Random social stranger at a random social function: “Oh, you write books? Cool! What’s your book about?”
Me, randomly trying to function socially: *stilted grin and shivering, nervous laugh* “Here, let me… let me…” *digs out notebook with a triumphant flourish* “I wrote it down!”

@Dragon-Snapper ugh I am so sorry. I have no idea why it does that to you. *offers you conciliatory chocolate*
Yeah… trying to pitch your book on the spur of the moment is torture. Especially if the person is just trying to make conversation and you can tell they really don’t care. And then you walk away from the encounter and think of a dozen…[Read more]

@jenwriter17Â my most memorable and embarrassing writerly moment will always be the time I had to explain to the chiropractor that my hip was out of place because I slipped on our hardwood floor choreographing a fight scene… he was very nice about it, but the startled, slightly skeptical sidelong look he gave me, and the funny little laugh,…[Read more]

@Bella-D it would appear I have been summoned. Thank you @daeus. 🙂
Let me see… there are a number of potential answers to this question. The one that ended up being the answer for me isn’t so much about changing the side of the character that is reserved, brooding, and unresponsive, but about developing a second side to balance it— the one…[Read more]

Personally, that has always been a favorite scene of mine, when an arrow is shot through a room with a message…especially if it is to the villain. For one, that shows the arrow was chosen to relay a message, instead of killing him/her in cold blood even though the opportunity was there.
I’m not sure if it’s exactly cliche, but it is used very…[Read more]

@Aella yikes… I do not envy you. 😛
Well… oh boy. If this was my task, I’d probably take a mathematical approach, since communication is all about presenting the material in the way your audience is already used to thinking.
First, I would explain the purpose of fiction— how it’s use is to touch people on the heart and make them think…[Read more]

Kate Flournoy replied to the topic The Elements of Elemental Cliche… in the forum Fantasy 6 years, 10 months ago
@warrioroftherealm ehehe… well they better not be, because I’m using them. 😛
No, honestly, I think they are. But then, so is a lot of other stuff. I’m confident using ‘elementals’ in my work because the system, while it does incorporate elements, isn’t just about elements. In fact the element part is probably one of the least important bits.…[Read more]

Like all image sites, it has some questionable content if you poke in the wrong corners, but overall it’s pretty good.

Longfellow has some really great stuff. Tennyson too, though I haven’t read as much of it. Mostly just The Lady of Shalott. ;P
