get more and I immediately start researching sub-genres. You know—the genres within science fiction (I use genre and sub-genre interchangeably. Just warning ya).
Tha…[Read more]

And has anybody seen any good indies lately? ‘Cause discovering an amazing indie is like unearthing a treasure chest. Just sayin 😀

Honestly, I didn’t really brush my article up that much. Just added a couple sentences in the end talking about, as Kate said, the unavoidability (not even a word) of cliches. Just stressed how unimportant they are.

@brandon-miller Love how you summed up science fiction in that one sentence
A good sci fi story always explores what it means to be human in the present, by exploring alternative realities, past or present, and highlighting humanities strengths and weaknesses in those settings.

@dragon-snapper Great! I really liked it too. I thought it had perfect tone for the story it was trying to tell 😀

@sleepwalkingMK Great that I could help ya!
@dragon-snapper Yes! Self-made connections are always more revealing. That’s why I believe stories can sometimes teach more than lectures. Because they make people draw a conclusions for themselves.
Okay, I get what you mean about the arcs. It makes sense. And you’re right.…[Read more]

@dragon-snapper Yeah, I really think writing science fiction with these definitions in mind will improve your story at least in the areas of character and theme.
I really like that definition of sci-fi for obvious thematic reasons. Also, sci-fi can’t just be about technology and the extraordinary because that would disregard certain genres of…[Read more]

LOL! 😀 It’s hilarious how easily our brains can become mush. And I realize I came off a bit strong so, sorry if anybody got irritated or anything. Either way, you guys showed me how I need to clarify things in my writing. My main point definitely wasn’t that clear. I’ll probably update the article and tweak it a bit before I send out my monthly…[Read more]

Sci-Fi Research Part 1
So the first thing I did was research what science fiction actually is. I looked for a whole bunch of definitions. Many went something like “science fiction is a genre that deals with futuristic science and technology” or “it’s merely a setting.” Personally, I found the “dealing with technology” definition to be quite…[Read more]
