@amy-l-klob I’d recommend starting by introducing your protagonist, but I would be careful about having a slow lead-in to the actual story. You want to grab the audience’s attention in the first page. That doesn’t mean you need to immediately leap into the main plot of your novel, but you should be including some conflict and/or intrigue that…[Read more]

@dragon-snapper Sure, though you shouldn’t just stick two stories in one book. The two villains need to have the same goal or attack the same weakness in the protagonist or do anything else that keeps the story coherent.

Thanks for the input guys! 😀
@kate-flournoy @daeus I tagged Kate because I knew she wrote fantasy…I just didn’t stop to consider how long the fantasy was. 😉 My mistake. Haha.

Heya Kapeefers. This week seems to be the Snapper Invents Topics week.
Another question:
Can you have two villains? It kinda makes the plotline a little weird I know, but can you have, say, for the first half of a book there be one villain and the other half another villain? Or does that really just mess things up?

@sam-kowal Yeah, Dalinar’s character arc was amazing. Didn’t think Sanderson could top Kaladin’s in WoR, but he pretty much matched it. Yeah, Adolin seemed to get away with that, and I was also looking for some closure on the moral questions being raised regarding the morality of war. I suspect, though, that Sanderson at least plans on continuing…[Read more]

For a first time author, avoid going over 120k; 130k max if you absolutely have to. Once you become published, you can push the limit more (I just finished a 450k fantasy work that topped the NY bestselling list), but publishers aren’t willing to risk those sorts of word counts for unpublished authors.

Oh, wait, you already asked Kate this question. WHY!?

Daeus replied to the topic Does it Have to be Long? in the forum Plotting 8 years, 5 months ago
@dragon-snapper The max? Hahahahaha!
Oh, dear. The max, you say. Well, I don’t know if there is a max. 😉 Probably very few people if any have ever written a 1,000,000 word fantasy novel, but I will say that the trilogy I’m working on is looking like it will end up that long.
And whatever you do, don’t ask Kate this question!
Fantasy stories…[Read more]

So….I’ve heard a lot about fantasy novels being long, but Iv’e never written anything longer than 85,000 thousand words. Anything that was going to be longer than that I never finished. So I’ve been wondering…how long is the max for fantasy novels?

@sleepwalkingmk I think that’s a really good idea. Three EiLs are hard to fit into one book, so splitting it into two books seems like a wise move!

@dekreel Yes! It was perfect! 😀
Anyway, I wouldn’t say mine is procrastination with writing, but that I’m perfect. Yes. I have no weaknesses whatsoever. 😉 Okay, actually, it’s probably uh….ummm…Yeah, you know what, I don’t have any weaknesses.
Dekreel, do you have any suggestions? Something that would be helpful in the story? -
Snapper replied to the topic A Keeper Adventure in the forum General Writing Discussions 8 years, 5 months ago
@dekreel
Procrastination eh?

😉Anyway — the idea of having each writer with their own villain is cool but I also think that you’re right about the army. Not to mention it might take a lot of extensive work to think up each and every villain. Plus, I’d like to stick together. 😉 And that way, if you have the shapeshifter villain, it can…[Read more]

@xonos-darkgrate I’m going to stick with my opinions from the previous discussion that @daeus mentioned. I don’t think that you should have them.
1. Not only do they infiltrate other people, but it’ll also get stuck in your head. I find that the more I hear them, the more I think them. And even if they aren’t “that bad” they still make me…[Read more]

@xonos-darkgrate I basically side with @kate-flournoy, though I don’t think that swear words cannot ever ever be used.
We had a discussion on this before you might want to read. https://kingdompen.org/forums/topic/coarse-language/
Basically, my position is that you should try as hard as you can not to use any swear words and that the majority o…[Read more]
